Tracy!ChapmanI!Mountains!O!Things!
The life I've always wanted
I guess I'll never have
I'll be working for somebody else
Until I'm in my grave
I'll be dreaming of a live of ease
And mountains
Oh mountains o' things
To have a big expensive car
Drag my furs on the ground
And have a maid that I can tell
To bring me anything
Everyone will look at me with envy and with greed
I'll revel in their attention
And mountains
Oh mountains o' things
Sweet lazy life
Champagne and caviar
I hope you'll come and find me
Cause you know who we are
Those who deserve the best in life
And know what the money's worth
And those whose sole misfortune
Was having mountains o' nothing at birth
Oh they tell me
There's still time to save my soul
They tell me
Renounce all
Renounce all those material things you gained by
Exploiting other human beings
Consume more than you need
This is the dream

Make you pauper

Or make you queen
I won't die lonely
I'll have it all prearranged
A grave that's deep and wide enough
For me and all my mountains o' things
Oh they tell me
There's still time to save my soul
They tell me
Renounce all
Renounce all those material things you gained by
Exploiting other human beings
Mostly I feel lonely
Good good people are
Good people are only
My stepping stones
It's gonna take all my mountains o' things
To surround me
Keep all my enemies away
Keep my sadness and loneliness at bay
The life I've always wanted
I guess I'll never have
I'll be working for somebody else
Until I'm in my grave
I'll be dreaming of a live of ease
And mountains
Oh mountains o' things

I'll be dreaming, dreaming...

Impact of Childhood Relationships

Objective: To examine the characteristics and positive and negative traits of your parents/caretakers.
Essential Question:
1. Do those who first taught you to love define the characteristics you look for in a
boyfriend/girlfriend?
2. Do your early interactions with loved ones shape the way you interact with your partner as an
adult?
Step 1: Guided Visualization
Step 2: Recording and Creating Understanding
Directions: Use the information you gathered in your visualization to complete the following:
1. In the top half of the oval, under the letter A, record the positive traits of all your early care
givers.
a. Lump all the positive traits of your caretakers together; it is not necessary to separate
them.
b. List the traits as you recall them from childhood, not as they are today.
c. Describe them with simple adjectives or phrases. For example: kind, warm, intelligent,
religious, creative, always there, enthusiastic
2. In the bottom half of the oval, under the letter B, record the negative traits of all your early
care givers.
a. Again, lump all the negative traits of your caretakers together and describe them with
simple adjectives or phrases. For example: detached, angry, depressed, uncaring, verbally
abusive, physically abusive, alcoholic

3. After you have filled in the circle, circle the positive and negative traits that seem to affect you
the most.
! 46!
!

Step 3: Positive Childhood Memories

Directions:
1. In the first column list the positive experiences you remember with each caretaker from your
childhood.
2. In the second column list the most positive feelings you associate with that caretaker.
Positive Behavior or Experience

Positive Feeling

! 47!
!

Step 4: Childhood Frustrations

Directions:
1. In the first column list the frustrating experiences you remember with each caretaker from your
childhood.
2. In the second column list negative feelings you associate with each specific frustration. (again a
feeling can be described with one word: angry, helpless, sad, anxious, afraid, disgusted)
3. In the third column describe the way you reacted to each frustration.
Frustration

Step 5: Free-write
Directions: Using the information you have gathered so far respond to the prompt below. You should
respond to the prompt for each caretaker you examined today.

Creating a Positive Mantra

Objective: To create positive mantras that replace the shameful negative feeling we have about
ourselves.
Essential Question:
1. Where do my negative thoughts about myself come from? How do they affect me?
2. What is shame and how does it effect me?
2. What do I need to do to change those shameful negative thoughts?
Directions: Watch the Ted Talk, The Power of Vulnerability and complete the activities below.
https://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_on_vulnerability
As you watch: Bren Brown defines several terms throughout the talk. She continually goes back to
them and adds more, giving deeper understandings of truly complex feelings and emotions. For each
term in the organizer jot down notes that help you to define and understand these terms.
Shame:

Vulnerability:

Blame:

Guilt:

Sense of Worthiness

After you watch:

What are your reactions? How did what she said make you feel?

What makes you feel vulnerable? Do you agree that this is weakness?

Why do you need to know your shame?

