NRA hypocrisy?
Dear Editor:
In his recent letter [COURIER, July
22], Merrill Ring seeks to equate the National Rifle Association, the gun manufacturing industry and our Second
Amendment with the July 7 anti-police,
anarchist shooter in Dallas.
Mr. Ring goes on to assert, without citing a source, of course (because none exists), that the Dallas shooter acted on a
major NRA principle, namely, opposition to tyrannical government. He then
sums things up by accusing the NRA of
hypocrisy for not supporting the anarchist shooter. The proper word(s) to employ here would not be hypocrisy but,
rather, non-sequitur.
For the benefit of those who may be
wondering, a much better indicator of
tyrannical government would beno,
not the Dallas police forcebut a government with an elected leader whose ultimate guide to Constitutional action is
whether he has a pen and a phone.

Selective service
Dear Editor:
Theres a big chunk missing from both
candidates and their parties. Both Hillary
and Donald have raved about rebuilding
our military, realizing the need to relieve
and expand our military from the current
exhausted and overly-utilized regular,
guard and reserve, volunteer troops.
Where is the affirmation that we must
have a renewed, universal (both men and
women) selective service program, if our
military is to be restored to the anticipated levels for optimum effectiveness in
the upcoming defense against ISIS,
etc.?

A man on a bicycle was arrested after
swiping a wallet and credit cards from a
south Claremont business. Michael
Orozco, 36, from Azusa, was in a business on the 700 block of South Indian
Hill Boulevard around 4 p.m. when he
saw the unattended wallet and took it. He
reportedly used the credit cards at a couple of local businesses before getting
caught near the intersection of Arrow
Highway and Indian Hill, Lt. Mike
Ciszek said. Mr. Orozco was arrested
and charged with burglary, grand theft
and receiving stolen property and transported to CPD jail.

A transient was arrested on a drunk in
public charge after witnesses saw him
fall into some bushes. Frank Mowrey,
54, was observed staggering and falling
into the bushes around 6:40 p.m. on the
900 block of West Foothill Boulevard.
When police arrived, they located 18
empty beer bottles and cans nearby, Lt.
Ciszek said. According to police, Mr.
buildings on the north end of the property have been torn down to build a
larger sales lot, and a building at the
south end is undergoing conversion
from a maintenance garage to a showroom and service facility.
The roundabout is currently six feet
above grade, and will be re-graded to
increase visibility of the upcoming
showroom from the street.
The far west portion of Auto Center

been used for over five years prior to
the acquisition by Premier in 2015, Mr.

