Nathan Ractliffe hands over the red helmet to incoming Captain Phil Clayden. Photo Heather Vile
By Jessica Howard
Nathan Ractliffe has stepped down from
the helm of the Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade
after a diligent six-year stint.
The Bacchus Marsh man passed on the
captaincy role earlier this month, with a
traditional and symbolic handover of the red
helmet to incoming captain Phil Clayden.
Ractliffe served as an officer of the Brigade
in various Lieutenant positions over 16 years.
Its quite an unusual feeling, stepping
down, he said.
I feel like the pressure is off a little bit.
Still an integral part of the Brigade, Ractliffe
will continue his duties as a fire fighter and

Show to blossum
By Jessica Howard
Money will finally be made available for the 2016 Bacchus Marsh
Horticulture Show.
The project, run by the Bacchus Marsh Aquatic Centre Community
Consortium Incorporated, had been listed as a grant recipient under
Moorabool Shire Councils New Tourism Event Grants program.
However, as it was the only application received, councillors voted to
find out if the grants were advertised properly.
A report tabled at the July council meeting found that the community
was aware of the grants, and that five enquiries were made with just
one application resulting.
Councillors voted to approve the $3014 grant for the show.
It was the third round of the program, after money made available
under the first two rounds was not fully expended.
A substantial pool of $21,686 remains unallocated in the 2016/17 that
can be offered to new event organisers in a fourth round during the
2016/17 financial year.
The New Tourism Event Grant Program supports event organisers
that are either in the process of developing and trialling an event
concept, or have recently trialled an event concept.
It is specifically for tourism events with the potential to draw and
increase significant numbers of visitors to the shire.

Both Government and Opposition need to get their collective acts together on this
problem; this is not a time
for politicking, its a time for
consensus.
Health expenditure has
grown by 74% in the last
decade, and Primary care
and medical service costs
including Medicare have
grown by 60%, representing
an $11 billion increase, and
neither Party has provided
an adequate solution to long

Its time both Parties

A successful filmmaker
born and raised in Bacchus
Marsh has taken out the top
accolade at a 72-hour film
festival.
Sam Burzacott, a 21-yearold media student at RMIT

head to head in a fast-paced
environment in order to produce an original short film.
Competitors received three
pieces of stimulus - a prop, a

Sam and his team put together a seven-minute film,
titled Isolation, which followed the story of a girl and
the federal election.

Blues final
quarter dive
Ballan v Dunnstown
With their season on the line
the Seniors opened strongly
and at the first break had a
four goal lead, and could do
no wrong. But the Towners
got going in the second quarter and at the main break the
lead had been whittled away
to just one goal. Jason McNamara put in a great game but
he did not have support to
take advantage of this good
work. Wilkie and Tanti also
had their share of the ball
but in the final quarter the
Blues only managed to boot
three goals whilst the Towners came home with a wet
sail and booted five goals to
take the win. The Blues are
still in the eight but only on
percentage with Daylesford
right behind them.
Final Score. : Ballan 9. 6. 60
lost Dunnstown. 11. 7. 73
Best - J. McNamara, J. Wilkie,

Devils and Cobras become one

Moorabools biggest rivals
have put aside their competitive edge to raise money
for families battling cancer.
Darley Junior FootballNetball Club, who hosted
the annual rivalry match
against Bacchus Marsh on
Sunday July 17, raised more
than $10,000 in support of
four families at the club.
Junior club president Matt
Colley said the donations
would help to cover costly
expenses whilst the families
were struggling.
There are four families
here at the club, each with
a parent that has been diagnosed with cancer. That is
just unbelievable, he said.
To have to go through
something like that would
be so hard, so we figured it
was in the best interest of the
club to help them out where
we can. These families are
going through tough times,
and with only one parent working, we thought it
would be a great idea to help
out.
Mr Colley said the club donated $5000 from canteen

The 2016 State Little Athletics Cross Country Championships were held at Cruden Farm,
Langwarrin on Saturday. The heavy rain leading up to the Championships made the course
very wet, and with over 12 races during the day, the course became extremely muddy and
heavy underfoot. The freezing temperatures and chilling winds put many runners to the
test in all races.
Congratulations to the following BMLAC athletes on their results
