GLACIERS EDGE COUNCIL DISTINGUISHED EAGLE SCOUTS

The Distinguished Eagle Scout Award was established in 1969 to acknowledge Eagle Scouts who have
received extraordinary national-level recognition, fame, or eminence within their field, and have a
strong record of voluntary service to their community. Only Eagle Scouts who earned the Eagle Scout
rank a minimum of 25 years previously are eligible for nomination. The award is given by the
National Eagle Scout Association upon the recommendation of a committee of Distinguished Eagle
Scouts.
To date two individuals have earned the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award:
Dr. Lewis Harned and Governor Scott Walker.

Congratulations
Eagle Scout Class 2014
Whats It Worth?
The Eagle Badge. The highest rank a Scout can
earn. What is it worth? Well, in dollars and cents it
is worth about $7.50. Probably two and a half dollars in silver, twenty fives cents worth of ribbon,
and the rest of it in manufacturing and handling
cost. But, what is it really worth to you?
Think back to the time when you first became a
Scout. Remember the Scout skills that you learned
for each rank? And the re-dedication to the Scout
Oath and Law each time you advanced. Think of
the service that you have given to your troop and
to other people. Is your Eagle badge worth $7.50?
Of course not! Your Eagle badge is priceless. It
represents everything that you have learned, everything that you have done, to be prepared, to help
others, and to help yourself.
So now you stand on the peak of the mountain.
An Eagle Scout, now look ahead, look sharp. Way
out there in the mist is another mountain, and there
below is the trail to your future. It may be a long
trail, or a short one, but it leads to that mountain
far away. As you walk down the trail, and as the
years roll by and finally reach the end, we all hope
that you can look back on the trail of life and be
able and proud to say, I have done my best.

FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO YOUTH

2015 SILVER BEAVER AWARD

RECIPIENTS
The strength of the Scouting movement lies in the dedicated support of its volunteers; the men and women who work tirelessly on
behalf of the youth of our communities. The Silver Beaver award is the highest award the GLACIERS EDGE COUNCIL, Boy
Scouts of America, can bestow - yet it is a small tribute compared to the thanks earned from the youths themselves. The number
of people a council can honor with the Silver Beaver award each year is determined by the number of chartered units at year-end,
one for every 60 units in the council. In the past 84 years, almost 500 individuals have been presented with this award.

John Everitt
John Everitt serves as the District Chairman for the Yahara District. He is the President of Stearns Packaging
Corporation. John has a long Scouting background in the Madison area going back to his days as a Scout in
Troop 5. While a Scout he and other members of his troop were responsible for the daily raising of the American flag at the Governors Mansion.
In addition to his current role in Scouting, John has been involved in Scouting as a Den Leader, Cubmaster,
Troop Committee Member, Committee Chair, and Merit Badge Counselor. John has also been active in the
annual council Distinguished Citizen Dinner which is the largest special fundraising event in the Glaciers
Edge Council.
At our Scout Camps, John has helped complete both small and large repair jobs. One of Johns hobbies is restoring old trucks. When John
saw that the 1966 EBSR Dump Truck was sitting abandoned he volunteered to completely restore it at his expense.
John is active in his faith serving as chairman for several committees at Christ Presbyterian Church in Madison. He has also served as
chairmen for committees at Madison Country Day School and a member of the Madison Downtown Rotary. John and his wife Cynthia
have two children, Eagle Scout John Jr. and a daughter Grace.

Mike Hoffman

Mike serves as an Assistant District Commissioner for the Southern Lakes District. He has served as a Committee Member,
Committee Chair, and Cubmaster. Mike has also served Scouting as a member of the District Committee, Unit Commissioner, Boy
Scout Roundtable Commissioner and as the District Commissioner. In addition, he has served on numerous training staffs for both
district and council events.
Mike feels very strongly that the training of youth leaders is vital to the success of the Boy Scout
program. His involvement with National Youth Leader Training has included numerous staff positions
including serving as one of the course directors in 2014.
With the possibility of Scouting in his hometown of Darien ending, Mike took it upon himself to start a
new organization so that Troop 605 could continue to serve youth.
Mike and his wife Sherry are recently retired. He shared that one of the things he was most looking
forward to in retirement was to be able to give more time to Scouting.

