How Do I Know She is Ready to Be Baptized?

I have often thought that it is a marvelous thing that our Heavenly Father has
chosen 18, 19, and 20 year olds to do the most important thing on the face of the
earth--preach the everlasting gospel of Christ unto the nations of the earth. Equally
impressive is that He trusts that same age group and demographic to decide who is
and who isn't worth to be baptized. When I was set apart by President Dieter F
Uchtdorf, I was given the keys to decide who is worthy to be baptized in the Spain
Barcelona Mission. I, in turn, delegated those same keys to those chosen to be District
Leaders and Zone Leaders at the time I called them to serve in this capacity.
However, the District Leaders and Zone Leaders don't have any idea which of our
Father's spirit children in your individual areas are ready to be baptized until you as
companionships let them know. In other words we all play a major role in making that
incredibly important decision--who is ready to be baptized a member of the church
of Christ? Let's review those criteria.
We read in D&C 20:37 the requirements for a candidate for baptism: "All those who
humble themselves before God, and desire to be baptized, and come forth with
broken hearts and contrite spirits, and witness before the church that they have truly
repented of all their sins, and are willing to take upon them the name of Jesus Christ,
having a determination to serve him to the end and truly manifest by their works that
they have received of the Spirit of Christ unto the remission of their sins, shall be
received by baptism into his church." Thus, those who 1) humble themselves before
the Lord, 2), desire to be baptized, 3) come forth with broken hearts and contrite
spirits, 4) repent of all their sins, 5) are willing to take upon themselves Christ's name, 6)
have a desire to serve Christ until the end, and (7 manifest by their works that they
have received the Spirit of Christ unto a remission of their sins are ready to be
baptized. To these, modern day prophets have added: 8) develop faith in Christ, 9)
live the principles of moral worthiness, 10) live the Word of Wisdom, 11) commit to
paying a full tithing, 12) receive all 5 missionary lessons, 13) meet the bishop/branch
president, and 14) attend at least 2 sacrament meetings.

Those investigators who meet the above criteria are worthy to be baptized. If any of
the above are not present, the individual is NOT ready to be baptized. We are certainly
not interested in offering baptism to someone who has not received a witness from the
Holy Ghost that the Church is true. We are NOT interested in baptisms for the sake of
baptizing. We want true converts--those who have had a mighty change of heart. They
will stay active and build Zion. On the other hands, our investigators don't have to have
a perfect knowledge of the gospel to make this sacred covenant. If the Spirit has
touched their hearts and they are complying with the above 14 criteria--they qualify for
baptism. Thus, every companionship has to make the decision where their investigator is
in this process of obtaining a testimony of the living Christ. All companionships, District
Leaders, and Zone Leaders would do well to review these criteria as they offer their
candidate for baptism. Finally, the Holy Ghost should confirm for all of us if and when
the candidate is ready for baptism. May we prayerfully and carefully prepare, teach
and interview these choice children of our Heavenly Father for this transformation step
in their lives that they may truly be worthy when the time comes for their baptism is my
prayer.

Message From Hermana Dayton

Resourcefulness vs. Wastefulness

Resourcefulness is finding practical uses for that which others would overlook or
discard. A resource is an asset that is available for anticipated needs. The biblical
concept of resourcefulness is "to gather". Noah was asked to build an ark and to
gather animals by two for the voyage. Noah and his family demonstrated
resourcefulness by also gathering food to survive the journey. Another example in
the scriptures of resourcefulness is when Pharaoh was instructed in a dream that
there would be a famine. There would be seven years of plenty and seven years
of famine. Those who believed saved in the seven years of plenty so they would
survive the seven years of famine.
The Savior taught us a parable that has application to resourcefulness. A man
was traveling to a far country and he called his servants and gave them goods.
To one he gave five talents, to another two and to another one. The one who
received the five and two talents went and doubled their value The servant who
received the one talent, "digged in the earth and hid his Lord's money". When the
man returned and inquired he exclaimed to the two men who doubled their
talents, "Well done thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a
few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter in to the joy of the
Lord." The man who buried his talent said, "I was afraid and went and hid thy
talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast is thine". The man replied, "Thou wicked and
slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I
strawed" Matthew 25:15-17.
The goal of increasing our assets must not be to heap up treasures on earth for
ourselves but to increase the ability to give to others. For many years I worked as a
fund raiser for schools and political candidates. I often heard from the wealthy

