(1.0) INTRODUCTION

Nowadays, technology becomes a vital part of our daily life. It is included in most of life aspects. One of
the emerging technologies is the smart homes technology. This technology will influence the structure of
the houses in the coming ten year. Smart homes promote comfort, luxury, entertainment, security, and
world peace. Altering an existing home to accommodate changing needs can cost up to three times more
than including the same features in the initial design. Current existing smart homes need special kind of
appliances to deal with. These appliances should be equipped with a network adapter since they should
connect to a wired network. Smart homes also should contain a pre-installed wired infrastructure in order
to provide a mean of communication between the appliances. Smart home technology originally depends
on the wired network infrastructure but after the huge improvements in that technology, it also supports
the wireless communication over multiple frequencies to control the system.

(1.1) Objective:

The main objective of this project is to design and implement a low cost wireless smart home system. The
system will be developed to enable controlling various devices via radio frequency. A main feature of this
system is that it will uses the regular home appliances/devices with no or minimal modification.

The proposed design will include:

 Analysis of electronic appliances involved in the process

 The user interface system that will take the commands from the user

 The communication system that carries the user commands to the terminals.

 The action taken by the terminals when receiving the user command from the main controller.

(2.0) ELECTRONIC APPLIANCES

REPORT

(1.1) Overview:

Today we are used to control our televisions, videos and DVD-players using their own individual handheld
infrared remote controllers. Setting up the home theatre system for movie may need the using of several
different remote controllers. Every one of those has its’ own unique user interface and the user has to
remember how to use all of them. Moreover the user has to be in line-of-sight with the controllable
appliance when using infrared communication.

In any case, the number of electronic devices in the future homes is huge; all the appliances can be
controlled in a smart home system using some centralized controlling device. The user needs some kind
of user interface to control these controllable appliances and when there are many different kinds of
appliances to control the user interface of the controlling device might be very difficult to use.

Report On Individual Appliances:

In here, we will highlight and discuss the features and functionalities of the different appliances
we wish to make up our smart home system.

Home theatre:

We are using the VizioVSB210WS 2.1 Channel home theatre for this design. The system combines a
main unit that houses a 2 channel speaker/amplifier, with a wireless subwoofer, making it a 2.1 channel
system. The Sub receives audio signals from the main unit without the need for an unsightly audio cable.

It’s got the following features that help it stand as a very good home theatre and these are highlighted
below:

• Home Theater System with 2-channel sound bar and wireless subwoofer.

• Sound Bar Amplification: 2 channel Integrated Class-D with 15 watts x 2 output and .01% THD
(Total Harmonic Distortion).

• Sound Bar Speakers: 4 x 3" High Efficiency mid/bass transducers and 2 x 3/4" Aluminum Dome
Tweeters.

• Sound Bar Frequency Response: 80Hz - 20KHZ; Subwoofer Frequency Response: 35 - 80Hz.

Security Doors:

BTECH 2306 Page 4

[SMART HOME SYSTEM ] October 25, 2009

Our security doors are multi-equipped to ensure maximal security in our house. There are basically two
doors (entry and exit) in our house and they are equipped with the following:

Biometric Security System: Biometric security system is installed to provide high level security measure
for restricting door access. Biometric security system uses various methods for authentication. Under this
system, the information specific to an individual's body is used to ensure a high degree of security, which
will make it difficult or rather impossible for a stranger to impersonate that person. The technology utilizes
features like face, hand shape, the voice, fingerprints, and the iris.

Our biometric security system has got the following characters, which contribute largely to its strength and
reliability.

• Difficulty of forgery

• Swiftness in acquiring biological data

• Level of false-acceptance rate

Burglar Alarm:

Burglar alarms are used for keeping the home, offices or other buildings safe from intruders or burglars.
They are in fact most advanced home security system that keeps the burglar away from your residence or
offices. Our burglar alarm is directly linked to our biometric system, so that on false validation by the
biometric system, the alarm triggers.