Moving Beyond your Shame: Create a Positive Mantra

Directions: Use the information you gathered last class to complete the following:
1. Examine the traits you identified and ask do these traits lead you to create shameful negative
feelings about yourself or negative expectations of others? If so describe them below.

2. Examine the frustrating experiences you identified and ask do these frustrating experiences lead
you to create shameful negative feelings about yourself or negative expectations of others? If
so describe them below.

3. List your negative feelings about yourself and your negative expectations of others in the
appropriate columns below.

4. Look over your list of shameful negative feelings and negative expectations of others. Do
these feelings keep you from feel worthy of love? If they do, think back on your
relationships (friends, BF or GF, relatives, teachers) and ask how has this shame
impacted your relationships?

5. Create a positive affirmation to replace each of the negative feelings and expectations you listed.

Males vs. Females

Objectives:
1. To explore the differences in regards to gender perspectives in relationships.
2. To explore the gender perspectives of society and how they differ from the perspectives of
individuals.
3. To examine the impact of those perspectives on relationships.
Essential Question:
1. What are the differences between the ways men and women view relationships?
2. How do those views on relationships change from the individual to the group perspective?
3. Why do you think these gender differences exist?

Though we adore men individually, we agree that as a group theyre rather stupid.

Sex, Lies & Conversation Men Never Listen And Women Always
Interrupt. Or So It May Seem.
July 23, 1990|By DEBORAH TANNEN, The Washington Post

I was addressing a small gathering in a suburban Virginia living room -- a women`s group that had
invited men to join them. Throughout the evening, one man had been particularly talkative, frequently
offering ideas and anecdotes, while his wife sat silently beside him on the couch. Toward the end of the
evening, I commented that women frequently complain that their husbands don`t talk to them. This man
quickly concurred. He gestured toward his wife and said, ``She`s the talker in our family.`` The room
burst into laughter; the man looked puzzled and hurt. ``It`s true,`` he explained. ``When I come home
from work I have nothing to say. If she didn`t keep the conversation going, we`d spend the whole
evening in silence.``
This episode crystallizes the irony that although American men tend to talk more than women in public
situations, they often talk less at home. And this pattern is wreaking havoc with marriage.
The pattern may have been first observed by political scientist Andrew Hacker in the late `70s.
Sociologist Catherine Kohler Riessman reports in her new book, Divorce Talk, that most of the women
she interviewed -- but only a few of the men -- gave lack of communication as the reason for their
divorces. Given the current divorce rate of nearly 50 percent, that amounts to millions of cases in the
United States every year -- a virtual epidemic of failed conversation.
In my own research, complaints from women about their husbands most often focused not on
tangible inequities, such as having given up the chance for a career to accompany a husband for his, or
doing far more than their share of daily life-support work like cleaning, cooking, social arrangements and
errands. Instead, they focused on communication: ``He doesn`t listen to me,`` ``He doesn`t talk to
me.`` I found, as Hacker observed years before, that most wives want their husbands to be, first and
foremost, conversational partners, but few husbands share this expectation of their wives.
In short, the image that best represents the current crisis is the stereotypical cartoon scene of
a man sitting at the breakfast table with a newspaper held up in front of his face, while a woman glares
at the back of it, wanting to talk.
WHY CAN`T WE TALK?
How can women and men have such different impressions of communication in marriage? Why the
widespread imbalance in their interests and expectations?
In the April issue of American Psychologist, Stanford Universitys Eleanor Maccoby reports the results
of her own and others` research showing that children`s development is most influenced by the social
structure of peer interactions. Boys and girls tend to play with children of their own gender, and their
sex-separate groups have different organizational structures and interactive norms.
I think these systematic differences in childhood socialization make talk between women and men
like cross-cultural communication, heir to all the attraction and pitfalls of that enticing but difficult
enterprise. My research on men`s and women`s conversations uncovered patterns similar to those
described for children`s groups. For women, as for girls, intimacy is the fabric of relationships, and talk
is the thread from which it is woven. Little girls create and maintain friendships by exchanging secrets;
similarly, women regard conversation as the cornerstone of friendship. So a woman expects her husband
to be a new and improved version of a best friend. What is important is not the individual subjects that
are discussed but the sense of closeness, of a life shared, that emerges when people tell their thoughts,
! 72!
!

feelings and impressions.

