First of all, I would like to highlight the upcoming RMC exhibition. If you read no
further, please take a look below. Hopefully you will want to enter! Also, Ive included
all spring and summer book arts events in our states for which I have information.
Thank you to all who submitted information for our newsletter.

Souvenir- Intent to Enter

A Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers
Exhibition
Theme
All work (binding, artist book, calligraphy, broadsides, etc.) will have content that
relates to the exhibit theme souvenir. The definition, a thing that is kept as a
reminder of a person, place, or event; from the Latin subvenre to come to mind,
lends itself to broad interpretation. Exhibitors will be asked to include a short
statement relating their work to the theme. Work that has not previously been
exhibited is preferred.
Intent to Enter Process
The Intent to Enter form is now available online. We will acknowledge receipt of your
intent and fee as it is received. Please let us know at any time if you need to drop out.
After the Intent to Enter form deadline, we will confirm your participation and provide

specific details on delivery of work and the final exhibition schedule.

See https://gbw.formstack.com/forms/souvenirexhibit_intent for the details.
Eligibility
Entrants must be members of the Guild of Book Workers, Rocky Mountain Chapter
and are limited to one submission. Exhibitors must remain a member of the chapter
for the duration of the exhibit tour. The non-refundable exhibition entry fee is $30.00
due with the intent to enter form. If you are not currently a chapter member, please
visit the GBW website https://guildofbookworkers.org and add the membership before
entering.
Size Limitation
The digital entry of every chapter member will be represented in our online catalog.
We plan to have a smaller selection travel around our region. Chapter members
Priscilla Spitler and Lang Ingalls have volunteered to help on the selection committee.
AZ, WY, UT and CO representatives have committed to finding exhibit space and we
welcome participation from each of our member states. If you are interested in having
the exhibit come to your state, please contact Karen Jones
karen.jones@jeffcolibrary.org
Its reasonable to expect that oversize structures will be difficult to display and ship,
so may be disqualified for travel. In fact, we reserve the right to disqualify any work
that becomes difficult to display due to weight, fragility, or size. We cannot accept any
work that requires special attention, such as electricity or complex set-up. If you
would like your piece to be considered for travel, please submit an object that is 18
or less, whether 2 or 3D.
All work must be submitted in a sturdy protective reusable enclosure for
transportation, such as a clamshell box.
Insurance & Shipping
We regret that there will not be insurance at every venue or special insurance for
transporting the show. Please keep this in mind when submitting work for the exhibit.
Guild member volunteers will oversee exhibition installation at each location. We will
arrange for items to be in closed cases where available, and work will not be handled
by the general public. Please assign a reasonable insurance value (max $1000) to
your work for those venues that are able to insure it. This insurance will cover the
cost of replacing the materials, not the value of the item. Delivery of the work to the
first venue is the responsibility of the entrant. Shipping details will be provided at the
time of submission. Work will be returned in their original packing boxes within a
month of the exhibitions close at the last venue. Entry fee includes return shipping.
Entrants are responsible for alerting the chapter of any change in shipping address.
Duration of Exhibition
The show will open in the late autumn of 2016 and will travel through 2017.

soon after.

Recent Events:
Gathering of the Guilds
Karen Jones represented the Guild of Book Workers Rocky Mountain Chapter at
Gathering of the Guilds, held Sunday, April 24, at the Boettcher Mansion in Golden,
CO. Sponsored by the Colorado Arts & Crafts Society, this annual event showcases
the best of craft in all media, including a wonderful collection of professional artists,
craftsman, metalsmiths, woodworkers and weavers selling their handcrafted items in
the following categories: Art, Book Binding, Calligraphy, Ceramics, Distilling, Fiber,
Furniture, Glass, Home Restoration, Jewelry, Knife Making, Paper, and Textiles.
Demonstrations, workshops, and presentations were held throughout the day.
Celebrating "Vessel"
Our chapter celebrated the GBW traveling exhibit, Vessel, with a presentation by
chapter member and Colorado exhibitor Lang Ingalls. Lang shared in detail the inlay
and incision techniques she's been perfecting to produce her beautiful entry. She
brought along her tools and a plaquette displaying the great variety of techniques
possible. We were in awe of her careful technique!
After her talk, we toured the exhibit in small groups, admiring the wide range of work
and trying to guess how some of it was even accomplished (a book in a bottle?!).
The show closed in Denver on April 12.

Book Art: One Theme, Three Interpretations University of Denver, March 30

One Theme, Three Interpretations featured open book presentations from Lang
Ingalls, Sammy Lee, and Gail Watson, three artists from the Rocky Mountain region
with varied concentrations and practices in the book arts. Each shared one artwork in
detail, exploring the materials, methods, and meanings involved and revealing their
creative process along the way. Alicia Bailey, owner/director of Abecedarian
Gallery introduced the presenters and served as moderator. This event was held in
conjunction with Vessel: the GBW Traveling Exhibit, on display at University of
Denver through April 12.

Denver Bookbinding Company, January 16-17. Students explored the Secret Belgian
structure and ways to modify it. Erin expertly guided students on making three
variations of the Secret Belgium Binding. On the second day, the class each
incorporated multiple techniques into the final book, which had three different types of
slotted stations, as well as Tyvek or Cave paper stations. The workshop was well

Things of Interest:
The Red Delicious Press in Aurora, CO is working on an original children's book,
which is a modern twist on the classic tale of The Little Engine That Could that
encourages sustainability and self-reliance. It will not be a hand-bound book, but the
illustrations are created with collagraph prints, and they are including original prints
as rewards in their Kickstarter. Here is the link to their Kickstarter:
