Proposed Title:
Design and developement of hybrid stepped joint with different adhesive and adherand
material.
Proposed work:
To prepare hybrid stepped lap joimt from Al , Steel plates by using different epoxy adhesives.
Varying the number of steps , modifying the design of steps and define the effect of all these
parameters on the strength of joint.
Problem definition:
The conventional or general design with same material of adherand limits the application of
stepped lap adhesive joint for engineering component.
Objectives:

To analyze the stress distribution and to predict strength of stepped lap adhesive joint

under tensile loading.

To study the effect of parameters of the joint such as adhesives, adherand and Youngs
modulus on the strength of adhesive joint.

Research issues:

The application of hybrid structures in safety-relevant applications requires a highly

accurate prediction of their mechanical behavior, which necessitates the development of
robust simulation models and techniques based on, and verified by, appropriate

experimental procedures. [Andreas Ochsner, 2007]

No researches have been performed on the characteristics of stepped lap-adhesive joints
with dissimilar adherends under external bending moments. Stepped-lap adhesive joints

will be widely used in a lot of industries in near future. [Toshiyuki Sawa, 2010]
In spite of increasing applications of adhesive joints in different fields, the adhesive joint
has been considered not suitable for application to key mechanical components due to its
large variance in adhesive joint strength. Therefore it is necessary and important to
understand the stress distribution and to predict strength for the adhesive joints under
different types of external loadings for effective future application of the adhesive joints.
