Since the TWG was composed of para-medical personnel, they easily infused ideas
that were relevant to the end-users (patients, co-workers and colleagues). There were
moments of disparity and incongruency during the filming process but dissipated
easily by laughter and sincere affinity to the desire to finish Boy Dungis. Perhaps,
finding the appropriate time was difficult for almost all of the characters since they
have to find time from their 24-hour duty and 8 hour-shift. The logistic concern was
another set-back but through the collaborative efforts, the short film was finished in 5
working days plus one day for editing.
Acknowlegement was due to the following: Mr Ramon Victor Madrid, as the main
character; Mr. Rodfel Carlo Silva, Mr. Bryan Bigornia and Mr. Magno Elento, Jr. as
supporting casts and to Mr. Justin Jubby Joseph Castro, for his expertise and talent in
directing the story. Also to mention was the script writer, Mr. Margol Sapnu who spent
hours formulating thoughts into words.
As what was constantly heard from Director Jubby: Let us have the AVR rolling
and watch our masterpiece, Boy Dungis. Kudos, to a job well done!
As part of the Hand Hygiene Awareness Campaign Program set forth by Infection
Prevention and Control Committee of the institution, the involvement of the three (3)
schools within the hospitals perimetry namely Jose Abad Santos High School, Rajah
Sulayman Science and Technology High School and Pedro Guevarra Elementary School
was tapped. The participation of these schools with the community programs of the
hospital became the fulfillment of the true essence of Public Health. The
community participation and linkages with Non-Government Organization (NGO) like
the Rotary Club of Chinatown Manila and Federation of the Filipion Chinese Chambers
of Commerce Industries Inc. (FFCCCII) fully shown that JJASGH maximized its
opportunity to be part of the bigger sphere. Making them part of these campaign, the
institution confidently spearheaded the community-wide and school- based activities
with enthusiasm and hope.
The approach on how to effectively transmit the technical know-how and the theme:
Kamay ay Hugasan para Sakit ay Maiwasan to different target groups was a
challenge to the organizers. Hence, the manner of delivery, the approach and the
methodology will vary depending on the age group and the level of literacy and
maturity. The high school students do have different needs and issues compared to the
Grade 1 students. That in itself was a tough challenge to be hurdled by the organizers.
Thus, it was decided that all schools will receive a short information campaign on
Hand Hygiene, to be followed by an Audio-Video Presentation (AVP) on handwashing
then reinforced by an actual demonstration and validated by a return-demonstration
by the students. Several mobile sinks and lavatories were installed to properly show
the technique. To fully inculcate its importance, a short story featuring Boy Dungis as
highlighted in DUNGIS was shown. Different reactions were observed but the overall impact was a self examination or n introspection for everyone to respond.
For the high-school students, the On-the-Spot poster making contest was conducted
simultaneously with the lecture proper. Contestants were pre-selected and identified,
also the mechanics of the contest were distributed a week prior to the date of the
actual contest. Their art work should revolve around the theme Kamay ay Hugasan
para Sakit ay Maiwasan. for all high school students. The art materials were
provided in the actual contest. There were __number of contestants _ and
____contestants from Jose Abad Santos High School and Rajah Solayman Science and
Technology High School respectively.
Deemed more challenging was how to hold the attention of the seven hundred (700)
Grade 1 students of Pedro Guevarra Elementary School. Such, the participation of the
puppeteers from the Manila City Library was tapped. As a result, these children
immediately reacted and became enthusiastic to listen to the demonstration and
importance of handwashing. To further entice them, educational toys were handed to
those who can demonstrate the technique of proper handwashing.
As the art work, the masterpieces were judged on September 1, 2015, the winners
received PHP 3000, PHP 2000 and PHP 1000 for the first, second and third prize
category respectively. The winners were accorded recognition as they received
citation from the hospital. The monetary rewards were through the generosity of Ms.
Susana de Jesus, president of the Rotary Club of Chinatown Manila. Other give-aways
were distributed through the efforts of the Federation of the Filipino Chinese Chambers
of Commerce Industry Inc. (FFCCCII) and the Rotary Club of Chinatown Manila. The
winners from Jose Abad Santos High are:
, , , while those from Rajah
Solaiman Science and Technology High School are: , , ,
A small token was given to all participants including the non-winners. They were
motivated by Mr. Margol Sapnu, Contest Coordinator, to continuously hone and
practice their craft since this activity will have its Part 2 next year. He added: Be
creative, innovative and above all learn to accept defeat.
JJASGH stood together and united with the thousands of health care facilities around
the world in the promotion of Hand Hygiene for patient and health care worker safety.
This support to WHOs quest was through the film clip on #safeHands involving all
care providers and hospital staff in all areas of the hospital. It was initially shown at
the OPD area to initiate and build curiosity among our patients. The film clip showing
was followed by a call to action through a voice over instruction to patients and staff.
The call to action signified their involvement and commitment to the practice on
proper hand washing. The hospital staff volunteers better known as Hand Hygiene
Warriors manned their respective areas to show the correct technique of cleaning
ones hands. The warriors were expected to facilitate and assist others for a return
demonstration. The team started on the first floor, at OPD then moved to the different
wards and special units of the hospital. All hospital staff including the patients and
relatives were encouraged to perform hand hygiene during that time. The
administrative staff, security, and housekeeping were not exempted from the said
maneuver. They were expected to return the demonstration correctly as they would be
the future Hygiene Warriors in the next said activity.
This experience and breakthoughs were documented by photos, selfies and group
pictures with every staff holding #safeHands, a WHO promotional board. All these
achievements were posted via social media channels with a pledge: making HAND
HYGIENE a priority. <><><>

As part of our goal in promoting proper hand hygiene, a portable working lavatory/sink
was created. The brilliant idea came from the management and it was initially
executed by Mr. Nicanor Jun Aguilar, the biomed expert of the hospital. Later, Mr.
Ronald Salandanan, another employee under the Maintenance Section of the hospital
adapted and improved the design of the mobile lavatory.
The lavatory was designed to be transferable, portable and complete with provisions
for soap, faucet and pipes for the waste water. One mobile lavatory was placed athe
the door beside the ER which was later moved to the decontamination area of the
hospital. Mr. Salandanans effort and support to the IPPC program was shown in his
determination to create six (6) more portable lavatories. It was not only because of his
inguiniety but sincere dedication to his work that made him one of the recipient of
Outstanding Employee Award of the City of Manila during 444th Founding Anniversary.
The said portable lavatory / sink were used during the Hand Washing Awareness
Campaign in the hospital, school and community. The actual return demonstrations
were done using these portable lavatories or sinks.
The ceramic lavatory (American Standards) and piping were all donation from the past
president of Rotary Club Chinatown Manila, Mr. Andrew Co. The other materials came
as support from the benefactors of the hospital.
Thank you Sir Ronald. Good Job!
Hand Hygiene Warrior was created and designed to address the clamor for
superheroes in our lives. The Committee believed that to align the advocacy using a
super-hero-like character will help them sell the idea. It could be called as a marketing
strategy. But truly it was, as it stimulated laugher and brought light feeling seeing one
of the hospital staff, Mr. Honorio Borjocan dressed as a Hand Hygiene Warrior. With his
sword he directed the other warriors to teach and transfer the new learning to others
to the different areas and more.
The presence of the Hand Hygiene Warrior in our daily activity signified that nothing is
impossible with corroborative effort and determination. Once equipped with strategy,
the warrior in us can make the difference in someones life either by hand hygiene or
something else!
