Needs

I first asked my mom, a longtime nurse at Ronal Regan
UCLA Medical Center, what informational pamphlets and
print could be improved. She mentioned how patients who
underwent heart surgery usually read post-surgery steps
and guidelines from a text-heavy binder and dont have
information to take home with them.

After doing further research, I noticed that besides
needing more information before and after the cardiac
surgery, the patients needed more rest, assistance at home,
quicker Doctor responses, better nursing care, more time
before discharge, and less exposure to medical terminology.
HEART TO HEART PROCESS MANUAL
Audience

The target audience for this project are males and
female 45 - 75 years of age who have just undergone
cardiac surgery in UCLA Medical Center. There may be some
limitation in terms of the patients ability due to the decrease
in vision, hearing, and flexibility in elderly individuals.
How Might I...

Improve the at-home recovery experience
for cardiac surgery patients in which they are
more informed and confident of the steps to
recovery?

Research

I researched several articles that talked about designing
mobile apps for the elderly and what to keep in mind. Overall,
I learned that with any ux/ui, it is extremely important to
constantly keep the individual in mind. Know their limitations,
or walk a mile in their shoes to understand their daily
struggles.

In one article, one of the designers put himself in a suit
that limited his vision and made it difficult to move. He did his
best to experience how the target audience lived and how it
would affect their interaction with the designed product.

Existing Examples

I found mostly brochures and booklets, and only
2 website or mobile device application. The brochures
contained all of the information that a patient needed to
know, but not in a very engaging and interactive way. Were
moving towards a very technologically advanced time so I
believe its very important to keep up with our advances and
allow technology to improve the lives of others.

Technology also allows for engagement and
interactivity, which can seem more personal to the user.
Instead of having to read through pages of text, the user will
be greeted every day with notifications about their recovery
process and health.
Brainstorm

I brainstormed multiple possibilities of what my
product could end up being. This was however, before my
mental click that making an app would be more beneficial
than any paper product, which is why youll read that my
mind shut down the idea of an app in the top right image.

Verbal Wire Frame

As a verbal thinker, I had difficulty sketching rough
wire frames without critically analyzing my sketches. I found
it extremely helpful to write out my functions, purposes, and
features of each page with words.

After creating the verbal wire frame, it was much
easier to sketch out rough ideas of what I wanted in each
page. Having a specific function in mind before visualizing
any specific feature of the app helped me focus more on
functionality rather than appearance.

Wire frames

By only thinking in black and white first, I wasnt
distracted by color, which allowed me to first think in terms
of function verses aesthetics. I felt myself designing with my
research constantly in mind in terms of catering to the needs
of extreme cases of the elderly. Features of the app include
voice command, audio assistance, quick emergency, daily
logs, medicine tracking, and information to the recovery
process.

Digital Sketch

After determining the functionality of each page, I
finally worked in a color scheme. This process was extremely
valuable because each function has the same color. For
example, a click-able button that leads to an effect is the dark
red, an input button is shown by the lighter tint, and the light
grey indicates the menu bar.

Audio assistance provides a speaking voice for every
button the user clicks. A voice will describe their current
location in the app, then describe the function for the button
they clicked. If the user agrees with the destination, he/she
will be instructed to tap the button again to move to their
desired location. For example, if the user taps the menu, a
voice will say that the current location is the side menu. It
will then explain that the user will be able to choose their
progress, information, or advice.

Project Takeaway

This experience was extremely valuable to my growth
as a designer. I learned about my own unique process, I
learned and better understood what it means to design for
a specific target audience, and I learned about my thinking
process during the design process. Doing research based
projects engages your mind and connects you to the material
that youre designing for.

My future steps are to user test my product, refine,
and create a working app that can be used in the real world.
I hope to improve the way that patients feel about their
recovery process and change the world for the better.