EDUCATION
he Claremont Unified School District will host its annual Food Tasting Faire on Friday, August 5 from
9 a.m. to noon, giving families in the district a chance to weigh in on food choices
that could make their way onto the menu
at local schools.
Some 700 people typically turn out for the faire,
held in the multipurpose room at El Roble Intermediate School (665 N. Mountain Ave.), sampling free
food and filling out a questionnaire gauging which
dishes are hits and which are misses.
The event will feature 26 vendors, providing lunch
and breakfast items. Its also a good chance for attendees to meet the local farmers who provide CUSD
with organic produce and for those who believe they
may qualify to sigh up for the free lunch program.
We have an opportunity for parents to look, taste
and ask questions about the food their kids are going
to be eating, Nutrition Services Director Rick Cota
said. The last couple years, weve committed to the
things that scored highly and have added them to the
menu, so theres a direct impact.
Getting feedback is more important than ever, according to Mr. Cota.
Two years ago, strict new requirements mandated
by The Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act were fully implemented. Any school wishing to participate in free
meal programs like the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), the National School Breakfast Program
(NSBP) and the Summer FoodService Programall
of which are reimbursed by the United State Department of Agriculturehas some strict dietary guidelines to follow.
Every meal must feature a fruit or vegetable and a
whole grain food. Portions must be larger and contain
less calories, zero trans-fat, less sugar and 80 percent
less sodium than previously allowed.
I think whether you are a student or whether you
are an adult, if you take out 80 percent of the sodium
that you are eating, youre going to notice, he said.
The act, championed Michelle Obama and signed
into law in December of 2010, is aimed at reducing
obesity and related illnesses like Type 2 Diabetes. Opponents, however, argue its provisions are so strict
they are driving kids away from the cafeteria altogether.
Most districts have not been able to maintain,
Mr. Cota said. They are suffering 10 percent or more
drops.
More than 500 schools across the nation have
dropped out of the free lunch program in order to
have more freedom. Thats not an option for CUSD,
Mr. Cota said, because the district has a significant
number of students from low-income families who
rely on subsidized meals.
CUSD has fared better than many districts, with
meal numbers remaining stable at the elementary
school level. The district has, however, seen a reduction in the number of lunches purchased at El Roble
Intermediate and Claremont High School.
Any loss of sales, however small, is likely a blow
to Mr. Cota, who hit the ground running when he assumed his post in 2008.
He took over a program where virtually all food
was frozen and pre-prepared. Within three years, he
was overseeing a kitchen where 75 percent of the
food was made from scratch.
Students and families responded enthusiastically
and CUSD went from serving a little over 300,000
school meals per year to serving 600,000.
Fast forward to 2016 and CUSD is down to only
about 40 percent fresh-made food.
We are kind of headed back in the other direction
because of having to serve more and more food pro-
y teenage son, Diego, is spending this month on a youth exchange program in Japan.
Although it was my idea that he experience the world, I miss him tremendously
and find myself clutching the phone (like
a teenager myself), hoping he will call or
text.
On his first call, he reported that communication
with his homestay father verged on the hysterical
Google Translate was eventually discarded for pen,
paper and rudimentary drawings. The second time he
phoned, he had no time to visit or share his Japan
tales. He had an urgent demand: an international dataroaming plan so that he could play Pokmon GO!
Diego had found himself in the heart of Pokland.
Having seen Claremont turn into a crowded causeway
of single-minded, blurry-eyed, screen-staring walkers,
I can only imagine the streets of Tokyo. Personally, I
have very little interest in the game, but I am certainly
intrigued by its name. The word Pokmon was derived from a process known as wasei-eigo, or Japanmade English.
Wasei-eigo refers to the borrowing of English
words by Japanese and the subsequent transformation
of those words. Letters that dont exist in Japanese,
such as l and b, are switched for r and v and the
Japanese pattern of consonant-vowel-consonant-
LEX

CITY
vowel is imposed. Most interestingly, the meaning of
the English word is somewhat manipulated.
For example, the English words magic and tape
are put together to form majikkutpu, which means
Velcro in Japanese English. Health and meter form
herusu mt to mean bathroom scale, and guard and
man form gdo man meaning security guard.
After much use, these words often diverge so far
from their original English meaning that they define
concepts that are unfamiliar to non-Japanese. Consider the term sarariman, salary man. Although we
dont actually have this expression in English, the
Japanese formed the noun out of English words
salary and man to mean male office worker.
Other examples are pp doraiba from paper and
driver, to describe a person who has a drivers license but rarely drives, and pea rukku from pair
look, which identifies couples who like to dress in
twin outfits (you know the ones).
Some of the more colorful wasei-eigo terms are ny
hfu, from the words new and half, meaning trans-
gender, and paipu katto, from pipe and cut, meaning vasectomy (no, I am not making this up). Try saying them yourself and you can hear the root word.
Despite these grin-inducing options, currently the
most globally recognized wasei-eigo word is Pokmon. The only other wasei-eigo word to have
achieved such popularity in the Western world is
karaoke, a combination of the Japanese kara, empty
and the English orchestra, okesutora.
According to a recent article in Time magazine, in
the mid-1990s, Pokmon developer Satoshi Tajiri
took the first syllables of the words pocket and
monster, which became poketto monsut in waseiego. Mashing them together, he came up with the
three-syllable sensation, Pokmon. The monsters,
themselves, also derive their names from Japanese
English. Some of my favorites are Machoke from
macho and choke, Exeggcute from egg and execute and Mareep from Mary (of Mary had a little
lamb) and sheep.
Unfortunately for Diego, I was not willing to pay
the exorbitant sum required for international data
roaming in Japan, so he will be forced to forego hunting for Jumpfluf, Snorlax and Electabuzz for now.
Perhaps he will spend his last week in Japan like the
kids from pre-wi-fi days engaged in activities such as
watching prime-time TVgruden aw (golden
hour), visiting a bar with live musicraibu hausu
(live house), or simply developing close relationshipssukinshippu (skin ship) with the other teens at
the local geimu sentaa (game center) video arcade.