Bonds between boys can be as intense as bonds among girls, but they are based less on talking,
more on doing things together. Because they don`t assume talk is the cement that binds a relationship,
men don`t know what kind of talk women want, and they don`t miss it when it isn`t there. Boys` groups
are larger, more inclusive and more hierarchical, so boys must struggle to avoid the subordinate position
in the group. This may play a role in women`s complaints that men don`t listen to them. Some men really
don`t like to listen because being the listener makes them feel one-down, like a child listening to adults
or an employee to a boss.
Often when women tell men, ``You aren`t listening,`` and the men protest, ``I am,`` they are
right. The impression of not listening results from misalignments in the mechanics of conversation. The
misalignment begins as soon as a man and a woman take physical positions. This became clear when I
studied videotapes made by psychologist Bruce Dorval of children and adults talking to their same-sex
best friends. I found that at every age, the girls and women faced each other directly, their eyes
anchored on each other`s faces. At every age, the boys and men sat at angles to each other and looked
elsewhere in the room, periodically glancing at each other. They were obviously attuned to each other,
often mirroring each other`s movements. But the tendency of men to face away can give women the
impression they aren`t listening even when they are.
A young woman in college was frustrated: Whenever she told her boyfriend she wanted to talk to
him, he would lie down on the floor, close his eyes and put his arm over his face. This signaled to her,
``He`s taking a nap.`` But he insisted he was listening extra hard. Normally, he looks around the room,
so he is easily distracted. Lying down and covering his eyes helped him concentrate on what she was
saying.
Analogous to the physical alignment that women and men take in conversation is their topical
alignment. The girls in my study tended to talk at length about one topic, but the boys tended to jump
from topic to topic. The second-grade girls exchanged stories about people they knew. The secondgrade boys teased, told jokes, noticed things in the room and talked about finding games to play. The
sixth-grade girls talked about problems with a mutual friend. The sixth-grade boys talked about 55
different topics, none of which extended over more than a few turns.
LISTENER NOISE
There are even simpler reasons for women`s impression that men don`t listen. Linguist Lynette
Hirschman found that women make more listener-noise, such as ``mhm,`` ``uhuh`` and ``yeah,`` to
show ``I`m with you.`` Men, she found, more often give silent attention. Women who expect a stream
of listener noise interpret silent attention as no attention at all.
Women`s conversational habits are as frustrating to men as men`s are to women. Men who expect silent
attention interpret a stream of listener noise as overreaction or impatience. Also, when women talk to
each other in a close, comfortable setting, they often overlap, finish each other`s sentences and
anticipate what the other is about to say. This practice, which I call ``participatory listenership,`` is
often perceived by men as interruption, intrusion and lack of attention.
A parallel difference caused a man to complain about his wife, ``She just wants to talk about her
own point of view. If I show her another view, she gets mad at me.`` When most women talk to each
other, they assume a conversationalist`s job is to express agreement and support. But many men see
their conversational duty as pointing out the other side of an argument. This is heard as disloyalty by
women, and refusal to offer the requisite support. It is not that women don`t want to see other points
of view, but that they prefer them phrased as suggestions and inquiries rather than as direct challenges.

!

In his book Fighting for Life, Walter Ong points out that men use ``agonistic`` or warlike,
oppositional formats to do almost anything; thus discussion becomes debate and conversation a
competitive sport. In contrast, women see conversation as a ritual means of establishing rapport.
FREEDOM TO TALK
These differences begin to clarify why women and men have such different expectations about
communication in marriage. For women, talk creates intimacy. Marriage is an orgy of closeness: You can
tell your feelings and thoughts, and still be loved. Their greatest fear is being pushed away. But men live
in a hierarchical world, where talk maintains independence and status. They are on guard to protect
themselves from being put down and pushed around.
This explains the paradox of the talkative man who said of his silent wife, ``She`s the talker.`` In the
public setting of a guest lecture, he felt challenged to show his intelligence and display his understanding
of the lecture. But at home, where he has nothing to prove and no one to defend against, he is free to
remain silent. For his wife, being home means she is free from the worry that something she says might
offend someone, or spark disagreement, or appear to be showing off; at home she is free to talk.
The communication problems that endanger marriage can`t be fixed by mechanical engineering.
They require a new conceptual framework about the role of talk in human relationships. Many of the
psychological explanations that have become second nature may not be helpful because they tend to
blame either women (for not being assertive enough) or men (for not being in touch with their feelings).
A sociolinguistic approach by which male-female conversation is seen as cross-cultural communication
allows us to understand the problem and forge solutions without blaming either party.
Once the problem is understood, improvement comes naturally, as it did to the young woman and
her boyfriend who seemed to go to sleep when she wanted to talk. Previously, she had accused him of not
listening, and he had refused to change his behavior, since that would be admitting fault. But then she
learned about and explained to him the differences in womens and men`s habitual ways of aligning
themselves in conversation. The next time she told him she wanted to talk, he began, as usual, by lying
down and covering his eyes. When the familiar negative reaction bubbled up, she reassured herself that
he really was listening. But then he sat up and looked at her. Thrilled, she asked why. He said, ``You like
me to look at you when we talk, so I`ll try to do it.`` Once he saw their differences as cross-cultural
rather than right and wrong, he independently decided to alter his behavior.
Women who feel abandoned and deprived when their husbands won`t listen to or report daily
news, may be happy to discover their husbands trying to adapt once they understand the place of small
talk in women`s relationships. But if their husbands don`t adapt, the women may still be comforted that
for men, this is not a failure of intimacy. Accepting the difference, the wives may look to their friends
or family for that kind of talk. And husbands who can`t provide it shouldn`t feel their wives have made
unreasonable demands. Some couples still will decide to divorce, but at least their decisions will be based
on realistic expectations.
In these times of resurgent ethnic conflicts, the world desperately needs cross-cultural
understanding. Like charity, successful cross-cultural communication should begin!at!home.!

