Why did you chose Architecture?

I am pretty sure you hear these words already from your professors during first day of class in freshmen year. Or if
you are reading this and you are an upcoming freshman architecture student I am hundred percent sure that you will
come across this question a lot. Truth to be told, I still ponder the same question whenever I am on my seventh revision of
my plans. In other words, my stress level at work is on peak. So every time this happens, I try to remain calm and positive
through recalling facts or events in my life that made me fall in love with Architecture.

1.

Born on February 17 1995 at Angono Rizal. It is a small town in Philippines wherein it is known as the home of
countrys finest artists. Being raised on a place where art pieces are spread around every streets, it helped me to
develop my awareness and love for Filipino art. Thus, this created an impact on my designs through incorporating
the beauty of local art in my interiors.

2. God led me to Architecture. I never pictured myself as an Architect when I was a kid. My dream back then was to
be a renowned fashion designer but I guess God had better plans for me because for the first time in my life I felt
love at first sight, He made me fall in love with one of his homes, the San Sebastian Church. Seeing the structure
right in front of my eyes gave me the motivation to earnestly pursue Architecture and believe that one day, I will
design a church that will not only fall in love with just the structure, but with Christ too
Remember, that even if our plans do not turnout the way we wanted it to be. Gods writing is better
than ours. So trust and believe in him because the best is yet to come
3. I did not graduate on time! I graduated from Mapua Institute of Technology a year and a half late compared to some of my batch mates. I
may have received my diploma a few years later than the rest, but I took home the Best Thesis award and bagged several awards outside the country. This
is a fact about me that for some people may be unacceptable but I view it differently - I have no regrets! This is one of my events in life that shaped me to
who I am today and what I will contribute in the field of architecture and interior design in the future.

4. How did you even become an architect?! This is a mess! Revise! nightmare words said to me by my boss
when I landed my first job as a licensed architect. My project was to design a bungalow house that can
accommodate a family of 9 in a limited lot. Maybe because I wanted to show off my skills, my design had become
too complex for liking and too expensive for the family. Year after, I own a booming architectural firm Reyes Exterior
+ Interior and my ex-boss is now my best friend. His criticism became an eye-opener for me to see the bigger
picture, to work harder and developed my own style in designing.
Be open to criticisms. It may sound badly in some ways but it will help you to grow. Treat them like
they are teachers in your goals guiding you to reach the top.

5. From M.I.T to M.I.T. From Mapua Cardinals to Tim the Beaver. Who would have thought that the girl who got tons
of failing grades in college and got her diploma late will actually get to study in one the biggest schools in the world,
Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Even though it is hard for me being away from my family and met people
who keeps on pulling me down, I must stay strong and finish the year left for my Master of Architecture. Because
this is not only for me but also for God and my family.
Always believe that there is a rainbow of hope in every storm, a reward in every sacrifices and light
after darkness. Be courageous my dear, because these struggles will yield you strength and every pain
you feel will all be worth it at the end.
6. This is it! Originally, this is not included in my facts but after receiving a call from my friend just this few minutes
ago, I hurriedly called my editor and said that I needed to add this sixth paragraph. Well, because Finally! A client
called our firm and asking us to design a small church in Cebu, Philippines. DREAM COME TRUE! No
words cannot describe my happiness. Gods power is indeed special!
Work hard! Dream big! Remember God is writing your story, give all your worries to him and he will
transform it into something special! Live by faith and not by sight!
