STATEMENT OF INTENT

1. The proposed Major Project

Motivation & Purpose of the Project
To design and construct a functional computer case with proper and
necessary components as well as achieving aesthetics.
Motivation
To successfully construct a wooden computer case made of
several timber species.
Purpose
To complete project and to be able to use the wooden pc as
manufactured pc would be designed for.
Parameters Of The Design:
The parameters of the computer case consist of
measurements from template factory pc cases which consist
of 20cm in width, 40cm in height, 50cm in length and 20cm
deep.

What are the possibilities?

Materials:
- 120mm cooler fan
- USB ports
- Audio ports
- Power button port
- Reset port
- HDD slots
- DVD drive slot
- PSU slot
- Fan cooler holes and screw bays

Tasmanian blackwood:

Description
A medium sized hardwood that grows in Victoria,
southern NSW and Tasmania. Most of the
commercially available timber now comes from
Tasmania. Heartwood is a golden brown but often
has streaks of darker color and can also have a red
tone. Produces a prized fiddle back.
Workability
Blackwood can vary quite a bit in workability. The hard boards machine very well but
the lighter softer boards can tear and be fluffy. It can spring when ripped.
Blackwood sands well and although it can sometimes be a bit difficult, it is well worth
the effort.
Applications
Furniture, woodturning, general wooden items and flooring. Fiddleback boards are
sought after by musical instrument makers. Blackwood is one of Australias best
bending timbers and can be cold bent or steamed.
Availability
Generally readily available through due to the nature of the tree boards longer than
3.6m are rarer. Sometimes available as slabs and 100 x 100 for posts etc. Blackwood
is readily available as veneered board on a range of substrates
Hardness
Janka 5.9 640kg/m3 Not particularly hard.
Durability
Not for outdoor use.
advantages

disadvantages

a very good alround

timber

- machining is difficult

this timber turns,

bends, sands,
fastening and glueing
and finishing is
excellent.

- pre drilling is required

Hoop pine:

Description
This large soft wood is native to northern NSW and
Queensland. The heartwood is a pale yellow brown
and the sapwood is almost white. The texture is very
fine and even.
Workability
Works extremely well by machine and hand. A fantastic timber that is miles ahead of
the commonly available Radiata pine. It stains, sands and shapes with ease. Its pretty
cheap too. Thats a tick in every box.
Applications
Almost any indoor use. Not great for floors as it is quite soft though we have supplied
it before. Boat builders love it as we can supply up to 6.0m long with no knots! Makes
fantastic plywood which we generally stock
Availability
Very good in most sizes up to 200mm wide. We can also supply some knotty grades
as well as our usual clear stock. Great for schools. Readily available as veneer and
plywood
Hardness
Janka 3.4 530kg/m3 Not very hard.
Durability
Not a durable timber for outdoor use.
advantages
- good timber to work

with
-

turns, machines,
sands, bends,
fasteners and coating
are all excellent on
the timber

disadvantages
- not durable

- timber has a lot of

knots throughout it

Tasmanian oak:

Description
This group of species grows in Tasmania, Victoria and southern
NSW. The worlds tallest hardwood, at 98m, is a regnant in
Tasmania. The timber varies in colour from a pale straw to warm
soft browns and light pinks. The grain is usually very straight
because most boards are quarter sawn.
Workability
These timbers all machine very well. As medium weight hardwoods none of this
group presents any real working problems. The timbers are generally very stable so
can be ripped with confidence. Shaping, sanding and staining are all straight forward
operations.
Applications
Due to the excellent working properties these timbers are widely used for furniture.
They are also very cost effective so make a great choice for the inexperienced
woodworker. We sell tonnes of Tas Oak flooring in 85, 108 and 133mm cover, in both
19 and 13mm thicknesses. We also stock structural F17 for lintels etc.
Availability
Readily available in most sizes up to 200mm and occasionally wider. We also carry
some laminated boards up to 285mm wide. These are popular species for kitchen tops
and this group makes an excellent choice for a woodworkers bench.
Hardness
Janka 4.9 680kg/m3 Moderately hard.
Durability
Not suitable for outdoor use unless fully painted.
Advantages

disadvantages

turns reasonably well -not strong

excellent when
machining

sand beautifully

fasteners are applied

easily

- soft

Jarrah:
Description

A large hardwood from Western Australia with a deep

red heartwood and pale yellow sapwood. It has an
even, coarse texture and occasional fiddle back figure.
Jarrah weighs in around 820kg/m3 making it a lighter
heavy hardwood.
Workability
Works very well with both machine and hand tools.
Often produces dust rather than shavings, especially
with dull tools. The fiddleback figure can create some
problems though jarrah sands very well
Applications
Traditionally used for railway sleepers and poles though now it is a prized furniture
timber. It is readily available as flooring though seldom seen as a decking due to
economics. ( see Karri ) It has good durability so can be used as out door furniture.
Availability
We stock most sizes in 25, 38 and 50mm, sometimes up to 300 x 50. Occasionally
available in 75 x 75 and 100 x 100. Flooring is available in 80 x 19 and 130 x 19.
Veneer boards are also readily available.
Hardness
Janka 8.5 Density 820 kg/m3
Durability
Reasonably durable both in and above ground. Heartwood resistant to termites.
Other information

disadvantages

turns well

bending is difficult

machining is pretty
good

pre drilling is required

bending is difficult
and may snap

- accepts some oils but

may need multiple coats

sands well

Glass pane- a glass pane is a flat piece of

clear glass which is used on window frames
10

and wooden doors glass panes can also be

used on computers to create a transparent
view to the inside of the computers
hardware.

Components

120mm cooler fan- used for cooling the system to indoor

temperature.

An inside view of what a

wooden pc case should look
like, as you can see it does
have the dvd drive and hdd
drive slot already taken out of
another computer case but in
general it gives a good view of
idea.

13

RESEARCH
Every Material, Component, Process and Other Resource that you
are considering must be researched together with its alternatives.
What are your Initial Ideas? What could they be constructed from? What
could they be used for? Describe them.

Shown in the picture on the

left is a clear example of what
my idea for my project will be.

An inside view of what a

wooden pc case should look
like, as you can see it does
have the dvd drive and hdd
drive slot already taken out of
another computer case but in
general it gives a good view of
idea.

14

Although this wooden pc case

job looks good overall but it is
a bit too small and cause over
heating which will eventually
damage some of the more
sensitive components of the
computer. But overall this
design would be suitable for
the major project.

Advantages:
- Very unique design
- Easy accessible inside
- Transparent side view
Disadvantages:
- Very complicated
- Requires optimal amount
of time
- Can be costly

What Components make up the design? Name each and list how many are
there of each?

15

What options are there?

There are several components that will be needed to

construct and make up the design these will include: the
front panel where all the main switches are to be, the rear
panel to be which the back USB connecters shall be, the
side glass clear panel and the top piece where the fans
shall go.
As the major project is a computer case there will be
only one of each piece as each piece plays a unique role.
As I do plan for the side of the computer case to be
transparent in that case I will need to consider a glass
piece, and also need to consider suitable section for this
component. As always a pc needs to be accessed easily
so I have planned for the glass panel to be able to be
removed to access the inside of the pc.