This was so the city could make a decision about an overpass before a February 2017 deadline set by the Construction Authority. Failure to build
overpasses at the time of line construction will result in massively higher
costs to do so after the line is built.
On Tuesday, July 26, some seven
months prior to the February deadline,
city staff suddenly recommended, and
the council voted, to reject the offer of a
$20 million overpass, which would have
been built by the Construction Authority
at no cost to the city. This action was
taken without holding commission
meetings and with little advance public
notice. This is open and transparent government in Claremont?
At commission meetings, citizens of
Claremont could have learned about
how many light rail trains per hour (the
line capacity is 40) will be passing
through the city and about how many
minutes per hour the at-grade crossing
at Indian Hill Boulevard will be

Unfortunately, we do not have that funding available to contribute to the construction of the four-span
bridge design, due to the other obligations which we
have, Mr. Ramos said. And I dont foresee any grant
opportunities available for this purpose.
Mr. Ramos warned the council and residents in attendance that the Gold Line being built at-grade would
create a large inconvenience to motorists who attempt to travel through a clogged Indian Hill Boulevard. According to the report, one light rail train is
expected to cross Indian Hill every five minutes, with a
gate-down time of around 45 seconds each time.

Traffic on Indian Hill Boulevard in the Village has been getting worse for years as a result of a combination
of the popularity of local shops and increased population. The city council approved a plan to keep the future Metro Gold Line light rail at grade level, which would likely increase congestion in the area.
noting that either option could potentially anger residents in the future. Mr. Lyons believes that the frequency of the passing Gold Line trains might unintentionally disrupt the cohesiveness of the Village.
Everything that I see us having worked for in bringing and opening up the community, including the south
Village development that might occur, will be made
much more difficult by having all of those trains coming through on ground level, Mr. Lyons said.
Mr. Pedroza wrestled with the question of whether
eschewing the bridge is short-sighted.
Part me does feel that 10 years from now, if we
have a traffic mess, its going to be because of us if we
didnt go for this, Mr. Pedroza said. And it will be
one of those situations [where well say] What the
heck were we thinking, back in 2016.
But Mr. Pedroza noted many other smaller communities in the San Gabriel Valleyincluding South
Pasadena and Arcadiahad few problems with an atgrade crossing. I strongly believe thats going to be the
case with Claremont, he said.
On the heels of the bridge vote, the council also
unanimously voted to support Metros upcoming tax
measure that would pay for the Gold Line expansion,

of the property. You should also be aware that the lien
being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the
highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being
auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this
property by contacting the county recorders office or a
title insurance company, either of which may charge you
a fee for this information. If you consult either of these
resources, you should be aware that the same lender may
hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property.

Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid
less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time
of the sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt
NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date
shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or
more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a
court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee
sale postponements be made available to you and to the
public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If
you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date
for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-960-8299
or visit this Internet Web site http://www.altisource.
com/MortgageServices/DefaultManagement/TrusteeServices.aspx using the file number assigned to this case
2015-04174-CA. Information about postponements
that are very short in duration or that occur close in time
to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected
in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site.
The best way to verify postponement information is to
attend the scheduled sale.

