COURSE SYLLABUS FOR CTE SPORTS MEDICINE

Course description:
Career and Technical Education (CTE) Sports Medicine is a course designed to
provide a well-rounded and challenging academic experience for students
interested in athletic training, physical therapy, exercise science, sports medicine,
or any other related medical field. This one year course will cover several sports
medicine topics including the following:
Taping, Splinting, Athletic injuries, Injury evaluations, Special tests, Palpation,
Anatomy, Concussions, Heat illness, And more...

Course Goals/Objectives:
To gain an overview of the basics of Athletic Training and the Sports Medicine
field.
To demonstrate and discuss the role of a Certified Athletic Trainer.
To instruct students in basic first aid and emergency care under the direction of
an ATC.
To demonstrate appropriate taping and wrapping techniques for athletic injuries.
To demonstrate prevention and rehabilitation techniques for athletic injuries.
Course Required Activities/Expectations:
This course will be comprised of power point lectures, worksheets, book work, in
class labs including taping and evaluating injuries, and group projects. You are
expected to participate in class each day as this will be a large portion of your
course grade. This includes class discussion, activities, labs, taping, and group
project. You are expected to come to class on time and prepared. Make up work
will be the responsibility of the student. You will be expected to contact me for

make up work. Make up tests must be made up on the students own time
(before/after school, break, lunch) within one week of the original test date.

Classroom Rules:
Respect others in the classroom
Show up to class on time
Come to class prepared
Participate in all activities and assignments
No throwing paper, tape, etc.
No wasting tape or using tape inappropriately
Clean up after yourself each day
Cell phones need to be put away unless finished with everything
Ask anytime before leaving the classroom
Stay seated in your own seat unless told otherwise
Stay seated in your seat until the bell rings, do not crowd around the door
Do not enter the middle room or areas around my desk without permission
*Any breaking of the rules will result in losing points from your grade!
*Any throwing, wasting, or inappropriate use of tape or supplies will result in the
loss of taping privileges for the remainder of that section and a ZERO on the
taping test and stamp card
Stamp Cards:
I will be grading at times using stamp cards. Each assignment will be stamped of
and the stamp card will be turned in at the end of the section. Losing the stamp
card will result in a ZERO for that section.
Late Work:
Any work can be made up until the end of each semester. However, all late work
will be accepted for half credit (50%).
Grading Procedures

Grades are based on total points earned for the year. Each assignment is worth
points with projects and quizzes usually worth more in points. Points will be
tallied up at the end of each semester and turned into a percentage.
Grading will be as followed:
A=90-100%
B=80-89%
C=70-79%
D=60-69%
F=0-59%