There are sensors in the burglar alarms that are connected to a control unit. Sensors are connected
through both low-voltage hardwire or a narrow band RF signal. This is further connected to the device that
raises the alarm to evoke some response. Security sensors are the commonly used burglar alarm which
can detect movement through passive infrared and actuate the alarm.

Lights:

Lights are symbolic of celebration, life and entertainment and are more appreciated when it sets the right
ambience. A beautifully lit up house, pool, garden or business area always stands out at events, parties
and important celebrations. Our LED Lighting for the Home, Pool, Garden or Business helps you set the
mood to a more unique standard.

We have in our smart house, LED and fluorescent lightings, and these are of various capacities and
specifications. For example, the security lights at the security doors have greater voltage because of their
halogen contents, while the indoor lights have lesser voltage, in order to avoid excess heat, while we light
our house.

 SMART HOME SYSTEM RESEARCH

REPORT ON SMART HOME TECHNOLOGIES USED TODAY

Home automation has come a long way from the manual timer hooked up to the living room light. Today’s
"smart" home automatically regulates heat, air and light, distributes audio and video around the house,
controls access to your home and can even remind you to exercise!

New technologies and product advances have made home technology systems more affordable than ever
and have brought home systems integration into the mainstream. According to a study done in 2004 by
the National Association of Home Builders Research Center and the Consumer Electronics Association,
nearly half of all new homes being built in the U.S. are now using structured copper “smart” wiring to
enable the installation of new home technology systems.

How it Works
There are four main types of networks you can install in your home to support the available new
technology. Each has its advantages and disadvantages depending on whether you are wiring a new
home or upgrading an existing home.

• Structured wiring involves running specialized high performance cabling throughout your home.
It provides a highly reliable and secure network that distributes data signals for phones,
computers, TVs and audio components. It’s ideal for new construction but not always easy to
install in an existing home. Also, networking is limited to the reach of cables, jacks and plugs.
• Wireless networks provide the advantages of flexibility and mobility and virtually eliminate the
wiring dilemmas often faced by existing homeowners. However, wireless networks tend to be less
reliable and subject to interference from other devices such as baby monitors and cordless
phones.
• Power-line networks use a home’s existing electrical lines to transmit data. They are relatively
easy to set up and operate but carry the risk of power surges, and an unencrypted household
network may be accessible to neighbors sharing the same transformer.
• Phone-line networks use a home’s telephone lines to carry multiple services. Typically, each
service is assigned a unique frequency spectrum so they don’t interfere with one another. Smart
home technology may also enable you to dial in via a phone line to control specific home

BTECH 2306 Page 16

[SMART HOME SYSTEM ] October 25, 2009

operating systems and/or be pre-set to dial out to a monitoring service in the case of a fire or
break-in.

Other Technologies Include:

• Bluetooth technology: Blue tooth technology is one of the main types of smart home technology
which are now in place. The technology is made up of a set of protocols for the design of systems
that allow radio frequency control over the system. In this technology normally the USB Bluetooth
at the PC side and a Serial Bluetooth converter is used at the microcontroller side.

For instant there is the ECKey EK2 Virtual Keypad which allows you to use a Bluetooth-Enabled
phone or PDA as a key to lock and unlock almost any electronically controlled access control
device such as a door lock, gate, and alarm or garage door. The ECKey is a Bluetooth based
electronic relay unit that installs next to your electronic lock. This makes life much easier because
by leaving your phone’s Bluetooth setting in Discovery mode, the ECKey will detect your phone
when you walk into range which is normally adjustable from three feet to 30 feet. When the
presence of your phone is detected, the ECKey will then send a message requiring your PIN
number for authentication and upon confirmation it will unlock the door, open the gate or disable
your alarm. An unlimited number of Bluetooth-enabled devices can be registered, so it will work
for the whole family and no software is required on the phone or PC. The ECKey EK2 Bluetooth-
enabled Virtual Keypad Access Control System and does NOT come with a power supply. The
most common application for the ECKey EK2 Virtual keypad is as an access control system for
door locks. At present this technology is still in its infancy but is likely to become the leader once
the substantive problems are ironed out.

