This has been another successful year for our students
and staff, nominated and winning awards for Animation,
Design: Film and Photography, as well as having their
work published in the national press and shown on
the BBC. A special mention must go to Newport Film
School Lecturer Peter Watkins-Hughes who received
BAFTA Cymru nominations for Best Feature (A BIT OF
TOM JONES) and Short Film (the worldwide Internet hit,
COW), which was entirely crewed by our students and
graduates.

This is an exciting time for us as we look forward to
our Media and Design departments moving to the new
city campus; opening on the banks of the river Usk in
Newport in 2011. This will ensure that our students
continue to benefit from our high quality teaching,

The University of Wales, Newport Caerleon campus will be opening its doors to the public. A Graduating students from BA (Hons) Advertising Design will be exhibiting
dazzling array of diverse and innovative work including photography, graphics, animation and fine a diverse range of work at this year’s Show.  During their time in Newport’s
art will be on display for the annual graduate show, featuring contemporary installations as well award-winning design department, students have completed live briefs for

Our internationally recognised, multi-award winning course combines
professional practice with innovation to produce creative, critically-
aware graduates who are fully prepared for the industry. We are one
of only eight courses in the UK to have attained Skillset accreditation.
Our course fuels the industry by setting new standards in creativity
and innovation. The Skillset kitemark means that we can continue to
enhance our excellent relations with key studios and companies.
Graduating students from BA (Hons) Animation will be exhibiting an
exciting range of work – from preliminary designs and concepts, stop-
motion models and character sheets, through to final film animations.

Computer Games Design
BA (Hons) Computer Games Design at Newport is one of the oldest
and most established games design courses in Britain.  It has an
international reputation for teaching, research, alumni and quality
student experience.
Our graduating students will be showcasing their completed games and
exhibiting their concept art. Illustrating their innovative and exciting
game mechanics, novel concepts and a progressive aesthetic, this may be
our best show yet.
Unlike many other courses in the UK, this degree concentrates on design
and creative skills. Students follow a rigorous interrogation of the key
concepts of games design; from character design, illustration, and
3D modelling, to game mechanics, pitching and project management,
utilising an iterative design process throughout. Theoretical and cultural
knowledge of games is built up throughout the course to underpin the
design process.

Gareth Leyshon
Film & Video is part of the International Film School Wales, recognised
by the UK Film Council as a lead partner in the Skillset Screen Academy
Wales. Our graduates move on to successful careers in film and television
directing, producing, cinematography, post-production, sound and
screenwriting.
Many of their final year films have been selected for national and
international festivals and have won prestigious awards.
Work from the students’ graduation films will be on display in the AV / Film
studios, and there will be two screenings of each film.

Graphic Design
Graphic Design is about the visual communication of information. As a
result, students develop an understanding of how the subject has major
implications for the future development of society and our environment.
The course closely follows technological and cultural changes, whilst
maintaining a belief in the core creative and professional values of the
subject. Students are encouraged to explore ideas through a wide range of
media and communication platforms, from the latest digital technology, to
the traditional print and photographic processes.
This exhibition presents design work from an exceptionally talented cohort
of students who plan to progress to employment in a wide range of design
fields including branding, publishing, digital media, exhibition design and
television.

BA (Hons) Photographic Art was conceived by a desire to develop
an undergraduate experience that concerns itself with images
that originate from a position somewhere between traditional
fine art practices, and a more stoic documentary position – both
perspectives that Newport has been historically synonymous
with.
We encourage students to develop work within the gallery and
publishing sectors. In addition, we support the development of
a creative, experimental, independent practice that also equips
graduates with essential skills for the workplace.
