Meera Sholevar, 10,

has always loved
being in the water
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
At 9 months old, Meera Sholevar first attempted to enter the
water as she tried to climb into a
hot tub. At that moment, her parents, Priya Gor and Darius Sholevar, knew their daughter was destined to swim. One week later,
Meera began her swim lessons at
the Moorestown YMCA.
Having remained in the pool
every week since her swim lessons began, the now 10-year-old
Meeras love for swimming has
led to her passion, dedication and
commitment to the sport. At age
5, she began her competitive
swim career for the Jersey Wahoos pre-team in Mt. Laurel.
I love being in the water because I can focus on the moment.
I dont think about the outside
world when I am swimming, the

Frank H. Bud
Radey Jr.
August 1, 2016
Frank H. Bud Radey, Jr. A.I.A
of Moorestown, died on Aug. 1 at
age 84.
Bud has always said he was the
luckiest person he knew, and fulfilled all of the aspirations he
ever had. His childhood was spent
in Collingswood where he adopted Newton Creek and the woods
and farms around Cuthbert Road.
Here he trapped muskrats and
hunted small game with his pet
hound. He loved sports, especially
the high hurdles, wrestling and
football. He lettered in these at
the
Pennsylvania
Military
Preparatory School.
At the Georgia Institute of
Technology, he majored in architecture and belonged to the fraternity of Phi Gamm Delta with
which he maintained a life-long
affinity.
In 1960, his banner year, he

married his sweetheart, Patricia

Hoopes Lapp, and achieved his architectural license. He practiced
with his father until 1975, at
which time he became sole practitioner specializing in schools and
corporate construction. Piloting
his plane, he was able to efficiently service his clients throughout
New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
For many years, Radey was a licensing examiner for the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards and graded more
than 2,000 site and building design tests taken throughout the
United State and Canada.
He served as commissioner of
the New Jersey State Board of Architects. He received an American Institute of Architects Presidential Citation for his success
in the formulation of the N.J.
Building Design legislation that
specifies the areas of professional
responsibilities of architects and
engineers. In this regard, he also
received a Letter of Commendation from the 1991 deputy attor-

ney general.
Radey served as the first chairman of the Legislated Joint Committee of Architects and Engineers that adjudicates disputes
between the two professions. As a
member of the American Arbitration Association, Radey served
on numerous panels providing
non-appealable awards in construction disputes.
He was a trustee of the Stratford Military Academy and
served for several years as a member of the Moorestown Appearance Committee. He was a volunteer driver for the American Red
Cross and personally donated
more than seven gallons of blood,
starting from his days in college.
He was the husband of 56 years
of Patricia (nee Lapp), father of
Frank Radey III and his wife Carolyn, Cheryl Lynne Simpson and
her husband Jonathan. He was
also the grandfather of Danielle
and Michael Radey, Jack and Max

Let The Sun take part in your school year events, activities and news
s students return to school in
just four short weeks, we all
will soon get back into a daily
routine. Once the unofficial end to
summer has passed, there will be a return to a normal life whether you
were lucky enough to have a threemonth vacation or not.
Back to school signifies a new beginning, maybe even more so for many
than the drop of the ball on New
Years. Its a time for looking ahead,
not for looking back.
Here at The Sun, back to school signifies the start of a busier time. In the
next few weeks papers, youll see coverage of the return to school from
stories about upcoming changes in the
school district to photos of teachers
setting up their classrooms to high

And as students prepare to embark
on a new adventure in a new school
year, we remind you that The Sun is
here to shine light on your school,
your team, your son, your daughter,
your teachers, your group, your PTA,
your organization and your neighbors.
We want to congratulate Suzy on a

her schools honor roll, deans list or

when she receives academic recognition. We want to print photos of Johnnie waving goodbye to mom or dad as
he enters his new school for the first

