I decided to enrol in the Master of

Education (180 point) programme because
the new fast-track option, where I can
go straight from a bachelors degree, was
really appealing.
I have always been interested in early childhood and children and
used to work as a nanny, but I did not think about university study
until three years ago. Last year, I completed a Bachelor of Education
(Teaching) in Early Childhood Education and really enjoyed my
studies.
I am currently studying EDUC 711 Gifted Learners: who are they?
The subject really interests me and it is relevant to my research
interest. Im enjoying being able to spend a whole semester focusing
on this fascinating and important topic.
My long term goal is to become a researcher within the early
childhood sector, perhaps contribute to initial teacher education
programmes, and eventually pursue a doctoral degree. My shortterm goal is to gain further practical experience with young learners
in early childhood settings.
I have found that the Faculty of Education and Social Work provides
an environment where students can really engage with staff and
research. I have made strong friendships with other students
and I enjoy excellent support from highly dedicated and very
approachable staff.
Claire Mayo is studying towards a Master of Education.

Postgraduate Diploma in Educational

Leadership
One year full-time (two years part-time)

I enrolled in the Master of Education so I

could gain more research experience in my
area of interest, which is gifted and talented
students in the primary and secondary
levels.
My goal is to have a university career as a lecturer and researcher. My
lecturer in Hong Kong recommended the University of Auckland and
after researching online, I made my decision to study here.
I really enjoyed my studies because my supervisor, Dr John Hope, is
very kind and warm hearted, and the other staff were also supportive.
My supervisor also taught me the importance of critical thinking,
which has been helpful especially for my academic achievement.
Submitting my masters dissertation was an unforgettable experience.
It was my first time doing this kind of research independently. I really
felt a strong sense of achievement when I finished, which gave me the
confidence to study further and pursue my PhD.
The University gives you freedom to choose and is a good place to do
research in your area of interest.

I was particularly interested in the Master

of Teaching (Secondary) programme
because it enables me to obtain a teaching
qualification but with a particular focus on
priority learners.
I have a masters degree in History from Uppsala University in my
home country of Sweden, where I have worked as a teacher aide. I
am now living in New Zealand and want a career where I can make a
difference for young people.
In my courses at the Faculty of Education and Social Work, we are
being equipped with tools to facilitate the success of all students,
including those belonging to historically disadvantaged groups.
We learn to apply theories on culturally responsive pedagogy and
teaching for social justice to our ongoing practicum experiences in
Auckland schools.
I enjoy listening to researchers and education professionals sharing
their findings and experiences during our classes. As well as the
practicum blocks, we usually spend two days per week out in the field.
It means practice is never separated from theory.
I am looking forward to a long teaching career in New Zealand
state schools. I would also like to do further study in one of my main
research interests, which is History teaching in schools.
Kristofer Ekholm is studying the Master of Teaching (Secondary)
programme so he can qualify as a History and Social Studies teacher.

I chose to move to New

Zealand to study at the
University of Auckland
because its a world-ranked
university and offers
high-quality programmes.
What Im particularly enjoying are the
monthly roundtable discussions held by the
Postgraduate Students' Association, where
interesting topics are discussed and I get
the opportunity to meet and chat with my
fellow PhD students. The free workshops are
also fantastic as they provide support to
improve and excel in my studies.
During the course of my study, Ive had
an opportunity to present at an Applied
Linguistics Association Conference in
Wellington, which has helped me make
more connections with other researchers
and to improve on my research.
Pursuing my PhD allows me to explore
more of my research area in linguistics and
to upgrade my knowledge and skills as a
professional. After completing my PhD, I
look forward to returning to Malaysia as a
lecturer in the polytechnic where I worked.
Mazlin Mohamed Mokhtar from Malaysia

