Chelsea Manzanares

ENGL 1010
Jory
22 June 2016

Personally, I believe my best self is constantly under construction. However, there are
certainly attributes of my best self that are already being refined enough to make a difference in
others lives. I sent out reflection surveys to many of my close friends and family. The feedback
I received was astounding. I analyzed a few common themes I found and discussed their impact
as a result of this project in following:

At my best, I inspire. I enjoy supporting and encouraging those around me. I dedicate
myself to my loved ones goals, almost as if they are my own. My best self could not be
complete without seeing others achieve their full potential as well. I had the absolute honor to
assist in my boyfriends life long dream at attending college. As an undocumented student, he did
not believe higher education could ever be a possibility. In his response, he details how I was
able to not only assist him in his college entrance but I also was able to steer him towards a job,
and an ongoing career path. Chelsea motivated me and pushed me into believing it was possible
for me to get where I want to be and with her help I was able to determine which career I wanted
to pursue (Lopez, Jose). Additionally, my parents were also able to give some input on my
encouraging demeanor. They described their perceptions of this specific personal trait through
the impacts Ive made within my family. Her positive outlook, cheerful demeanor and
perseverance passed along a "can do" mentality to not only our other children but also to us as

parents. She's a prime example of a role model to family, classmates and friends (Mondragon,
Ricardo). Chelsea has always encouraged and been a big role model in all her siblings lives
Her dedication and drive has influenced and helped her family tremendously. She truly is the
most driven person I've ever known, my daughter (Mondragon, Trudy).
Moreover, my best self reflects selflessness. Putting others before me is an action that has
come naturally to me. Helping people is truly my passion. I would lay down my life for a person
in need. My boyfriend explains this characteristic perfectly, She will never say no to anyone
who needs her help, she is always willing to go the extra mile for you even if she doesnt get
anything back in return. She will put her friends and loved ones before her no matter what. Acts
of selflessness are not easy. The outcome has always been worth it to me. Even on my worst
days, it is commentary like this that keeps me going.
At my best, I exhibit compassion and love. One tends to forget the impact they make on
others. My life is meaningful, to all of those around me. I make a difference, even in the smallest
gestures. The world would not be the same if I were not here, if I did not strive to achieve the
best version of myself. Even on a planet filled with seven billion people, my personal goals
actually hold great meaning.
The most challenging aspect of this portrait was reflecting on myself. I am truly my biggest
critic. I am the eldest of six siblings, and have always had the pressure of being an adequate role
model for them. I tend to meticulously critique and dissect myself. Sitting myself down to reflect
on scenarios where I believe I am at my best was hair pulling. I never wish to sound boastful,
and I do not find much of my actions extraordinary. I had to really put some effort into writing
about situations I deemed fit to disclose for this assignment. I still almost feel as though they are
somewhat inadequate. Upon reading my responses though, my attitude has shifted some what.

There are people close to me who think the world of me, and their responses really reflected that.
Even the smallest acts of kindness can make the biggest impact on the lives around of me. As
hard as it is to change, I truly do need to implement more self love and admiration into my life.

Additionally, my portrait was interesting to analyze against my everyday life. I am an

incredibly independent person. I live on my own, and work and attend school full time. Most of
my time is spent adulting. I have a hard time squeezing in activities I enjoy, but I always make
time for people I love. I feel like that sense of responsibility paired with the moments I spare for
those close to me corresponds a lot with the feedback I got. I enjoy helping others, and it reflects
in many of the scenarios my peers chose to use. Moreover, there is certainly always room for
improvement. I feel I could benefit from prioritizing time to help those out of my usual circle.
Choosing to expand my social horizons and releasing my best attributes out into the world would
maximize my best self. I could improve and refine many of my people skills by taking me out of
my comfort zone. Implementing this change could prove to be a challenge in itself, but it is
definitely a small goal I am dedicated to set my mind to.

Before this self portrait assignment, I was toying with the thought of going to Nursing
School after completing my first Bachelors of Science in Ethnic Studies. Its my dream to travel
as a licensed and registered nurse, in pure servitude of people all around the world. I want to
serve a selfless purpose, and give my knowledge and education to people who need me. I was
previously unsure if I have any of the skills to be able to achieve such high aspirations. There are
too many times where I doubt myself. My perfectionist attitude is sometimes my greatest
weakness. However, this project opened my self critical eyes to things I was previously blind to.

Brilliant, driven, strong, passionate, caring, intelligent, inspiring, attentive; all vivid adjectives I
never even thought to tie to my name were used by my peers. My responses not only warmed my
heart, but also collectively reinforced my dreams. Stepping out of my comfort zone is a goal I
know I can attain. I know myself, and I know my heart. The love I have for people, and for
making a difference in peoples lives is so immense. Getting through these tough classes, and
graduating college is just the first step. My motivation is currently sky high. I know I have the
determination, skills, and passion to achieve anything. My future is truly mine to behold. I just
needed the confidence to drive me.
