Moorestown residents are out and about playing popular mobile game Pokmon Go

The Sun
When Pokmon first came to
fame in the 90s, few would have
expected it to still be a topic of
conversation more than 20 years
later. However, thats exactly what
happened when the old phenomenons newest spin-off, Pokmon
Go, which was released to the
public on July 6, captivated mobile gamers of all ages even
here in Moorestown.
The concept of the game is
simple. Players capture, battle
and train virtual creatures, called
Pokmon, that appear as if they
exist in reality on the screen of
their mobile device. Free to play,
the location-based augmented reality mobile game creates the illusion that a Pokmon is nearby a
player by utilizing the GPS and
camera features of compatible devices.
Demonstrating its immediate
success, just 24 hours after its release on the App Store, it topped
both the Top Grossing and
Free charts while later becoming the fastest game to top the
App Store and Google Play. Also,
according to CNBC, on July 12,
the game became the most active
mobile game in the United States

Nick Barnes, left, and Andrew Kershes show off their Pokmon while playing Pokmon Go at the
Moorestown Mall on Monday, July 18. The latest trend in mobile gaming has brought relevancy back to
Pokmon popular in the 90s and encourages players of all ages to walk around outside to catch the
virtual cartoon creatures.

From the street, house numbers may not always be clearly

identifiable or visible. While this
may cause difficulties for home
visitors, more importantly it can
cause confusion among firefighters, police and EMT staff in the
case of an emergency. For this
reason, volunteer firefighters
from Hose Company No. 1 have
taken it upon themselves to hold a
Curb Address Fundraiser.
Hose Company No. 1, one of
the three volunteer fire companies in Moorestown serving the
community for more than 125
years, is painting house numbers
on the curbs. Completed by the
companys 25 volunteers, the
painting costs $20 and all proceeds will go directly to the fire
company.
David Chezem, who has been a
volunteer firefighter for 26 years
and has spent half of those years
serving Moorestown, came up
with the idea when he saw other

Network celebrates and showcases student athlete accomplishments

By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
To help student athletes share
their most exciting moments with
the ones they love no matter the
distance,
Moorestown
High
School has joined the National
Federation of State High School
Associations Network for the
2016-2017 school year.
The NFHS Network is designed
to celebrate and showcase the
unique accomplishments of student athletes and student broadcasters, camera crew and editors
working the productions. A joint
venture among NFHS, its member state associations and PlayOn! Sports, the network provides
coverage of 27 sports and seeks to
capture the passion, pride and energy of the high school experi-

ence.
Were a very successful sports
program, and this is a service we
can provide to parents, family
and alumni who have an affinity
for the high school and who like
to follow these teams but cant
necessarily attend all contests,
Neil Rosa, MA, CAA, director of
athletics at MHS, said. It awards
the parents the opportunity to
watch their kids play by signing
on as a subscriber.
While the program is capable
of featuring state playoff and
championship events for the 34
state members of the NFHS Network, the service will also be utilized more specifically by MHS to
air other school-based activities
from prom, plays, concerts, Board
of Education meetings and more.
It is on the cutting edge of

whats happening to high school

sports with media coverage, so it
helps our students by giving them
more exposure, Rosa said. It
also helps supplement the budget
of the athletic department in that
its a subscriber program and a
percentage comes back to the athletic program.
Rosa also explained that with
media programming becoming a
new class offered at MHS for the
first time this year, the broadcasting program will additionally
provide students with real-life experience in the field. The athletic
director also predicts that this exposure will open up a variety of
potential career opportunities to
students while giving them something to add to their resumes.

Ready for school?

Haddonfield, NJ 08033

Of course youre not, but theres no better time to prepare than now
ts hard to believe, but just last
week, we saw the first back-toschool advertisement on TV. It took
us by surprise. Oh, no, we thought,
did we sleep through all of July?
Stores are trying to get ahead of the
game and boosting sales in a traditionally down month, and every year, the
push seems to start earlier.
It got us thinking: We have been presenting back-to-school coverage in The
Sun for quite awhile now, in many different towns, but how can we make
this coverage better?
Our quick answer by being better
prepared.
So, even though the beginning of the
next school year is the last thing on
your mind here in late July, were asking that you put it at the forefront of
your brain or at least in part of your
brain for a few moments.
What will be different about this
school year?
Were going to find out. Right now,
our reporters are compiling lists of

Any questions?
We are tracking down school leaders to
ask them questions about the upcoming
school year. So whats on your mind? Send
us your questions, and well do our best to
get answers.

questions for school leaders about the

new school year.
Are there new classes students and
parents need to know about?
How about scheduling changes?
Was any work done at the schools
over the summer?
Generally, well be asking school
leaders to tell us about things that
you parents, taxpayers and students
need to know before the 2016-17 school
year begins.
Then, we will pass that information
along to you.
Do you have any questions youd like
our reporters to ask? If so, the time to
act is now. The more questions we get
from you, the better prepared we can
be, and the better information we can

pass along to you.