I like the fact that as a

doctoral student in the School
of Counselling, Human Services
and Social Work I am treated
as a colleague and not just a
student.
For my PhD research I worked with local nongovernment organisations and other community
members in a rural community in Kenya to
build safe spaces for sex talk between youth
and adults and to eventually promote healthy
behaviours and better understanding of the topic
in future youth.
I chose the University of Auckland because my
supervisor Associate Professor Christa Fouch
has spent years working in the African context
and really supported my vision with communityaction research.
Here, I have had the opportunity to study
independently as well as learn from a group of
talented and caring researchers who I am lucky
to have as a support network. Their guidance has
encouraged me to never think too small and that
all my larger than life ideas are worth pursuing.
My department and all of the people in it have
been so willing to offer advice, show up and give
feedback on presentations, share materials and
offer emotional support.
Laura Ann Chubb from Canada is studying

of the Academic Career Exploration Scholarship
for 2016, which will help to build her skills as an

Doctoral programmes
Doctoral programmes are the highest-level qualifications that can be awarded by the University of
Auckland. A doctorate is an advanced course of study and original research lasting the equivalent of three
to four years full-time. It culminates in the presentation of a written thesis (accompanied in some cases by
a body of creative work) and an oral examination. Completion of a doctorate enables candidates to provide
leadership in their communities through the development and dissemination of knowledge, and the design
and conduct of comprehensive research that contributes to new knowledge.
The Faculty of Education and Social Work is committed to improving the
quality and understanding of education and social services in Aotearoa New
Zealand and internationally through quality teaching and research. We have
a thriving community of doctoral candidates who are actively involved in
the community, turning knowledge gained through research into tangible
benefits for society.
We offer two doctoral programmes:
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education or Social Work
Doctor of Education (EdD)
Further information about eligibility for the PhD and EdD, scholarships
available, fees and money matters, and English-language requirements can
be found on the faculty website.
www.education.auckland.ac.nz/doc
All faculty doctoral candidates are eligible for the University of Auckland
Doctoral Scholarships. These are generous postgraduate scholarships
valued at $27,000 per annum for three years of full-time doctoral
study. There are no application forms or closing dates: you apply for
your programme and the scholarship is assessed at the same time. All
candidates meeting the criteria will be guaranteed a scholarship. For more
information and to see if you qualify visit:
www.auckland.ac.nz/makethegrade

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education or

Social Work

We welcome the best, brightest and most committed scholars to become
part of our community of doctoral candidates researching in education,
social work, counselling, and community and social services. As a PhD
student, you will be expected to carry out original and advanced research,
and present it as a thesis. An oral examination completes the degree.
There are five schools in the Faculty of Education and Social Work that you
can choose to work with for your doctoral research:
Counselling, Human Services and Social Work

You will be supervised by academics with knowledge and expertise in the

area of study and selected research methods. During the first year of the
programme (one year full-time or two years part-time study) you will be
expected to complete the requirements of the provisional year, culminating
in the submission of a full research proposal. It is possible to commence the
programme at any time during the year.
*New international PhD students are entitled to domestic fee benefits subject to supervisory
and residency requirements.

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Four to six years (part-time programme for the first two
years, and either part or full-time for the remaining time)**
The EdD programme is designed with working professionals in mind,
providing a flexible and convenient approach to further study. We are the
only New Zealand university to be a member of CPED, the Carnegie Project
on the Education Doctorate, a global consortium of over 80 colleges
and schools of education committed to generating new knowledge and
scholarship about educational practice in the Doctor of Education.
Undertaking an EdD will enable you to generate new knowledge to advance
educational practice and policy in Aotearoa New Zealand.
This unique, cohort-based doctoral programme starts in July and is offered
with a different focus or inquiry pathway each year. In 2017 the inquiry
pathway will be led by researchers and academic staff in the facultys
School of Critical Studies in Education, with a particular focus on social
issues and equity in education. You will be working with cohort lecturers
for the first two years of the programme and then with your own research
supervisors who have knowledge and expertise in your area of study and a
range of research methods.
The EdD has the same status as the PhD, but recognises the professional
experience you bring and your desire to apply research directly to your
professional context.
**The EdD may not be appropriate for international students who need to study full-time to
