DUNGIS

A Hand Hygiene Awareness Short Film

by Margol Sapnu
The Technical Working Group (TWG) of JJASGH Infection Prevention and Control
Committee was tasked by Dr. Ryan B. Capitulo, Chief of Clinics and Nerissa Isabelle
Sescon, Chairman of the Infection Prevention and Control Committee to create an
entertaining and informative AUDIO-VISUAL PRESENTATION that would depict the
benefits of proper hand hygiene and also showcase the proper steps in doing hand
hygiene either by using hand rubbing or hand washing method. The hand rubbing
method uses alcohol-based hand sanitizer while hand washing method utilizes soap
and water. As didactic lectures and hand washing demonstrations were the modality
used in the past years, the presence of an AVR would create lasting and creative
means to reach-out to many about the hospital advocacy--- to promote proper hand
hygiene practices all the time.
The result of the tumultous brainstorming meeting led the Technical Working Group to
present a short story via Audio-Visual Presentation. The story plot centered on the
struggles of Boy Dungis who was beset with many concernseconomic, health and
environmental. It was filmed in a real scenario where the characters live amidst
poverty in a depressed barangay of Distict III, Manila. As Boy Dungis tried to make his
living as mangangalakal or scavenger...he was so occupied with his plight that
health and sanitation issues relatively became secondary. He tried to focu his effort to
earn his living neglecting the importance of hygiene. He ended up in the hospital bed
to be confined as a case of Gastroenteritis with Dehydration. Electrolyte imbalances
became apparent due to severe dehydration from intractable diarrhea, that made Boy
Dungis delirious. He had an encounter with the Angel and Demon. These two
characters wrestled and fought to get Boy Dungis attention; he being severely
dehydrated led him to be revived as code blue was declared. The story had its twist
when Boy Dungis woke up from his nightmare. To his realization, Boy Dungis was also
Dr. Boy Madrid, a physician in a reputable institution who wished to propagate the
Hand Washing Techniques to every staff of the hospital and to the community as well.
As the story progressed, Dr. Boy and the other characters in the story were ordinary
people whom he was interacting with in his niche; the Angel was a barangay tanod
while the Demon was the pasaway na kanto boy in the Barangay.
The concept of the story was based on the complacency of any individual
(characterized as Boy Dungis) who consciously neglected or forgot to practice proper
hand hygiene. To some, this practice seemed trivial and significantly of little value.
Thus buried into oblivion and only remembered when it became necessary. As a
result, an increasing incidence of fecal-oral diseases and water-borne illnesses were
seen among children and even adults. The statistics of dehydration secondary to
diarrhea became an alarming cause of mortality. What was seemingly preventable
turned out to be an out-of-bound reality that caused loss of lives and even resources.
To be awakened from such dismal consequences, a certain twist was infused into the
concept by entertaining the viewers and making them aware of the importance of
handwashing in a less structured format.

Since the TWG was composed of para-medical personnel, they easily infused ideas
that were relevant to the end-users (patients, co-workers and colleagues). There were
moments of disparity and incongruency during the filming process but dissipated
easily by laughter and sincere affinity to the desire to finish Boy Dungis. Perhaps,
finding the appropriate time was difficult for almost all of the characters since they
have to find time from their 24-hour duty and 8 hour-shift. The logistic concern was
another set-back but through the collaborative efforts, the short film was finished in 5
working days plus one day for editing.
Acknowlegement was due to the following: Mr Ramon Victor Madrid, as the main
character; Mr. Rodfel Carlo Silva, Mr. Bryan Bigornia and Mr. Magno Elento, Jr. as
supporting casts and to Mr. Justin Jubby Joseph Castro, for his expertise and talent in
directing the story. Also to mention was the script writer, Mr. Margol Sapnu who spent
hours formulating thoughts into words.
As what was constantly heard from Director Jubby: Let us have the AVR rolling
and watch our masterpiece, Boy Dungis. Kudos, to a job well done!

