TESTING OF TOWERS

7.2

GENERAL

Technical Specification

All tests shall be carried out according to IEC specification by and at expenses of the
Contractor, who shall supply all tests and specimens as well as apparatus instruments, and
equipment. Tests shall be carried out in the presence and under the control of the inspecting
engineer of the Owner at suppliers work except if specified or approved cases where test
certificates are accepted.
Six copies of the Contractor's record of all tests shall be submitted to the Owner. The
acceptance of the Contractor's tender including his designs, specifications and drawings shall
not bind the Owner to accept any of the contract works, until they shall have passed the pre
described tests and have been approved in writing by the Owner.
The Contractor shall not be entitled to any extension of the time for completion by reason of
the failure of any or the time for completion by reason of the failure of any or the rejection of
any part of the materials of plant as a result of any test "the cost of testing shall be
considered to be included in the price quoted for the towers".
7.3

GUARANTEE VALUES
A guaranteed values shall mean a value given by the Contractor or that may be obtained by
calculation or interpolation from those value obtained from no tolerance shall be mentioned
from guaranteed values in tenders. All data and guaranteed clauses shall be in confonnity
with the conditions of tender and specifications.
The readings of testing instruments shall be corrected according to the approved calibration
results.

7.4

TESTS ON TOWERS
The acceptance of the Contractors tender, including his design, specifications and drawings
shall not bind OWNER to accept any type of towers until this type shall have been approved
before manufacture and passed the necessary type tests and been accepted in writing by
OWNER.
The type tests specified in the next Item (7.4) shall be canied out at the Manufacturers works
or other approved places.
If required by the inspecting engineer, type tests may be repeated from time to time on
towers assembled from members selected by him.
Testing places must be equipped with proper testing facilities.

7.5

TYPE TESTS
A sample of each used type of tower with its maximum extension shall be erected on a rigid
foundation at the manufactures work or other approved places in the presence of the
inspecting engineer, if the Contractor, carrying out erection on the site, proposes to assemble
the towers on the ground and subsequently raise them to the vertical position must inform
OWNER of his proposal. In this case the samples submitted for test shall be assembled and
raised to the vertical position on the test foundations in the presence of the inspecting
Engineer.

The towers shall be tested to the calculated loads after applying the specified factor of safety
including the material factor.
Test Sequence
For each case of loading, the test covers five steps of 50%, 75%, 90%, 95, I 00% of the
specified ultimate loads.
Only for the final 100% step the loads shall be maintained for minimum one minute and no
more than five minutes.

;l
To prove compliance with required guarantees, each sample shall withstand the applied
loads as mentioned before without showing any sign of failure or permanent deformation in
a part.
For the normal loading test case of each tower type and after passing successfully the 100%
test step, the loads shall be increased gradually until failure occurs.

IJ
t

After completion of the successful type test, members from the tested towers shall be
selected at random and tested to verify that their physical characteristics and within the
specification liinits.

7.5

REJECTION OF TOWERS
If any one of the towers of any type under the type test fails to satisfy the provisions of Type
Test Item (7.4), this tower type shall be rejected and the Contractor shall without extra cost
provide another tower of a stronger and stiffer construction for tests in the same way.
The dimensions of the towers provided by the Contractor shall be measured.and controlled at
the place of manufacture. If the general dimensions of any tower or the dimensions of any
pari for any paitieular type differ from those given in the drawing supplied by the Contractor
and approved by OWNER by more than 1% of their length or 5% of the linear dimensions
of their cross sections, such parts of towers shall be rejected and replaced by parts having
correct dimensions.

Verification of Dimensions
The dimensions of all towers provided by the Contractor shall be measured and controlled at
the place of manufacture.
If the general dimensions of any tower, or the dimensions of any part for any particular type,
differ from those given in the drawing supplied by the Contractor and approved by the
Owner by more than 1% of their length or 5% of the linear dimensions of their cross
sections, such parts of towers shall be rejected and replaced by parts having correct

approved manner in order to satisfY the condition specified herein.

b.

The Galvanization coat shall be subjected to mechanical shocks using hammer or

250gms weight and must withstand them without showing any signs of cracking or
pealing off.

The zinc layer should be more than 85U.m and shall be measured by using an approved
instrument

Physical Characteristics Test:

Member from the shipments shall be selected in random and tested to verifY that their