What are the Sixteen Master Archetypes?

The word "archetype" was coined by Carl Jung, who theorized that humans have a collective unconscious, "deposits of
the constantly repeated experiences of humanity.... a kind of readiness to reproduce over and over again the same or
similar mythical ideas...." This shared memory of experiences has resulted in a resonance of the concepts of hero and
heroine that transcends time, place and culture. Jung called these recurring personalities archetypes, from the Greek
word archetypos, meaning first of its kind.
The observations my coauthors and I made are that there are recurring character types who have starred in story after
story, entertaining and informing the human experience for millennia. Review of myths, legends, fairy tales, epic poems,
novels and film reveals that the protagonist types who recur in these stories fall into sixteen distinctive categories, eight
each for the heroes and heroines. These archetypes are not the inventions of my coauthors and me they have existed
for millennia. All we did was name and describe them, and then gather examples from an assortment of cultural media.
At his or her core, every well-defined hero or heroine is one of the respective archetypes. The archetype tells the writer
about the most basic instincts of the hero: how he thinks, how he feels, what drives him and why he chooses both his
goals and his methods. The skillful writer, in turn, conveys these instincts to the readers or audience, who, knowing at a
glance the character of this hero, settles down to watch the tale retold anew.
Archetypes are not stereotypes; they are not cookie cutters. They can be considered a framework, or even better, a lump
of clay of a particular color and consistency. Use the archetype as raw material to create a full bodied character.

!
The CHIEF: a dynamic leader, he has time for nothing but work. He might have been born to lead, or perhaps he
conquered his way to the top, but either way, hes tough, decisive, goal-oriented. That means he is also a bit overbearing
and inflexible. Think William Shatner in Star Trek; Harrison Ford in Sabrina, or Marlon Brando in The Godfather.
The BAD BOY: dangerous to know, he walks on the wild side. This is the rebel, or the boy from the wrong side of the
tracks. Hes bitter and volatile, a crushed idealist, but he's also charismatic and street smart. Think James Dean in Rebel
Without a Cause, Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting, Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing.
The BEST FRIEND: sweet and safe, he never lets anyone down. He's kind, responsible, decent, a regular Mr. Nice Guy.
This man doesn't enjoy confrontation and can sometimes be unassertive because he doesn't want to hurt anyone's
feelings. But he'll always be there. Think Jimmy Stewart in Its a Wonderful Life, Adam Sandler in The Wedding Singer,
Hugh Grant in Four Weddings & a Funeral, Kevin Spacey in American Beauty.
The CHARMER: more than a gigolo, he creates fantasies. Hes fun, irresistible, a smooth operator, yet not too
responsible or dependable. He might be a playboy or a rogue, but he's doesnt commit to a woman easily. Think Leonardo
DiCaprio in Titanic, James Garner/Mel Gibson in Maverick, Don Johnson in Nash Bridges, Dustin Hoffman in Midnight
Cowboy.
The LOST SOUL: a sensitive being, he understands. Tortured, secretive, brooding, and unforgiving. Thats this man. But
he's also vulnerable. He might be a wanderer or an outcast. In work he's creative, but probably also a loner. Think Mel
Gibson in Lethal Weapon, David Duchovny in The X-Files, Beast in Beauty and the Beast, Shrek.
The PROFESSOR: coolly analytical, he knows every answer. Hes logical, introverted, and inflexible, but genuine about
his feelings. At work, he likes cold, hard facts, thank you very much, but he's also honest and faithful, and wont let you
down. Think Leonard Nimoy in Star Trek, Robin Williams in Flubber, Kelsey Gramner in Frasier, Russell Crowe in A
Beautiful Mind.
The SWASHBUCKLER: Mr. Excitement, hes an adventure. This guy is action, action, and more action. He's physical
and daring. Fearless, hes a daredevil, or an explorer. He needs thrills and chills to keep him happy. Think Antonio
Banderas in The Mask of Zorro, Michael Douglas in Romancing the Stone, Harrison Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