• Bus line-based technology: Bus line technology is a type of technology which mainly involves
the use of a cable which is either soft wired or hardwired into the home. In here the data is
transferred through the cable to the devices hence enabling the devices to communicate with
each other. With the use of these cables it means that the devices are independent of
conventional mains borne power supplies.

Bus line has been proven to be the most effective and reliable form of smart home, as it can be
configured to prevent devices from malfunctioning during power cuts. The two-way protocols also
allow the system to monitor devices without recourse to external computerized systems.

BTECH 2306 Page 17

[SMART HOME SYSTEM ] October 25, 2009

Bus line systems are generally ideal for disability engineering and design for homes because
within the field of bus line there are a number of companies who are involved in the production of
the system and many different protocols which are involved within the field are CE Bus, EIB and
Lon Works. It has been discovered that many companies nowadays are now developing Power
line equivalents from all over the world, although the reliability of Power line has not been
substantiated for use within housing for people with disabilities. So power line systems are made
of devices that can be connected directly into main power supply.

• X-10 technology: X10 is a communications language that allows compatible products to talk to
each other using the existing electrical wiring in the home. This smart home technology is
regarded as the most common and accessible form of smart home technology. This technology is
computer centered and in here devices are not being able to communicate with each other. And
therefore devices communicating using the X10 protocol can then be controlled by your Linux
system. This brings sprinklers and timers, thermostats, humidity sensors, motion sensors,
security gates, security cameras, many cams, lighting ,ore especially simulated home occupation,
home theaters to be under the control of your Linux computer. The only thing that the device does
is to receive its instructions from the computer which will usually be running one of the many
packages for home automation. Generally this type of technology is normally considered not to be
suitable for use with people with disabilities as it does not have the level of reliability that the field
bus systems have. X10 networks have limited range, are insecure because there is no encryption
and may be susceptible to electrical noise. The network is required to all be on the same 2
phases of a 3 phase input circuit which enters the house typical. There are also some software
packages which are designed specifically for people with disabilities but any system that relies on
a computer is always as weak as the computer itself. And by so doing, a number of systems have
been designed and installed do you X10 protocols for isolated devices with specific functions.

REPORT ON DEVICES DIFFERENT CONTAINED IN A SMART HOME

While the possibilities for home automation are only limited by your imagination, the choices facing the
average homeowner may seem daunting. The good news is that you do not need to become a
technological expert in order to enhance your home’s capabilities. A home technology integrator can
design, implement, and tie together your home’s various electronic systems. These include:

Entertainment:

Using fairly simple automation technology, one could push a “movie” button on a touch pad in your family
room. The lights would dim, the blinds would close, the popcorn maker would spring into action, the fridge
would check for adequate ice levels for your soda, and your calls would be automatically forwarded

BTECH 2306 Page 18

[SMART HOME SYSTEM ] October 25, 2009

straight to your answering service. With a little creativity and planning, all these events can be achieved
using a home network.

It would be equally simple, using motion sensors and your stereo system, to play music every time you
enter a room in your home -- something upbeat, perhaps, for the home gym, maybe classical music for
your study -- the possibilities are endless. Or one could sit in his living room and select the music he want
to listen to via on-screen menus that are displayed on your TV.

One could even monitor his children’s television and video-game habits, when he’s not at home by
programming the network to alert his cell phone if your children watch too much television or
inappropriate programming.

Security:

Using smart home automation technology, you can program your lights to simulate normal in-home
activity when you’re away. For example, sometime around your regular bedtime, your bedroom lights and
TV will turn on while the rest of the house will be darkened. And this lighting routine can be set up to
change on the weekend.

To protect against break-ins, you can position web cams at home entrances and install an alarm system
that uses heat and motion sensors to alert you and a remote security company in the case of an intruder.

In the case of fire, your smoke detector can be wired to sound not just an alarm but also to send a signal
to your air-conditioning system fans to shut down, alert you and specified contacts and illuminate an
evacuation route throughout the house.