Maybe you are concerned about the
budget (who isnt?). Or maybe youve
heard about a new program that you
think might be ideal for your child. Or
perhaps you are wondering about repairs that were scheduled for your
childs school.
Wed love to get those questions from
you. Just send an email to us so that we
can include them on our lists.
Most school districts have done a lot
in recent years to be more responsive
to questions submitted by the public. It
makes sense. Everyone wants to have
great schools. Everyone wants to keep
taxes as low as possible, while still providing great service. One of the best
ways to achieve these goals is to build a
true public-private partnership between schools and the communities
they serve. And building that relationship starts with effective communication.
So send us your questions. Well do
our best to get answers.

Board of Chosen Freeholders

partners for expanded EMS training
Burlington County Freeholder
Mary Ann OBrien recently announced that the Board of Chosen Freeholders will be utilizing
its shared services agreement
with Rowan College at Burlington
County and its partnership with
Virtua to provide enhanced and
expanded emergency medical
services training programs to
first responders and EMS personnel serving Burlington County.
In addition to basic emergency
medical technician training
courses, this partnership will also
offer refresher courses along with
a variety of electives to support
the continuing education of active EMTs throughout the region.
By offering these programs
through RCBC and their partnership with Virtua, our emergency
medical responders can take advantage of world class training
centers and expert professional

instruction; as well as having the

option to take courses in traditional classroom settings, online
or via satellite locations, and in
state-of-the-art simulation centers OBrien said.
This initiative will take effect
at the start of the fall 2016 academic year.
Supporting our emergency
medical responders is always a
priority and we are confident that
this partnership will elevate their
training and capabilities, ultimately allowing them to provide
even better service and care to
our residents, OBrien said.
Virtua has a long-standing tradition of providing emergency
medical service education and
training. Through this new partnership with RCBC, Virtuas comprehensive training programs
will include a full range of classes
ranging from initial EMT train-

ing, EMT/basic life support continuing education, paramedic

training
and
paramedic/advanced life support continuing
education.
High quality EMS education
and training are the foundation to
the ability of our responders to
provide the best care to the residents of the community, said
Scott Kasper, Virtua assistant
vice president of emergency services.
We are excited about the opportunity to partner with the
county, with RCBC and with each
of the BLS squads to ensure that
their members have access to the
best education in the region.
OBrien said the freeholder
board is proud to announce that it
will be covering the cost of course
materials for initial participants
in the new EMS Training courses
as the program rolls out.

Local landmarks, parks see influx of visitors to catch Pokmon

LOCAL
Continued from page 1
ever with 21 million active users,
surpassing Candy Crush Saga's
peak of 20 million.
A lot of people are playing it. I
drove down Main Street last night
and there were probably 50 people
walking down the street playing
it,
22-year-old
Christopher
Miller, an employee of Primo
Hoagies located at 41 E. Main St.,
said.
This immediate success has
left some wondering, what makes
the game so enticing? While some
attribute the communitys fondness for the game to its motivation to get outside and exercise,
others believe it has the ability to
increase social interaction among
local residents.
Local landmarks and parks
have seen an influx in visitors
due to the presence of the games
virtual characters stationed in
these locations. Businesses are
also benefiting from the game
through their use of lures in the
game that attract players to the
PokStops on their property.
Maurizio Randazzo, owner of
Maurizios Bistro located at 33 E.
Main St., admits that hes considered purchasing a lure for his
restaurant. In addition, he has
also capitalized on the gaming
sensation by offering $1 slices of
pizza to kids who come to Muarizios and present the app on their