Hand Hygiene Button Pin

By: Hydee Siebelle Lu
Naghugas na ba Ako ng Kamay? (Have I washed my hands already?)...is a short,
simple and yet a very meaningful reminder to all Healthcare Workers to practice Hand
Hygiene before and every after patient contact.
The Infection Prevention and Control Committee members agree to use this statement
as the design of the button pin. The use of button pin is a very common method in
promoting and inculcating awareness.
Moreover, the committee envisions that all hospital staff from the three (3) divisions
(Medical & Ancillary, Nursing Division and Administrative Division) will wear the pin as
part of the uniform. Its usage will strongly reinforce a positive behavior, the best
practice in hand washing. This can be an effective way to immortalize the advocacy
on proper handwashing. To be constantly reminded is also another means to imbibe
the message and to live by it.
The message shared and printed on the pin was distributed to all stakeholders
including the barangay officials and their personnel. The Grade 1 students from Pedro
Guevarra Elementary School, the Grade 7 students from Jose Abad Santos High School
and Raja Sulayman Science and Technology High School proudly wore it with their IDs.
This small pin made our message evidently visible and true. What a breakthrough....

Hand Hygiene ON-THE-SPOT Poster Making Contest

By: Margol P. Sapnu

As part of the Hand Hygiene Awareness Campaign Program set forth by Infection
Prevention and Control Committee of the institution, the involvement of the three (3)
schools within the hospitals perimetry namely Jose Abad Santos High School, Rajah
Sulayman Science and Technology High School and Pedro Guevarra Elementary School
was tapped. The participation of these schools with the community programs of the
hospital became the fulfillment of the true essence of Public Health. The
community participation and linkages with Non-Government Organization (NGO) like
the Rotary Club of Chinatown Manila and Federation of the Filipion Chinese Chambers
of Commerce Industries Inc. (FFCCCII) fully shown that JJASGH maximized its
opportunity to be part of the bigger sphere. Making them part of these campaign, the
institution confidently spearheaded the community-wide and school- based activities
with enthusiasm and hope.
The approach on how to effectively transmit the technical know-how and the theme:
Kamay ay Hugasan para Sakit ay Maiwasan to different target groups was a
challenge to the organizers. Hence, the manner of delivery, the approach and the
methodology will vary depending on the age group and the level of literacy and
maturity. The high school students do have different needs and issues compared to the
Grade 1 students. That in itself was a tough challenge to be hurdled by the organizers.
Thus, it was decided that all schools will receive a short information campaign on
Hand Hygiene, to be followed by an Audio-Video Presentation (AVP) on handwashing
then reinforced by an actual demonstration and validated by a return-demonstration
by the students. Several mobile sinks and lavatories were installed to properly show
the technique. To fully inculcate its importance, a short story featuring Boy Dungis as
highlighted in DUNGIS was shown. Different reactions were observed but the overall impact was a self examination or n introspection for everyone to respond.
For the high-school students, the On-the-Spot poster making contest was conducted
simultaneously with the lecture proper. Contestants were pre-selected and identified,
also the mechanics of the contest were distributed a week prior to the date of the
actual contest. Their art work should revolve around the theme Kamay ay Hugasan
para Sakit ay Maiwasan. for all high school students. The art materials were
provided in the actual contest. There were __number of contestants _ and
____contestants from Jose Abad Santos High School and Rajah Solayman Science and
Technology High School respectively.
Deemed more challenging was how to hold the attention of the seven hundred (700)
Grade 1 students of Pedro Guevarra Elementary School. Such, the participation of the
puppeteers from the Manila City Library was tapped. As a result, these children
immediately reacted and became enthusiastic to listen to the demonstration and
importance of handwashing. To further entice them, educational toys were handed to
those who can demonstrate the technique of proper handwashing.
As the art work, the masterpieces were judged on September 1, 2015, the winners
received PHP 3000, PHP 2000 and PHP 1000 for the first, second and third prize
category respectively. The winners were accorded recognition as they received
citation from the hospital. The monetary rewards were through the generosity of Ms.
Susana de Jesus, president of the Rotary Club of Chinatown Manila. Other give-aways
were distributed through the efforts of the Federation of the Filipino Chinese Chambers

of Commerce Industry Inc. (FFCCCII) and the Rotary Club of Chinatown Manila. The
winners from Jose Abad Santos High are:
, , , while those from Rajah
Solaiman Science and Technology High School are: , , ,
A small token was given to all participants including the non-winners. They were
motivated by Mr. Margol Sapnu, Contest Coordinator, to continuously hone and
practice their craft since this activity will have its Part 2 next year. He added: Be
creative, innovative and above all learn to accept defeat.

