Introduction
For this statistic project, we will try to find out how the majority of the students
and staff at travel daily to and from how long does it take them to, what are their
first and second options of traveling and what are the factors affecting their
choice, we will make a comparison between the two major groups namely:
students and staff.

The Project Hypothesis:

Weve assumed that there will be a large number of students travel to by
walking as most of the students who study in IT live near the campus. And the
time taken for them to reach the college will be in the range of 5 minute to 20
minutes. Meanwhile for staff members, we predicted that most of the staffs who
works in the institute travel by cars, and the time taken for them to reach the IT
is between 20 minutes to 30 minutes.

Questionnaires:
Weve have asked the volunteers who participated in our project the following
questions, and the following multiple answers to choose from, weve also added
one choice if the our answers were different:

1. What is your status at the Institute of IT?

Student

Staff

2. How old are you?

15-19
20-25
26-30

4. What is the main reason for choosing that mode?

Quickest
Lack of alternative
Less Stressful

Institute of IT?

8. Are there any factors or needs which sometimes affect your

choice of mode of transport for the journey to Institute of IT?
Yes - Please comment:...................................................
No

Data:
The total number of people who participate in this experiment is 90, it is
important to mention that Staff category includes lecturers , managements ,
cleaners and chefs , this will give a wider and general picture, and will include
personnel from different areas and specialists
For the first question, we got the following result:
What is your status at the Institute of IT?

Students

Staf

Skipped

78 of our survey volunteers were students, 11 were staff and 1 volunteer did not
answer the question, it is shown that 87% of the participants are students, this
might have an affect on the rest of the answer.
For the second question, we got this result:

The majority of the volunteers who answered this questions are between 20 30
years old , exactly 80%.
In the third question, we got the following responds:

How do you usually travel to institute of IT Carlow?

58% of the volunteers have chosen either walking or cycling as their primary
mode of transport, 24 of people use their car, 8 uses the bus and 5 uses a carpool
or motorcycle, none of them use taxi as their primary transport mode.
In question number 4, we got the following respond:

What is the main reason for choosing that mode?

Half of the volunteers chosen their transport mode because its the
quickest way to the institute, 16% did not have any other option to use
to go to the college, this is an interesting point and we will further
inspect it in the finding section.

Question number 5 came up with the following result:

What is your Second and occasional way to travel to Institute of IT Carlow?

this chart shows that in every 10 people who study or work at IT, 4 of
them walks to school when they arent using their first transport
mode, the car option dropped from 27% to nearly 19% as a secondary

mode, as a secondary option 3% said that they would use the taxi as
an alternative option, raising from 0%.
Question number 6 came up with the following results:

How long does you trip to Institute of IT Carlow usually take ?

The answers came up as the following: 15 takes them 5 minutes to

reach the institute, 23 less than 10 minutes, 26 between 11-20
minutes, this means that 79% of the volunteers weve asked reach the
school within 20 minutes.
Question number 7 came up with the following responds:

How far do you travel to Institute of IT Carlow?

12 of the volunteers said they life within 500 meters of the institute,
28 said within 1000 meters, and 29 said that they live within
10

3kilometers from the IT. It is important to mention that almost 90% of

the city enter of is within the range of 3 kilometres1
The last Questions came up with the following answers:

Are there any factors or needs which sometimes affect your choice of mode of transport for the journey to Institute of IT Carlow?
no

16%

yes

84%

76 volunteer said that no other factors than the mentioned above have
affect their mode of transportation, while 14 of them said yes, out of
the 14 who said yes , 13 have mentioned that its the lovely Irish
Weather who made them change it , one of the volunteer mentioned
that its due to the pollution and money .

Findings:
From our result, we can draw a general picture of how does the IT
Community use transportation to get to and from the institute.
To answer our thesis question: weve predicted that larger number of
the staff members leave more than 3 km away from the college, and
use the car as their everyday transport, weve analysed the results and
found out that our prediction was Correct; 10 out of 11 of the staff
use cars as their first option, while 1 use the bus, and his journey takes
more than 30 minutes, the rest have a journey time of 11 to 30
minutes to reach the college.

1 Done using : maps.ie/distance-area-calculator.html

11

As for the second prediction, we found out that it was Correct; as we

can see clearly in question number 3, if we deduced the number of
staff using cars -10-, we will find that 55 student -67%- use either
cycling or walking to come to college, and if we ignor the staff
numbers, well find that 75% of the students reach the college within
20 minutes.