We want to send a reporter to cover

Ordinances to preserve open space working

We are now more than halfway through
summer, and many residents have been
busy enjoying all that our town has to offer
in the great outdoors. Whether it's going on
a hike, spending a Sunday morning fishing, taking your family on a picnic or riding your bike along Strawbridge Lake,
Moorestown has plenty of ways to enjoy
our more than 800 acres of preserved open
space.
Our parks, fields, farms and waterways
are more than just natural treasures; they
are an important part of the fabric of our
community.
That's why one year ago, Deputy Mayor
Victoria Napolitano and I led the charge on
town council with the support of our Open
Space Advisory Committee to pass a township ordinance that pushed back against

open space encroachments that would minimize or even destroy

pieces of our preserved
natural areas.
Today, I am happy to
report that these ordinances are working just
as we'd hoped. Property
owners who had committed violations have
since voluntarily fixed Phil Garwood
the violations that had
MAYORS
been recorded.
MESSAGE
Additionally,
our
zoning officer has been in close contact
with these individuals to restore our open
spaces to the proper condition.
This is a positive step in making sure

that our open spaces remain green and

beautiful for generations to come, and I
couldn't be happier to see that our town
continues heading in the right direction on
this issue!
If you would like to volunteer to help
keep our open spaces the best they can be,
please visit the website of Save The Environment of Moorestown at www.STEMonline.org and click the "Natural Area Care"
tab for a list of dates, times and locations
where residents will be volunteering their
time and energy to keep our open spaces in
tip-top shape. On behalf of the Town Council, I encourage all of our neighbors to get
outside and enjoy the beautiful weather
right here in our town's borders. Have a
great rest of your summer, and I will see
you around town!

Former MHS
counselor wins award
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
Each year dating to 2006, graduating seniors at Drexel University have been invited to nominate
a high school teacher who had inspired them to pursue a college
education for the Harold W. Pote
Behind Every Graduate Award.
This year, Moorestown High
School alumni and recent Drexel
University graduate Jennifer
Lam nominated former MHS
counselor Raheel Saleem for the
award.
To be eligible to receive this
award, a nominee must be an active high school teacher or staff
member of a graduating senior at
Drexel University, and he or she
must have been nominated before
April 22. Seniors choosing to
nominate a teacher must have
done so online and included the
necessary nomination information along with a one- to two-page
essay discussing the nominees
influence on that particular seniors educational path.
This year, Saleem, who is now

the school counselor at Montgomery High School in Skillman,

was one of four recipients and
was presented this award at the
university president John A.
Frys commencement dinner held
on Friday, June 10. He was awarded an all-expenses-paid stay in
Philadelphia to attend the event
and an additional $2,000 prize.
Lam chose to nominate Saleem,
whom she first met in 2010, for
the deep impact he made on her
life while she attended MHS.
I think that a lot of people in
the education field don't get
enough praise and appreciation,
and Mr. Saleem is one of those exceptional people. I was notified on
my birthday and I couldn't have
asked for a better gift, Lam said.
I wasn't sure if it would work,
but I used my essay submission to
build a convincing case for this
amazing individual.
In her essay, Lam drew on her
experience at MHS and how during this malleable and impressionable stage in life, Saleem beplease see FORMER, page 13

came more than just her high
school guidance counselor. Instead he became the person behind the graduate, or who consistently and actively believed in
her future. In her essay she wrote,
In addition to his role as my
guidance counselor, [Saleem]
served a vital role in my success
and accomplishments today. Its
not that other people didnt believe in me, but where they had
some doubts about the future, he
showed me that my future depends on my choices and decisions, not what strangers in an
admissions office think I can do.
Even after being told her essay
had won Saleem the award, Lam
decided to keep the news a secret
from her nominee. Although she
had planned to share the essay
with him after the results were released, she wanted to keep her
nomination a surprise.
As soon as I heard that the
award was based out of Drexel
University, I thought back to who
I helped get into Drexel and I
could only think of one person,

Special to The Sun

From left, Raheel Saleem, Jennifer Lam and Drexel University President John A. Fry stand at Frys commencement dinner held on Friday, June 10.