Hand Hygiene Brochure

By: Magno S. Elento Jr.
Coming up with informational campaign materials like the creation of Hand Hygiene
Brochure was one of the major goals of Infection Prevention and Control Committee
(IPPC). This step would further promote the advocacy by increasing the compliance to
proper hand hygiene. The technical working group of IPCC started gathering all the
vital information needed to be part of the brochure. The Hand Hygiene brochure would
emphasize the benefits of practicing proper hand hygiene. Moreover, it highlighted the
techniques recommended by the World Health Organization in doing hand washing
and hand rubbing. Its creation would mean another milestone for the IPPC to be proud
of. For easy comprehension and understanding, the Filipino language was chosen as a
medium of communication. The lay-out was designed to attract children and the
younger adults.
The production of the brochure was made possible through the efforts of the
Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. (FFCCCII), the
Rotary Club of Chinatown Manila and the Barangays of District III, Manila. And finally,
the full support of the hospital management made this seemingly impossible step truly
feasible and doable. To all contributors and fellow co-authors of the Hand Hygiene
Brochure, Hooray! VIVA JJASGH!

JJASGH Celebrates World Hand Hygiene Day

By Diane E. Madrid
The Hand Hygiene Campaign at Justice Jose Abad Santos General Hospital begun
several years back but the formal launching was held last Wednesday May 5, 2015.
The launching coincided with the celebration of the World Health Organization (WHO)
theme: Save Lives: Clean your Hands. The IPPC chose to be identical with the quest
of WHO and the challenge emanating from it. The challenge is for all healthcare
workers and the public to observe World Hygiene Day. Thus, this campaign raised the
level of awareness on proper hand hygiene. This was a reminder to all, that germs are
primarily transmitted by our hands and proper hand hygiene can be enormously
effective in preventing and spreading infectious diseases. Proper hand washing can
decrease the propagation of common illness like colds, cough, flu, respiratory
infections and gastroenteritis.

JJASGH stood together and united with the thousands of health care facilities around
the world in the promotion of Hand Hygiene for patient and health care worker safety.
This support to WHOs quest was through the film clip on #safeHands involving all
care providers and hospital staff in all areas of the hospital. It was initially shown at
the OPD area to initiate and build curiosity among our patients. The film clip showing
was followed by a call to action through a voice over instruction to patients and staff.
The call to action signified their involvement and commitment to the practice on
proper hand washing. The hospital staff volunteers better known as Hand Hygiene
Warriors manned their respective areas to show the correct technique of cleaning
ones hands. The warriors were expected to facilitate and assist others for a return
demonstration. The team started on the first floor, at OPD then moved to the different
wards and special units of the hospital. All hospital staff including the patients and
relatives were encouraged to perform hand hygiene during that time. The
administrative staff, security, and housekeeping were not exempted from the said
maneuver. They were expected to return the demonstration correctly as they would be
the future Hygiene Warriors in the next said activity.
This experience and breakthoughs were documented by photos, selfies and group
pictures with every staff holding #safeHands, a WHO promotional board. All these
achievements were posted via social media channels with a pledge: making HAND
HYGIENE a priority. <><><>

Hand Hygiene Awareness Seminar to Barangays of The Third District of

Manila
By: Ma. Corazon DR Catoy RSW, MGM
Conducting any activity that involves the community is an awesome responsibility!
The mandate of the leaders and the management of JJASGH is to involve the
community in the hand hygiene awareness campaign. Such is a huge task. However,
there was an assurance that came from the previous records shown by the successful
involment in the Zumba Manila last April and the Medical Mission last June.
Thus, on August 7, 2015, twenty seven(27) barangay chairmen from District III visited
the hospital and expressed commitment to be part of the advocacy towards hand
hygiene. They commit themselves to support the campaign by providing some
logistics necessary for the production of the brochures, the printing of the pin and the
cost of the towellete and soap. Their generosity was overwhelming that cartoons of
soap and bundles of towels arrived in short notice. Also, they promised to witness the
actual program set for August 27, 2015 in the three schools within the hospitals
vicinity.
Finally, they came as expected to join the program in the schools and to sign the
Commitment or the Manifesto on Proper Hand Hygiene either at Jose Abad Santos high
School or at Pedro Guevarra Elementary School. Their commitment has been
expressed in deeds and words. Truly, the 27 chairmen knew how to walk their talk.