people I worked with remarks like this, "the more I make gives me the opportunity
to pay more in tithing, fast offering and to give to people in need". I found these
people to have radiant countenances and happy spirits. Others I worked with
were concerned about keeping their money to buy bigger homes, better cars,
more items, etc. I can honestly tell you that those were some of the most
unhappy people I knew. I am convinced that when we are generous with what
the Lord has given us, we find true happiness.
The ultimate example in resourcefulness is the great value our Heavenly Father
sees in each person. He expects us to "seek and to save" that which is lost. As
missionaries we are about seeking and finding His lost sheep. We must do all we
can to protect our most valuable resource--TIME, to make use of every minute of
the day in focused effort on FINDING and TEACHING His children.
We can apply resourcefulness in missionary work by:
--Reusing what we have until it is no longer useful
--Calling Elder Morejon or the dueo to repair what is broken in our pisos before
items become irreparable
--Giving away items we no longer can use--clothes, books, household items, etc.
--Recycling
--using our monthly stipend wisely and spending evenly throughout the month.
--Finding creative ways to use leftovers in the refrigerator
--Using our time wisely during personal, companionship, language study,
proselyting, etc.
Everything we have is given to us by the Lord and we are His stewards. We please
our Heavenly Father by using the resources wisely. We will continue to pray for you
daily as you wisely use the resources you have in building the kingdom in the
Spain Barcelona mission. We love you!

A Message from the Office

PHASE TWO HAS COME!!!

Dear missionaries of El Faro,
This week we will begin the exciting process of implementing Phase 2 throughout the entire mission!
We are very excited for this new application and the changes that will come with it. To make sure that
we have a smooth transition there are a few steps that each companionship will have to perform, some
of them this morning during your regular study time.
1) Watch any of the AreaBook videos found on Missionary Portal that you have not yet seen.
2) Download the AreaBook application unto your iPad.
3) Enter your username and password, and create a password
for the app.
4) Go to the Goals tab on the bottom of the screen, and enter
your weekly goals for this week.

Make sure that you do not enter the

same information/ investigator into the
Area Book Planner as your
companion. After synching, you
would have the same person twice!

5) Go to the Menu tab and select Sync Members.

6) Start the long process of entering all of the investigators (and less-active members not in the
membership list) that you are currently teaching, including all previous visits, commitments, etc.
7) Enter all plans that have been made for today through the rest of the week into the calendar.
8) In every nightly planning update the AreaBook Planner app with the any visits, lessons and new
investigators of that day. Also make plans to contact new referrals that appear on the app.
9) In District meeting on Tuesday use 10-15 minutes to discuss the application, experiences, and
problems that you might be having.
10) Throughout the week make the transition to using the application with all of its features 100%. It
might be advisable to continue using your daily planner along with the application.
11) On Sunday night between 9-10 PM go to the church to enter in the numbers of that day, and
sync with your companion. This is the new way of sending your numbers into the office of the
mission. You will still need to send your numbers to your district leader by 8:45 PM, and these
numbers will need to be the same as the numbers in the AreaBook Planner application.
*Remember that to count as a lesson, each teaching activity must be entered into the application with a
principle taught and a commitment extended, or it will not be counted as a lesson. Also, new
investigators must have an appointment set in the calendar or they will counted as a future investigator.

The Miracle of Baptism

we gave her the gift of the

Holy Ghost on Sunday. She
was smiling from ear to ear
and so very happy to be a
member of the church and to
be able to start a new page
in her life.
The miracle of the week has
once again been taken by
Pedro. He chose to follow the
Savior's path and has made
the sacred covenant of
baptism! He's entered the
gate and he's well on his way
to the end. The week of his
baptism Pedro had a really
hard time with the principle of
tithing. The Wednesday and
Friday before he told us he
didn't want to be baptized
because of these concerns. It
was hard. We taught by the
Spirit and he made the
decision to continue. You
should see him now. Where
there was worry has been
replaced with peace. Where

there was unsurety replaced

by trust. He literally glows, and
it's bright.

So I decided to just do what

was right and continue to
work hard for _______. And
Jennifer got baptized! She
asked me to do it because I
was the only one who taught
the lessons but the lord
blessed me for trying to help
out..... I've been very blessed
by just keeping my head and
my heart in the right always
and being obedient always
pays off.

Juan got baptised!! What

an incredible experience it
was to teach him and help
him to enter into the waters of
baptism.
Juan
was
a
complete miracle. We met
him about a month ago
when he came to church
with his member friend and
from that first moment

everything went perfectly! In

the first lesson he asked us
about baptism and just a few
weeks later he accepted all
we taught as truth and
committed to do and over all
we taught... What a blessing!
Then he was able to take that
step of faith and be baptised
this last weekend. The service
went really well and we had
great support from the
branch;
pretty
much
everyone was there. After he
came up after his baptism he
was crying and we asked him
if he was okay and he just
said that he was so grateful
for all the the members had
done for him and their
support and love.