! 79!
!

The WARRIOR: a noble champion, he acts with honor. This man is the reluctant rescuer or the knight in shining armor.
He's noble, tenacious, relentless, and he always sticks up for the underdog. If you need a protector, hes your guy. He
doesnt buckle under to rules, or and he doesnt go along just to get along. Think Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry, Russell
Crowe in Gladiator, Mel Gibson in Braveheart.

The BOSS: a real go-getter, she climbs the ladder of success. This is a take charge female, who accepts nothing but
respect. Reaching her goal post the most important thing in life to her, and she isnt bothered by a few ruffled feathers
along the way. Think Annette Bening in American Beauty, Candice Bergen in Murphy Brown, Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth.
The Seductress: an enchantress, she gets her way. This is a lady who is long accustomed to sizing up everyone in a
room the minute she enters. Mysterious and manipulative, she hides a streak of distrust a mile wide and ten miles deep.
Cynicism guides her every action, and her tough sense of survival gives her the means to do whatever is necessary to
come out ahead. Think Liz Taylor in Cleopatra, Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct, Vivian Leigh in Gone With the Wind,
Madonna in Evita.
The SPUNKY KID: gutsy and true, she is loyal to the end. She is a favorite of many writers, and for good reason. You
cant help but root for her. Shes the girl with moxie. Shes not looking to be at the top of the heap; she just wants to be in
her own little niche. Shes the team player, the one who is always ready to lend a hand. Think Meg Ryan in Sleepless in
Seattle, Melanie Griffith in Working Girl, Mary Tyler Moore in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act,
Fiona in Shrek.
The FREE SPIRIT: eternal optimist, she dances to unheard tunes. Playful and fun-loving, she travels through life with a
hop, skip and a jump, always stopping to smell the flowers and admire the pretty colors. She acts on a whim and follows
her heart, not her head. Think Jenna Elfman in Dharma & Greg, Lucille Ball in I Love Lucy, Alicia Silverstone in Clueless.
The WAIF: a distressed damsel, she bends with the wind. Shes the original damsel in distress. Her child-like innocence
evokes a protective urge in the beastliest of heroes. But dont be fooled, because the WAIF has tremendous strength of
will. She wont fight back; shell endure. Think Judy Garland in the Wizard of Oz, Marilyn Monroe in The Misfits, Peta
Wilson in La Femme Nikita, Demi Moore in Ghost, Halle Barry in Monsters Ball.
The LIBRARIAN: controlled and clever, she holds back. Shes prim and proper, but underneath that tight bun lurks a
passionate woman. Dressed to repress, she might be the know-it-all whose hand is always up in class, or maybe she is
the shy mouse hiding in the library. Think Kathleen Turner in Romancing the Stone, Ellen Barkin in The Big Easy, Shelley
Long in Cheers, Gillian Anderson in The X-Files.
The CRUSADER: a dedicated fighter, she meets her commitments. No shrinking violet, no distressed damsel, here. This
lady is on a mission, and she marches right over anyone in her way. Tenacious and headstrong, she brushes off any
opposition to her goal. Think Diana Rigg in The Avengers, Sigourney Weaver in Alien, Sarah Michelle Gellar in Buffy, the
Vampire Slayer, Lucy Lawless in Xena, Warrior Princess.
The NURTURER: serene and capable, she nourishes the spirit. Not always Suzy Homemaker, this lady takes care of
everyone. She is a wonderful listener, and a joy to have around, this heroine takes care of everyone. Shes serene,
capable and optimistic. Think Michelle Pfeiffer in Ladyhawke, Alicia Nash in A Beautiful Mind, Julie Andrews in Mary
Poppins.

