The Lesson
Initiation:
Part I -I will begin the lesson by showing two videos giving students ideas to begin their research.
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pX8OKeXL7F8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=ukFrcEWfRKY)
-We will have a quick discussion after the video about what ideas they liked and would like to
research further.
Part II
-Ask: Do you know of any problems in your local community? Today we need to do some
research to find out what our community needs and how we might get involved. You will be
working with your groups to do research on your groups community. This is a time for you to
get some ideas for how we might serve.
Lesson Development:
Directions: During your research time today I expect you to work in your groups to fill out
your research form I sent to your email. Be sure to make a copy and share it with your group
members. You will have about 40 minutes to read and research online. After submitting the form
to me you will spend some time individually writing a blog post about what ideas you have or
what you learned in your research. You must post your blog to Edmodo before you leave for the
day.
-During the lesson I will check-in with groups to see how they are progressing. I will ask several
guiding questions like: How can you be sure that the information you are reading is true?
How does this website relate to your project? What keywords are you using? Do you know
who wrote this? Is the author unbiased?

As students work on their blog post I will encourage them to focus on answering some of these
questions: What did I learn do today? How will I use what Ive learned? Why does what I
researched today matter for the project? What did I find interesting during my research?

Closure:
Class 3-2-1 discussion: Before students leave and as they are working on posting their blog post I
will ask students to share 3 things they learned or found interesting 2 questions they have moving
forward and 1 obstacle they faced during the research process.