Portable Lavatory / Sink

By: Hydee Siebelle Lu

As part of our goal in promoting proper hand hygiene, a portable working lavatory/sink
was created. The brilliant idea came from the management and it was initially
executed by Mr. Nicanor Jun Aguilar, the biomed expert of the hospital. Later, Mr.
Ronald Salandanan, another employee under the Maintenance Section of the hospital
adapted and improved the design of the mobile lavatory.
The lavatory was designed to be transferable, portable and complete with provisions
for soap, faucet and pipes for the waste water. One mobile lavatory was placed athe
the door beside the ER which was later moved to the decontamination area of the
hospital. Mr. Salandanans effort and support to the IPPC program was shown in his
determination to create six (6) more portable lavatories. It was not only because of his
inguiniety but sincere dedication to his work that made him one of the recipient of
Outstanding Employee Award of the City of Manila during 444th Founding Anniversary.
The said portable lavatory / sink were used during the Hand Washing Awareness
Campaign in the hospital, school and community. The actual return demonstrations
were done using these portable lavatories or sinks.
The ceramic lavatory (American Standards) and piping were all donation from the past
president of Rotary Club Chinatown Manila, Mr. Andrew Co. The other materials came
as support from the benefactors of the hospital.
Thank you Sir Ronald. Good Job!

Hand Hygiene Warrior

By : Dianne Madrid

Hand Hygiene Warrior was created and designed to address the clamor for
superheroes in our lives. The Committee believed that to align the advocacy using a
super-hero-like character will help them sell the idea. It could be called as a marketing
strategy. But truly it was, as it stimulated laugher and brought light feeling seeing one
of the hospital staff, Mr. Honorio Borjocan dressed as a Hand Hygiene Warrior. With his
sword he directed the other warriors to teach and transfer the new learning to others
to the different areas and more.
The presence of the Hand Hygiene Warrior in our daily activity signified that nothing is
impossible with corroborative effort and determination. Once equipped with strategy,
the warrior in us can make the difference in someones life either by hand hygiene or
something else!

HAND HYGIENE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN TO SCHOOLS

By: Nerissa Isabel C. Sescon, MD, FPCP
World Health Organization emphasized on the importance of hand hygiene and
launched guidelines and tools, based on patient safety work programme SAVE LIVES:
Clean your Hands. This programme has highlighted the 5 Moments for Hand
Hygiene, an vital approach to protect patients, health care workers and the
healthcare environment against the spread of germs and thus, reduced health care
associated infections.
In line with this, the JJASGH through the initiative of the Infection Prevention and
Control Committee (IPPC) extended their target group involving the vulnerable age
group---school children and young adolescents. The campaign would include the
schools in the community so that learning can be started and reinforced early in life.
This would include the schools in the neighborhood namely Jose Abad Santos High
School, Pedro Guevarra Elementary School, and Rajah Solayman Science and
Technology High School.
Its main objective is to teach children, teachers and school staff on the importance of
hand hygiene in reducing illness such as diarrhea, respiratory illness and other
infectious diseases such as conjunctivitis, typhoid among others. Teaching or training
the trainors on the proper way of hand hygiene (When and How should it be done) will
empower them as stewards. They would effectively share this concept to their
students, co-workes and colleagues. Tapping the potentials of teachers as dissiminator
or vectors of change would be an effective modality to create Hand Hygiene Warriors
in the classrooms. They were encouraged to be involved as their principals namely Mrs
Imelda Mendez,_____,_____, attested their willingness to continue and monitor the
impact of the campaign. They believed in the hospitals advocacy and would like to
participate in other health related activities in the future.
There were about 755 students from Justice Jose Abad Santos High School, 652
students from Pedro Guevarra Elementary School, and 951 students from Rajah
Sulayman Science and Technology High School respectively. A total of 2,358 student
participants from these three schools got the chance to be involved in our Hand
Hygiene Campaign and benefitted from the interaction, exposures from the IEC
materials including the short film Boy Dungis. They got the chance to relate the
reality with the short film
What a day to reckon!