Saleem said. Thinking back to it,

I just knew it was Jenn who nominated me. Soon after I spoke to
Drexel University, Jenn sent me
an email to say that I had won an
award.
Helping award Saleem the
recognition she felt he deserves,
Lam is glad she has been able to
give back to the member of her
high school staff whom she felt
has given so much to her. As she

says in the conclusion of her

essay, there is not one other person she feels is better deserving of
such an award.
Winning the award was great,
but the greatest part about winning was knowing that I was able
to help Jenn. She is truly a remarkable young woman, and I
know that she is going to do great
things and help others in her future, Saleem said.

The Recreation Special Needs

Summer Camp just completed its
eighth summer as an opportunity
for individuals with special needs
to maintain valuable skills and a
consistent system of support
throughout the summer months.
For the first seven years, the
camp was attended by children
ages 5 through 12. This summer,
as the families of many children
who had grown up in the program were wondering what was
next, the Department of Parks &
Recreation and community partner, Sean Fischel Connect, made
history as the camp was extended
to children up to age 21.
The Recreation Special Needs
Summer Camp began in 2008.
The Department of Parks &
Recreation received a grant from
the Department of Community
Affairs of the state with 20 percent matching funds donated
from Moorestown Township to
provide a meaningful summer experience for special needs children ages 5 through 12, and their
families.
As state funding began to

shrink, community partners such

as the Moorestown Education
Foundation, Bayada Home Health
Care and Quaker Wealth Management supported the program
with donations. This year, when
it seemed that the children who
were aging out of the program
would have nowhere to go, the
Special Needs Camp expanded its
ages thanks to SFC.
This summer, anyone who visited the camp was greeted by
smiling children of younger ages
and the older students participating in jobs training and life skills
development.
Campers often greeted this visitor with a mobile coffee and
snack cart that they would take to
the various classrooms for the
teaching staff.
The generous support that has
come from SFC has been a natural evolution of the relationship
that started in 2013. Kimberly
Fischel, who has worked tirelessly for the organization named for
her youngest child, Sean, has
maintained that the organization
will continue its support of the
Department of Parks & Recreation and the Special Needs Program because of the support it of-

fers children and their families.

The significance to Kimberly is
simple; to provide services for
children who are underserved or
not covered by other services, to
make sure that no child is denied
access to a program that helps
them to grow and thrive and to
make sure that all children in our
community find support.
Thank you again to community partner Sean Fischel Connect
for the funding and opportunities
provided to 37 young people this
summer. The summer program
included specialized instruction
for each child, exciting field trips,
connection to the Moorestown
Township Public Schools Extended School Year and new friendships with fellow campers, CITs
and counselors alike.
Sean Fischel Connect is able to
provide this overwhelming support as a result of its hugely successful fundraising effort in October the Sean Fischel Connect 5K
and 1 Mile Fun Run on Sunday,
Oct. 9. For more information
about how to support this wonderful organization and the programs
it
supports,

Breakfast Rotary celebrates 30 years

By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
In the 1920s, two Rotary Clubs
were founded in Moorestown: the
Rotary Gun Club and the Rotary
Lunch Club. Then in 1986, a new
club, the Moorestown Breakfast
Rotary Club, arose for those participants who found it difficult to
break away during the middle of
the day to meet for lunch. This
club now celebrates its many accomplishments spanning three
active decades.
The Moorestown Breakfast Rotary Club was designed as an easy
way to give back to the local and
international communities and to
those people who are not as fortunate as the members who live in
Moorestown. Founding members
of the club include its first president, Dick Leuliette, as well as
Don Petroski, Phil Cooper, Joe
Gross, Rick Young, Mike O'Connor, Bill Brown, Jack Ginsberg,
David Friedman and the late
Doug Lewis.

