Roorkee observations with respect to the analysis and design of the Boys and Girls Hostel at
Lansdowne
STAAD Model: GARHWAL.std
1. In the above STAAD file, column no. 2046 (circular column with a diameter of 300 mm) is a floating
column in the sense that it is not continuous down to the foundation. Floating columns in seismic zones IV and
V are discouraged. Please re-examine this floating column for the possibility of its elimination.
2. Under the STAAD command 'DEFINE MATERIAL START', what does FCU 27579 stand for. The
programme is reporting an error message because of this command. Please check and rectify if necessary.
3. It appears from the STAAD model that irrespective of the span, all beams have been assigned a size of 230
mm (b) x 600 mm (D). For example, beam number 136 with a span of 6.44 m has a section of 230 mm x 600
mm and the same is the size of beam number 131 having a span of 1.55 m. For better accuracy of modeling, it
is requested that realistic sizes should be assigned to the beams depending upon their spans. Of course, in
order to reduce the number of beam sections from practical considerations, grouping of the beams in terms of
selected sizes may be done. Please examine and revise, if necessary.
4. Please note that the beam between node nos. 120 and 137 has also been assigned a size of 230 mm x 600
mm although its span is 9.48 m. For such a span, the assigned size will result in a very heavy steel
requirement. Similarly, the assigned size of 230 mm x 600 mm for the beam between the nodes 53 and 54 is
inadequate considering that the span of this member is about 10.8 m. Please check and revise if necessary.

1. Under the STAAD PRO command 'DEFINE MATERIAL START', what concrete grade is implied by the
command 'STRENGTH FCU 27579'?
2. In the case of this building also it is seen that irrespective of the spans, a section 300 mm wide and 600 mm
deep has been assigned to all the beams. This is unrealistic unless and untill the same is intended in practice.
Please check and revise if necessary.
3. In the attached drawings, some suggestions have been made for revision in the framing plan of this building
so that relatively more regular shapes are obtained for the slab panels of this building. Please examine and
revise if deemed fit. The use of slab panels with a complex plan geometry is discouraged.