11

2015 SILVER BEAVER AWARD RECIPIENTS

Linda Huttenhoff

Linda serves in Scouting in many ways. In the Yahara District, she has served several roles including Adult
Recognition and Chair of the District Recognition Dinner. Her service to the Glaciers Edge Council includes
the Council Camping Committee, the Catholic
Committee on Scouting and Camp Staff at Ed Bryant Scout Reservation for the last six summers. She has
been recognized with many awards in Scouting including the District Award of Merit and the Vigil Honor in
the Order of the Arrow.
Her dedication to youth goes beyond Scouting. Linda has had a career working in youth soccer. She works
for Madison Area Youth Soccer Association (MAYSA) as the Referee and Scheduling Coordinator. She has
also been responsible for training hundreds of area Youth Soccer referees over the year. Linda was able to
incorporate her love of both Soccer and Scouting during a pilot program called Soccer & Scouting.
Linda is a proud Fox from the Woodbadge Course in 2009. As part of her Ticket, she taught a Pow Wow course on Adult Recognition,
and soon found herself organizing and promoting Adult Recognition including four years as the chair of the Yahara District Dinner, and
continues to serve on the District Awards Committee.
In addition to her commitment to soccer and Scouting, she is active at St. Dennis Catholic Church as a Eucharistic Minister, Sacristan,
and with the Arts and Environment Committee.
Linda is the proud mother of three children; Cathy, Patrick, and Mickey. In partnership with her husband John, they produced two Eagle
Scouts and a Venturer, combined, spent 20 years serving on camp staff at EBSR. Each of their children continue to be active in Scouting.

Sheriff Dave Mahoney

David serves the community as the Dane County Sheriff, a position he has held since 2006. A career law enforcement officer,
David has credited his time as an Explorer to helping him find his lifes work. Since his election as Sheriff, he has served as the
Institutional Head of Law Enforcement Post 2125 which is one of the oldest programs in our council and has led to numerous youth
pursuing careers in Law Enforcement. Post 2125 has been nationally recognized by the Boy Scouts of America for their quality program and they have won numerous national competitions.
With his background in Scouting, and his concern for youth, it is not surprising that he has served on the Executive Board of the
Glaciers Edge Council. He has been an active member of the Council Nominating Committee and assisted with numerous other projects that have benefited youth.
In addition to Scouting David works with numerous organizations to ensure that youth do not meet his staff
in an official capacity. Some of these organizations include Boys & Girls Club, Reach a Child, Dane
County Youth Gang Task Force, and the United Way of Dane County. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Badger State Sheriffs Association and is well respected by his peers on the state and national
level.
David and his wife Kathleen, have two college aged children Patrick and Sean.

of new members to the Glaciers Edge Council Board. During his tenure he and his committee have

council. He also has served as a Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos leaders for his sons as they have moved through Cub Scouting.
Jason is also a member of the Henry Vilas Zoological Society Board and a member of Rotary of Downtown Madison. As a

Committees.

An Eagle Scout and Camp Staff veteran, Philips passion for Scouting is summer camp. He has served on numerous
camp staffs and has served as an instructor for National Camp School. Since agreeing to serve as the Glaciers Edge
Council Camping Chair he went above and beyond to help rebrand and revitalize our summer camp programs. His
vision and commitment is working to see Ed Bryant Scout Reservation increase attendance and create a culture of
customer service at our camps.
Philip is a Senior Partner at the investment firm of Blackhorn Partners. He is also a member of
the Madison Downtown Rotary Club and is active in Phi Kappa Sigma as a chapter advisor,

HONORING
OUR 2014
EAGLES
20

Congratulations to the
2014 Eagle Scouts
The Scouts gave you a challenge, and youve met it
faithfully my friend,
But it is quite hard to understand, just all it will mean in
the end.
An Eagle Scout, youve reached the top, or have you
only just begun?
Im betting that you will not stop, with so much glory to
be won.
For life holds out a challenge too, A mountain high for
you to scale
And with the training Scouts gave you, theres really
no such word as fail.
And so as you press on ahead, youll find its made
much work like play,
And as the tasks before you spread, theyll find you
ready, so Ill say.
Congratulations Eagle Scout, the world before you
now spread,
Scouts taught you much what lifes about, prepared
you well for whats ahead.