phone.
The game is great for kids to
get exercise, but they must be
careful when crossing the
streets, Randazzo said. Ive
seen some kids who probably
walk 10 to 20 miles a day playing
this game hopefully they just
dont hurt themselves.
While the game seems like an
overall positive addition to the
mobile gaming community and
the physical community, it does
have its critics. In the past few
weeks, players of the game have
been seen with their eyes glued to
their phones even while crossing
streets and walking down sidewalks. If the distraction component of the game isnt dangerous
enough, there have also been reports of people breaching users
cyber security and using the
games lures and PokStops to
draw people in for possible kidnappings, thefts, muggings, etc.
In response, many news outlets
are releasing a series of safety
tips for kids playing the game,
which often range from telling
parents where he or she will be
headed, to not talking to
strangers,
to
traveling
to
PokStops with friends and staying in well-lit, public areas.
Even with these concerns, its
clear that participants of the
game dont plan to put down their
virtual Pokballs anytime soon.
From the Moorestown Mall to
Main Street, community members are out and about actively
seeking to catch em all.

24 JULY 27AUG. 2, 2016

Program will
start small
PROGRAM
Continued from page 4
Although the high school is excited to get the program underway, it expects a slow start picking and choosing which games to
broadcast while getting the program up on its feet. The immediate success of the network will
largely be determined by how
many students are willing and
wanting to participate, rather
than dropping the project all in
one persons lap.
While the school certainly
wants to cover as many of the
main events as possible, the official broadcast schedule has not
yet been determined. While it is
certain that junior varsity teams
will not receive coverage this
year, it is possible this may
change a couple years down the
road, providing more all-inclusive
coverage.
I dont think the network will
ever have much of a negative impact on our live audience attendance, Rosa said. In my eyes, I
dont believe people will ever
want to just sit at home because
they can watch a game on the web
instead.
So far, Moorestown High
School has used the network to
broadcast the 2016 NJSIAA Outdoor Track Championship, 2016
NJSIAA Group III Girls Lacrosse
Championship, 2016 NJSIAA
Group III Boys Lacrosse Championship and 2016 NJSIAA Indoor
Track Meet of Champions Championship. The schools 2016 graduation is also available to be
viewed on demand on the schools
network site.
To subscribe to MHSs broadcast network visit: www.nfhsnetwork.com/schools/moorestownhigh-school-moorestown-nj.
A
monthly pass will cost subscribers $14.95, whereas a seasonal pass is $50 for four months and
an annual pass is priced at $75 for
the year. An annual pass will automatically renew in a year from
time of purchase unless cancelled.

Markings help locate home in emergency

MARKINGS
Continued from page 1
companies completing the same
project at the end of last year. He
thought the concept was great,
and because the fire company is
always looking for new fundraising ideas, saw it as the perfect opportunity to raise money while simultaneously assisting the community.
The numberings consist of a
three-inch black number over a
white background and can be positioned in one of three places on
a property. First, they can be
painted on the front edge of the
curb if there is sufficient space,
and if not, they can alternatively
be painted on the top of the curb.
They can also be placed on the
road if no curb exists, and the
company aims to paint within six
feet of a homeowners driveway.
Rust-Oleum has donated all paint
needed to complete this initiative.
So far its been a very positive
experience, Moorestown born
and raised volunteer firefighter
Matt Walsh said. Weve only put
out information about us doing
this on two Facebook group
pages, and weve already painted
about 50 house numbers.
All
proceeds
from
this
fundraiser are being utilized by
the company to either purchase
new furniture for the fire department or to be put toward the Andrew Stowell Scholarship. This
scholarship remembers Stowell, a
member of the Moorestown Fire
Department and Hose Company
No. 1 who passed away at age 26
from a genetic heart defect in August 2014. Today, the $500 scholarship in his honor is awarded to a
graduating high school senior interested in pursuing a career in
emergency services or nursing.
There is no set limit of what
we would like to raise through
this fundraiser. To us, its more
about the opportunity it presents
in helping emergency staff find
the correct house in the shortest
period of time, Chezem said.
Whether were doing the painting or not, we couldnt care less,
we just want to encourage that
the painting be done to ultimately

help our guys in the case of an

emergency.
Although this opportunity
presents a voluntary option to
support the local fire department,
the department has stressed that
these markings will help emergency personnel to better locate a
house, even with their preexisting GPS devices, in the event of a
crisis. However, this option does
not replace the requirements set
forth in the code of the Township
of Moorestown Order Number
1785-96, Chapter 49.
To request that a house be
painted through this service, interested homeowners should contact
HoseCompanyNo1@
gmail.com. Payments for the
painting of house numbers can
also be made via PayPal using the