"Grand Canyon"
I love my country
By which I mean
I am indebted joyfully
To all the people throughout its history
Who have fought the government to make right
Where so many cunning sons and daughters
Our foremothers and forefathers
Came singing through slaughter
Came through hell and high water
So that we could stand here
And behold breathlessly the sight
How a raging river of tears
Cut a grand canyon of light
Yes, I've been so many places
Flown through vast empty spaces
With stewardesses whose hands
Look much older than their faces
I've tossed so many napkins
Into that big hole in the sky
Been at the bottom of the Atlantic
Seething in a two-ply
Looking up through all that water
And the fishes swimming by
And I don't always feel lucky
But I'm smart enough to try
Cause humility has buoyancy
And above us only sky
So I lean in
Breathe deeper that brutal burning smell
That surrounds the smoldering wreckage
That I've come to love so well
Yes, color me stunned and dazzled
By all the red white and blue flashing lights
In the American intersection
Where black crashed head on with white
Comes a melody
Comes a rhythm
A particular resonance
That is us and only us

Comes a screaming ambulance

A hand that you can trust
Laid steady on your chest
Working for the better good
(Which is good at its best)
And too, bearing witness
Like a woman bears a child...
With all her might
Born of the greatest pain
Into a grand canyon of light
I mean, no song has gone unsung here
And this joint is strung crazy tight
And people been raising up their voices
Since it just ain't been right
With all the righteous rage
And all the bitter spite
That will accompany us out
Of this long night
That will grab us by the hand
When we are ready to take flight
Seatback and tray-table
In the upright and locked position
Shocked to tears by each new vision
Of all that my ancestors have done
Like, say, the women who gave their lives
So that I could have one
People, we are standing at ground zero
Of the feminist revolution
Yeah, it was an inside job
Stoic and sly
One we're supposed to forget
And downplay and deny
But I think the time is nothing
If not nigh
To let the truth out
Coolest f-word ever deserves a fucking shout!
I mean
Why can't all decent men and women
Call themselves feminists?

! 92!
!

Out of respect
For those who fought for this
I mean, look around
We have this
Yes
I love my country
By which I mean
I am indebted joyfully
To all the people throughout its history

Who have fought the government to make right

Where so many cunning sons and daughters
Our foremothers and forefathers
Came singing through slaughter
Came through hell and high water

Men in Our Culture

Objective: To discuss our cultural view of men and how societys definition of them impacts mens
perspectives of themselves.
Essential Questions:
1. What is a man?
2. How are men judged in our culture?
3. Why are men judged the way they are in our culture?
4. In what ways is our culture emasculating?
5. How has this cultural view of men impacted who you are?
What is the voice of the male in our society. Yes it is true that men still make more then women
and that the vast majority of jobs at the top are held by men. Does that mean that men have a voice of
expression? We examined the need for a female voice in the Vagina Monologues. That voice needed to
address all the ways that women are objectified and the ways that they can move beyond that
objectification to a place of empowerment. Do men have a need to discuss their own objectification?
What does it mean to be a man? In what ways do men need to be empowered? Perhaps we should start
more simple. What does it mean to be a little boy? Consider this chart:

How little boys act:

What little boys need:

Things little boys like

annoying noises

love

building toys

touching everything

attention

video games

funny faces

acceptance

sports

running

to care for others

playing with friends

tackling

Now consider the expectations of young children in school: sit still, dont disrupt others, focus on one
boring task where you sit read and write, learn to behave and cooperate with the group
So then is learning to behave and act in a way that is the opposite of who you are part of what it means
to be a little boy?
If this is how a mans life starts out, how does he learn to be a man who is his authentic self?
So far in class we have learned that men are doers. They show their love rather than speak it. They
enjoy doing things with friends rather than sitting around and talking. But what else is a man? Consider
the following poem.

The New Macho

He cleans up after himself.
He cleans up the planet.
He is a role model for young men.
He is rigorously honest and fiercely optimistic.
He holds himself accountable.
He knows what he feels.
He knows how to cry and he lets it go.
! 95!
!

He knows how to rage without hurting others.

