1.a. United Nation Convention on the Rights of the Child
Many member-countries of the United Nation (UN) have an agreement
called the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Article 24 of the agreement
says:
Children have a right to good quality health care - the best
health care possible - to safe drinking water, nutritious food, a clean
and safe environment, and information to help them stay healthy.
Rich countries should help poorer countries achieve this.
The article tells that children from all over the world
have the right to good quality health care, including
nutrition. This means that you must be able to get the
important nutrients needed by your body. This means also
that you must be able to eat different kinds of food that will
supply your body the needed nutrients.
The Philippines is a member of the United Nation
(UN). Our government makes sure that Filipino children eat the right amount of
nutritious food. It makes sure that there is available food in the market. There are
feeding programs to help the school children get the needed nutrients to grow
healthy.
The food you eat gives different nutrients to your body. To grow healthy,
you must eat food from the different food groups. What are the different food
groups?

Go Foods
Go foods are energy-giving foods. They provide
carbohydrates for your body.
Carbohydrates give you energy to work and play. Foods
that are good sources of energy include rice, bread, corn,
pasta, and root crops like potatoes, camote and cassava.
A child like you who is physically active uses up a lot energy
each day. Your body breaks down the food to produce energy.
Think of the different activities that you do from morning until nighttime. You
walk, dance, sing, jump, play and many more.

Grow Foods
Grow foods are body-regulating foods. Grow
foods provides protein that is needed by your body.
The nutrient protein promotes growth and bodybuilding. It helps build your bones and muscles. Foods
like eggs, meat, fish, milk, and other dairy products
belong to this food group. Other sources of grow are
nuts, beans, and soya products.
Glow Foods
Glow foods are body-regulating foods.
Glow foods provides vitamins and minerals. They
are needed for the health of your immune system.
Your immune system protects your body against
diseases and other infections. Vitamins and
minerals promotes healing of injuries. They also
assist in the process of digestion. Some glow
foods are rich in healthy skin, nails, and hair. Fruits
and green-leafy vegetables are good sources of potassium, vitamin C and folate.
Vitamin C helps heal your cuts and wounds. They also keep your teeth and gums
healthy. Folate helps produce your red blood cells.
Importance of Healthful Food to the Body
Healthful foods are good food. They provide your body with the needed
nutrients. They make you healthy and strong. They give you energy to work and
play. Eating the right kind and right amount of healthful foods keeps you away
from diseases. It is important that you eat healthful foods to grow healthy.
Chronic diseases like diabetes, heart diseases, cancer, and obesity can be
avoided later in life.

What is a balanced meal?


A balanced meal is one which contains a healthy variety of foods from the
different food groups. It provides your body proteins, vitamins and minerals, and
fibers.
It is important that you are able to eat a balanced meal. In this manner, you
get enough supply of nutrients that you need from the food you eat.
What is a balanced diet?
A balanced diet is a daily diet that gives your body the nutrients it needs to
function properly. Nutrients are substances in food the make you grow. In order to
get a balanced diet, you must eat the right amount of food from each food group.
It may include three meals that together provide or the recommended daily
servings from each food group every day. The nutrients provided by each food
group have specific functions in your body. They provide energy to your body.
Why a Balanced Diet Is Important?
Your body organs and tissues need proper nutrition to function properly. If
you eat a variety of healthy food, you will grow well and stay healthy. If you are
not properly nourished, you are more likely to get sick. You may easily get tired,
slow to respond, and even your performance in school is affected. You have a
high risk of being malnourished. It is important that you have a balanced diet
daily to avoid being undernourished or over nourished.
The following are the parts of a balanced diet.
1. Fruits are great sources of vitamins and minerals. These foods help in
maintaining your immune system strong. Your immune system protects your
body from diseases and infections.
2. Vegetables are also sources of vitamins and minerals. Dark leafy vegetables
like broccoli, spinach, pechay, and kangkong are very good sources of these
nutrients. They also provide fiber necessary for your body to work properly.
3. Grains and grain products like bread, cereal, and oatmeal makes you go.
These foods gives you energy to work and play. They make you active and do
many things.
4. Meat, fish, poultry, and beans are good sources of proteins.

5. Dairy products like milk, cheese and yogurt give you vitamin D, calcium, and
other important nutrients. They make your teeth and bones healthy and
strong.
6. Fats are type of nutrients that give energy and help your body absorb
vitamins. You need some fats in your diet but not too much. Too much fat
can make you overweight. It may also lead to many diseases like heart
ailments.

In order to achieve a
balanced diet, the Food and
Nutrition Research Institute
(FNRI) of the Department of
Science and Technology
(DOST) created a guide to a
good meal plan. This is
called Food Pyramid or
Daily
Nutrition
Guide
Pyramid. It is a pyramidshaped guide for good
nutrition. It is divided into
different sections which show
the recommended food and
amounts of serving for each
food group

What information can you get from the food pyramid?


The Food Pyramid for Filipino Children aged 7-12 years old is specifically
created for you. It can help you check whether you are eating a balanced diet or
not. Try to check your food intake with the recommended kind and servings of
food in the pyramid.
The Food Pyramid or The Daily Nutrition Guide Pyramid for Filipino
Children (7-12 years old) shows the kind and number of servings of food that a
child should consume every day.

The Food Plate for Filipino Children


The food pyramid helps you in choosing the
right kind and amount of food for you. Another
guide to achieve good nutrition is the Food Plate
for Filipino Children. This food plate encourages
you to make healthier food choices. In this food
guide, it is recommended that you consume more
than half of your plate filled with grains and
vegetables. The smaller half of your plate should
be filled with protein and fruits. You also have to
drink milk every day. Drinking 6 to 8 glasses of
water is highly encourages for better digestion.
You can also try planning your own meal by using the food pyramid.
Remember, you have the right to good nutrition. Plan well and eat well to become
healthy.
Try your skills in making healthful food choices. Draw a balanced meal on