Rick Young and I had difficulties meeting at lunchtime and we

both enjoyed Rotary, so we decided to have a breakfast club in
Moorestown representing Rotary, the now 77-year-old Leuliette, who resides in Delaware,
said. As far as getting the club off
the ground, it was a piece of cake
for me because we had tremendous support from the membership. It was a pleasure for me to
be a part of Rotary, and the club is
just terrific theyre a great
bunch of guys.
These
founding
members
blazed a new trail to increase avenues to give back both to
Moorestown and the international community, and today the
roughly 70 members continue to
keep the club involved in many
charitable events throughout the
year.
We never run out of places to
give money. Charity begins at
home, Young said.
Some local charities the club
has funded include YMCA Camp

Additionally, this year the
Moorestown Breakfast Rotary
Club will host its annual backpack stuffing drive on Tuesday,
Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. at the
Moorestown Community House.
The club hopes to be able to fill
approximately 160 backpacks
with school supplies, from folders
to pencils, for Moorestown students in need in grades K-12. The
backpacks will be delivered to
Moorestown Ecumenical Neighborhood Development and the
Moorestown school district before the start of the school year.
Its a relatively new club considering how long Moorestown
has been around, and weve been
able to grow the club tremendously in the past 30 years,
Moorestown Breakfast Rotary
Club President Scott Aschoff
said.
We want to honor the founding members because a lot of
clubs come and go, but this one
has survived and has been able to
contribute back to the community over the decades. This is a
great milestone.
For those interested in becoming a member of the Moorestown
Breakfast Rotary Club, an individual must attend three meetings. Then, the Board of Directors will give the individual an application to fill out, and then the
board will vote on whether to
allow that person to join.
If
interested,
individuals
should attend one of the clubs
meetings, held every Wednesday
at the Moorestown Community
House at 7 a.m. for camaraderie
and coffee, a 7:15 a.m. breakfast
and the meetings begin promptly

letters to the editor

Police force is the best
part of Moorestown
We moved to Moorestown in
1947. In our view, the Moorestown
police force has always been, and
continues to be, the best thing
about Moorestown.
Mrs. (Kate) A. F. Decker

Moorestown needs to
start working together
I'm writing you this letter to
voice my opinion on the most recent council meeting.
The way the town solicitor,
township manager and council
members behaved is beyond belief.
You are elected officials and
hired professionals put in a place
to do what is best for the community. That would include fielding
questions that you might deem
repetitive and, while doing so, do

it impartially.
The solicitor should run for
mayor because apparently he controls the meetings.
Sadly, we don't elect our mayor,
but that is a conversation for a
later date.
The fact that we have council
members specifically mentioning
residents by name (who left the
meeting and couldn't defend
themselves) in their closing comments, referring to them as
shameful and a waste of time
is absurd.
Is that up to council and paid
employees to decide?
There was also a reference to
the meetings being taped by residents and broadcast to social
media. Why is this a concern? I
have a suggestion for our current
council since the room in town
hall was paid for by taxpayers and
is set up for recording and apparently does so when there aren't
technical difficulties, why does-

n't the township do it all the time

for its residents?
Don't all of our surrounding
towns film meetings and have
them available on a television
channel or at the very least online? Does our current council,
solicitor and manager not want to
be filmed? Does talking about our
current water situation bother
council members? It should.
It should have them worried
about everyone's health. They
need to start with being transparent and seeking help from any
and all sources willing to give it.
That's the Moorestown I remember and the Moorestown I grew
up in. We fixed things, no matter
the situation.
Everyone brainstormed and
found a solution. The community
was involved and had input, and
ultimately we accomplished more
together. Let's try and get back to
that.

Since her experience with the

the following year she won her

Then, in 2015, Meera won the 910 girls 25-meter backstroke at the

and Eliana Delgado, came in first
place with a time of 1:15:69.
Meeras additional accomplishments include winning last Decembers Turkey Claus Championship in Maryland for 9-10 girls
50-yard butterfly, and placing
third for 100-yard freestyle. In an
attempt to become the best swimmer she can be, Meera plans to remain committed to swimming for
the Jersey Wahoos in Mt. Laurel
this year.
Swimming has taught me that
you have to work hard for what
you desire, Meera said. Sometimes, I don't get what I want but I
know I have to work 'not just
harder, but smarter,' as coach Jim
says. This doesn't just apply to
swimming.
Although Meera swims during
all seasons and every day during
the summer, when she is not in
the pool, she enjoys playing with
her friends, singing, watching
movies, hanging out with her
brother and playing tennis and
soccer.
Her favorite subjects in school
are math and gym.