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER
ESTATE OF HAROLD W. HOFMAN, JR.
Case No. 16STPB02270
To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the
will or estate, or both, of HAROLD W. HOFMAN, JR.
A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by
Richard F. Parker in the Superior Court of California,
County of LOS ANGELES.
THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that
Richard F. Parker be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent.
THE PETITION requests the decedent's will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the
court.
THE PETITION requests authority to administer the
estate under the Independent Administration of Estates
Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval.
Before taking certain very important actions, however,
the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent
administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows
good cause why the court should not grant the authority.
A HEARING on the petition will be held on August
25, 2016 at 8:30 AM in Dept. No. 67 located at 111 N.
Hill St., Los Angeles, CA 90012.
IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you
should appear at the hearing and state your objections or
file written objections with the court before the hearing.
Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney.
IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the
court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four
months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b)
of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the
date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice
under section 9052 of the California Probate Code.
Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult
with an attorney knowledgeable in California law.
YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If
you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with
the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154)
of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate
Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form
is available from the court clerk.

Notice of Divided Publication
Pursuant to Revenue and Taxation Code (R&TC) Section 3381, the Notice of Sale of Tax-Defaulted Property Subject to the Tax Collectors Power to Sell in and for
the County of Los Angeles, State of California, has been
divided and distributed to various newspapers of general
circulation published in said County for publication of
a portion thereof, in each of the said newspapers.
Notice of Public Auction
of Tax-Defaulted Property Subject to
the Tax Collectors Power to Sell (Sale No. 2016B)
Made pursuant to R&TC Section 3702
Whereas, on May 3, 2016, I, JOSEPH KELLY, Treasurer and Tax Collector, was directed by the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles, State of California, to sell at online auction certain tax-defaulted properties, which are subject to the Tax Collectors power to
sell. Public notice is hereby given that unless said properties are redeemed prior thereto, I will, beginning on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at 3:00 p.m. (Pacific Time), offer for sale and sell said properties at an online auction
to the highest bidder for cashiers check, bank-issued money order, or wire transfer in lawful money of the United States for not less than the minimum bid. The sale will
run continuously through Tuesday, August 9, 2016, at
12:00 p.m. (Pacific Time) at www.bid4assets.com/losangeles. Parcels that receive no bid will not be re-offered
for a reduced minimum price.
The minimum bid for each parcel will be $1,426.00, as
authorized by R&TC Section 3698.5(c), and Los Angeles
County Code Section 4.64.150.
Prospective bidders may obtain registration and detailed
information of this sale at www.bid4assets.com/losangeles. Bidders will be required to submit a refundable deposit of $5,000 at www.bid4assets.com/losangeles. Online registration will begin on Friday, July 1, 2016, at 8:00
a.m. and end on Friday, July 29, 2016, at 5:00 p.m. (Pacific Time).

call Bid4Assets at 1(877) 427-7387. Registration must
be completed by Tuesday, July 26, 2016. Only cashiers
check, bank-issued money order, or wire transfer will be
accepted at the time of registration.
Pursuant to R&TC Section 3692.3, all property is sold
as is and the County and its employees are not liable for
the failure of any electronic equipment that may prevent
a person from participating in the sale.
If the property is sold, parties of interest, as defined by
R&TC Section 4675, have a right to file a claim with the
County for any proceeds from the sale, which are in excess of the liens and costs required to be paid from the
proceeds. If excess proceeds result from the sale, notice
will be given to parties of interest, pursuant to law.
All information concerning redemption of taxdefaulted property will be furnished, upon request, by
JOSEPH KELLY, Treasurer and Tax Collector.
If redemption of the property is not made according to
law before Friday, August 5, 2016, 5:00 p.m. (Pacific

ing off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are
encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size
of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by
contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance
company, either of which may charge you a fee for this
information. If you consult either of these resources, you
should be aware that the same Lender may hold more
than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER
ESTATE OF JACK D. WORDEN
CASE NO. 16STPB01932
To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors,
and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will
or estate, or both, of JACK D. WORDEN
A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by
MELANIE HILL in the Superior Court of California,
County of Los Angeles.
THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that
MELANIE HILL be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent.
THE PETITION requests the decedents will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the
court.
The PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act.
(This authority will allow the personal representative to
take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the
personal representative will be required to give notice to
interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested
person files an objection to the petition and shows good
cause why the court should not grant the authority.
A HEARING ON THE PETITION WILL BE HELD
