WHAT'S HAPPENING I
Since this is our first newsletter, we feel that we need to let you know what is
happening. We haven't really been in as close of communication as we should have, euid
we apologize for this.
Starting last fall, I was making various speaking dates with the Schools of Missions
as a substitute for someone who couldn't participate at the last minute, I really
enjoyed that time, and grew exceedingly from it.
Then "I" became "WE" when Rosalind and I were married in Phoenix, Arizonia on Nov, 27,
1976, Being married has been a real blessing to mea joy that has caused me to love
Christ more. The knowledge that it will be easier to serve Christ as a couple than as
an individual has really come to mean a lot more.
Throughout the winter and spring months we have gone on various speaking dates all
the way from Annacortes, Washington to Newport, Oregon, where we are now attending
Church. Some of the more exciting ones included a trip to Puget Sound College of the
Bibla__a week-at Vacation Bible School in Newport.,-and a-week at Wi-NcrMa in the 1st
Jr. High Camp of the summer. We see the possibility of many future missionaries arising
from these engagements.
For the financial aspect of the time we have spentwell, the picture is far from
good. We have recieved several offerings, but little increased regular support, (You
can see a report of our financial status elsewhere in this newsletter,) We have not
been living on Mission funds, but rather I have been logging on the home place and my
brother-in-law's place. This has simply kept food on the table and made us able to
travel according to our own schedule. This would have been impossible had we been tied
to a set work schedule. Working for ourselves has made it possible to travel on Mondays
when necessary, and take part in such things as the Jr, High Campthings we feel are
important parts of our basic work.
We have had joys and disappoin"fcments ccme upon us in this time. One joy was a trip
to Illinois to Lincoln Christian College to a meeting of Pioneer Bible Translators Recruits,
This meeting really encouraged us by showing how many are involvedor getting involved.
Our greatest disappointment comes in the form of being asked to get more schooling
which we intend to get this fall at Dallas, Texas, The Board of Pioneer Bible Translators
felt we need some more translation training. We had hoped to wait until our first furlough
to get this, but we will be getting it now instead. The next disappoin"tment is the lack
of adequate support.
Visas seem to be quite slow in coming, but we trust this won't be a.ny great problem
now, since we now have until January to get them straightened out.
Some of the exciting things that are happening are:
1, Visas are now being granted for P,B,T. members,
3, We have primary permission to attend the South Pacific Field Training course,
(a survival training course on jungle living), along with 2 other P,B,T, families
in March.
6. We have met, locally, some people, the Ken Dodds, who have been ir New Giiinea,
some years back, to build a mission hospital. They really encoujaged us and helped
us understand more about what we will encounter when we get to thf field.
When we stop to look at all that has happened and is happening we are only encouraged,
God is at work in our lives. The problems simply show that the Prince of this world
(Satan) opposes us. But, by the Grace of God, we will be able to serve Him soon in
Papua
New Guinea.
Dan
Vacation Bible School and the Junior High Camp were both a real joy and challenge. We
had to come up with a way of presenting missions that would interest all sorts of age levels.
Part of our presentation included puppet plays vdth our own little Da-vid and Mongo, two
puppets I made. Mongo is my attempt to make a puppet of a native Papua New Guinean,
complete with a pen nose decoration piece. The plays were well received by adults and
children alike, but have resulted in our being greeted by, "Ugga Booga", Mongo's favorite
line. Another method we used in the Junior High Camp was to show thr film "PEACE CHILD"
which is a story mission work in the Sawi tribe in the Island of New Guinea. This
illustrated some of the problems v;e might encounter while on the fielc. The children
responded with enthusiasm and interest both to our future work and to missions as a
v7hole.
We are both excited about going and find it difficult to have to set back our departure
date until January, but the training we will receive at Dallas will s^oed and make easier
our v7ork while on the field. Dan will be taking literacy, translatior and anthropology,
ahd I will be in the basic second year linguistics classes which include Phonology,
Grammar and a field methods course, where I will learn by doing how tc obtain language
data from a speaker of another language,
Rosalind