He knows how to fear and how to keep moving.
He seeks self-mastery.
Hes let go of childish shame.
He feels guilty when hes done something wrong.
He is kind to men, kind to women, kind to children.
He teaches others how to be kind.
He says hes sorry.
He stopped blaming women or his parents or men for his pain years ago.
He stopped letting his defenses ruin his relationships.
He stopped letting his penis run his life.
He has enough self-respect to tell the truth.
He creates intimacy and trust with his actions.
He has men that he trusts and that he turns to for support.
He knows how to roll with it.
He knows how to make it happen.
He is disciplined when he needs to be.
He is flexible when he needs to be.
He knows how to listen from the core of his being.
Hes not afraid to get dirty.
Hes ready to confront his own limitations.
He has high expectations for himself and for those he connects with.
He looks for ways to serve others.
He knows he is an individual.
He knows that we are all one.
He knows he is an animal and a part of nature.
He knows his spirit and his connection to something greater.
He knows future generations are watching his actions.
He builds communities where people are respected and valued.
He takes responsibility for himself.
In times of need, he will be his brothers keeper.
He knows his higher purpose.
He loves with fierceness.
He laughs with abandon, because he gets the joke.

Adult Children of Alcoholics World Service Organization, Inc.

The Problem
Many of us found that we had several characteristics in common as a result of being brought
up in an alcoholic or dysfunctional household. We had come to feel isolated and uneasy with other
people, especially authority figures. To protect ourselves, we became people-pleasers, even though
we lost our own identities in the process. All the same we would mistake any personal criticism as a
threat. We either became alcoholics (or practiced other addictive behavior) ourselves, or married
them, or both. Failing that, we found other compulsive personalities, such as a workaholic, to fulfill our
sick need for abandonment.
We lived life from the standpoint of victims. Having an overdeveloped sense of responsibility,
we preferred to be concerned with others rather than ourselves. We got guilt feelings when we stood
up for ourselves rather than giving in to others. Thus, we became reactors, rather than actors, letting
others take the initiative. We were dependent personalities, terrified of abandonment, willing to do
almost anything to hold on to a relationship in order not to be abandoned emotionally. Yet we kept
choosing insecure relationships because they matched our childhood relationship with alcoholic or
dysfunctional parents.
These symptoms of the family disease of alcoholism or other dysfunction made us co-victims,
those who take on the characteristics of the disease without necessarily ever taking a drink. We
learned to keep our feelings down as children and kept them buried as adults. As a result of this
conditioning, we confused love with pity, tending to love those we could rescue. Even more selfdefeating, we became addicted to excitement in all our affairs, preferring constant upset to workable
relationships.
This is a description, not an indictment.
Adapted from The Laundry List
The Laundry List 14 Traits of an Adult Child of an Alcoholic
1. We became isolated and afraid of people and authority figures.
2. We became approval seekers and lost our identity in the process.
3. We are frightened of angry people and any personal criticism.
4. We either become alcoholics, marry them or both, or find another compulsive personality such
as a workaholic to fulfill our sick abandonment needs.
5. We live life from the viewpoint of victims and we are attracted by that weakness in our love and
friendship relationships.
6. We have an overdeveloped sense of responsibility and it is easier for us to be concerned with
others rather than ourselves; this enables us not to look too closely at our own faults, etc.
7. We get guilt feelings when we stand up for ourselves instead of giving in to others.
8. We became addicted to excitement.
9. We confuse love and pity and tend to "love" people we can "pity" and "rescue."
10. We have "stuffed" our feelings from our traumatic childhoods and have lost the ability to feel or
express our feelings because it hurts so much (Denial).
11. We judge ourselves harshly and have a very low sense of self-esteem.
12. We are dependent personalities who are terrified of abandonment and will do anything to hold
on to a relationship in order not to experience painful abandonment feelings, which we
received from living with sick people who were never there emotionally for us.
13. Alcoholism is a family disease; and we became para-alcoholics and took on the characteristics
of that disease even though we did not pick up the drink.
14. Para-alcoholics are reactors rather than actors.

Thoughts and quotes to ponder:

Knowing others is intelligence;
Knowing yourself is true wisdom.
Mastering others is strength;
Mastering yourself is true power.
-- The Tao Te Ching
The Buddha said his message would be distorted in 1,000 years and if women were allowed to join the
sangha 500 years. Though the patriarchal nature of this statement is frustrating, there is another
question that arises out of this statement. Why will the message become distorted?
