Spring 2013

Project 3 : Name Plate

Name:__________________________________

Score:__________

1. Subject: NC and CNC Programming

2. Unit: Programming and Producing A Part
3. Learning Objectives:
a. Students will demonstrate understanding blueprints by
successfully interpreting drawings to create toolpaths.
b. Students will demonstrate an understanding of CNC program
commands by creating a project within a given set of
specifications.
c. Students will successfully program, interpret, and machine a
project based on skills learned in class.
d. Students will apply knowledge of CNC programming by solving
issues found in programs not functioning properly.
e. Students will identify basic machining aspects to successfully
build products.
f. Students will demonstrate proper safety, setup, and operation of
a computer automated manufacturing (CAM) systems.
4. Activity: Students will be programming their name to cut out on the
cnc mill. They will go through all steps from inputting points to actually
setting up the machine and cutting out their part.
5. Materials: Students will need access to computer, HAAS Trainer, HAAS
Vertical Machining Center, and material for machining.
6. Assessment instrument: Finished product and testing of their abilities
along the way.
7. Standards:
a. Given the proper tools, the student will demonstrate understanding
and skill related to measurement and quality control.

b. Given the proper tools the student will demonstrate the knowledge and
ability to skillfully operate the Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) Mill.

8. Use of assessment results: Both me and my students will see how they
are understanding the subject matter. We can conclude where the
students need more practice and training and where they are
successful.
9. Feedback: Students will receive their projects and other students as
well as myself will give positive criticism.

build products.
f. Students will demonstrate proper safety, setup, and operation of
a computer automated manufacturing (CAM) systems.
Project Details: Students will use the following steps to create their name
plate.
1. Create a sketch of plate with name.
2. Plot design and find designate coordinates for programming.
3. Create program in CIMCO Editor, text editor, or on the HAAS interface.
4. Verify and correct program on HAAS interface trainer.
5. Correctly check machine levels and run warm-up program
6. Square vice
7. Load tools and set offsets
8. Run Part
9. Part cleanup
10.Self grade and grade others

Specifications:
Material: 2 X X Length needed of flat bar 6061 Aluminum
Cutting Tools: one 1/8 diameter ball or flat endmill (student choice) for
engraving 1/16-1/8 (student choice) deep
One diameter flat endmill for cutting ends of name plate
Grading: Projects will be graded in four areas: Planning, Program Structure,
Machine Operation, Finished Product. Students will grade themselves and three
other students as assigned.
