The question what if we are able get an insight into our health and can detect the

possibilities of future disease gave birth to the idea of tattoo biosensors. In the
hectic life of this fast growing world, it is difficult for a person to acquire a regular
insight into his health and know whats going on in his body. Most of the worlds
population is unaware of the diseases they are about to have due to lack of the
information about their health. Either laboratory tests are expensive or time taking,
so it is difficult for people to track their health constantly.
A biosensor can provide the crucial information regarding a patients health in real
time. Rather than insisting on traditional analytical methods for sample extraction
and analysis, important technological concepts have been developed whereby
biosensors can be implemented directly on the textile or epidermis.
The field of wearable biosensors has developed substantially over the past decade,
but with health care applications more focused on the detection of physical
parameters such as heart rate, respiration rate, oxygenation of the blood, skin
temperature and blood pressure etc. Still little has been directed at the transduction
of chemical information residing on the epidermis of the subject. This can provide far
better insight into the overall health status than physical parameters alone can
provide.
The company Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget SCA is working with wearable
biosensors and has a product for pH detection. Therefore SCA performs the research
on developing the biosensor to detect the chemical parameters which can provide
the vital information about health. This Master of Science thesis is a part of this
research and a step in the development of tattoo biosensors. The study was
performed solely within SCA Research and development department.
The aim of this thesis is to give the reader an insight into the latest advancements
and developments in the field of wearable biosensor. Therefore the focus of the
thesis is in exploring different fabrication methodologies for developing a biosensor.
We will see the possibilities and limitations of the different fabrication
methodologies.
This thesis explores the biosensor that gives amperometric, potentiometric and
colorimetric outputs. Electronic system and circuits to wirelessly communicate
output to the display devices. These sensors explain the detection of glucose, pH
and different analytes in human perspiration. Study includes the ion selective
electrode method, array of sensors for multiplexed and simultaneous analysis, pH
reactive films and strips. Signal transduction, conditioning and processing are also
explained.

Though there are several excellent general reviews of biosensors and technology,
each to some extent reflects the authors personal research interests and expertise.
Due to the pace of development and breadth of research, a truly comprehensive

review is probably impossible, and certainly beyond the scope of this thesis. The
following brief review presents the fabrication and development of tattoo biosensors,
in addition to the principles of electrochemical and optical analysis.