Energy:

Energy savings can be realized by automating thermostats, lights and other environmental systems such
as garden sprinklers and fountains. Integrating all of these into one environmental system can help
ensure a minimum waste of energy in your home. For example, on a hot, sunny day, weather sensors can
activate blind and drapery controls to shade your home, and ensure that your garden receives adequate
irrigation at the right time of day. Motion and occupancy sensors can activate heat and lighting controls as
you enter and exit rooms.

When you leave for work in the morning, your house could “check” for and turn off unnecessary energy
consumers such as radios, TVs, stoves and irons (a nice safety feature). On your way home, you could
use your cell phone or computer to change the temperature in your home, turn on lights, turn on the
radiant heat in your bathroom floor and fill the bathtub to just the right level for a nice long soak.

BTECH 2306 Page 19

[SMART HOME SYSTEM ] October 25, 2009

Appliances:

From toasters to fridges to picture frames, the possibilities for networking computerized household
appliances are limited only by your imagination and budget. Your refrigerator can keep track of food
expiration dates and act as a family message center via a built-in screen. Coffee makers and other small
appliances (such as toasters) can be activated remotely or as part of a sequence of events. You can even
imitate Bill Gates and install framed electronic artwork that changes depending on the preference of the
person who enters a room, or purchase Internet-connected picture frames that retrieve images from a
gallery supplied by your friends and family for a constantly updated family portrait wall.

ANALYSIS ON CONVERSION OF AN ORDINARY HOME TO A SMART HOME

Central Computer
A smart house is basically a network of appliances, light switches and various assorted items
communicating together so that the house will operate a lot more efficiently, and smoothly. To run this
network a computer is required. In many cases this is a separate computer that is used as only the
network controller but there are several designs where a personal computer can be used for this purpose.
The owner of the home can then access this computer either through an interface in the house, remotely,
or by directly accessing the computer, and turn on all of the lights, close the window blinds, and many
other tasks. The computer does this by taking advantage of the special wiring that is installed in a smart
house.
Special Wiring
The house of today is wired very simply, the switch is connected to the light bulb or appliance by a wire
and the signal is sent through the wire when the switch is toggled. The diagram below is a very simple
illustration of this type of wiring.
In the smart home the switch takes on a much different function. Instead of electronically “telling” the light
bulb to turn on it passes a signal to the central bus system. A bus is “is a dedicated wiring system
installed purely for the purposes of distributing information.” The bus will then propagate this signal along
the network to controllers that are hooked up to a light fitting, or an appliance. This controller will either
ignore the signal or recognize that it is meant for it and will respond in the correct manner; in the case of
the light bulb it would send enough electricity to turn it on. The diagrams below show how this is set up.
The bottom diagram has it set up so that all of the 4 things are using the same controller, which is
possible, it will just have to be a little smarter and be able to understand more complex signals.
The bus will not only allow the switches to send signals but it will also allow the appliances to send signals
to the other appliances that will make them do certain things. For example, the alarm clock is plugged into
to an outlet that is hooked up to the bus. When it goes off it could send a signal through the bus that
would tell the coffee machine (also connected to the bus) to start making coffee.
Parts of a Smart House

BTECH 2306 Page 20

[SMART HOME SYSTEM ] October 25, 2009

Once a house has a central computer and the special wiring it has the capability to be a smart house.
However, the house is not really “smart” until it becomes automated, either fully, or partially. There are
several different things that a house can have automated. The most important of these are: energy
management, lighting, security, appliances, emergency management, and entertainment.

Energy Management
One of the most interesting aspects of a smart home is that it is, or can be very energy efficient, and is
very good at managing the energy used throughout the whole house. It does this by monitoring the usage
and also the number of people in the house. If no one is around then the house will lower the temperature
setting and will turn off appliances or lights that will not be used, and are not needed. It can also manage
the heaters, air conditioners and fans in such a way that will save energy. For example, if the temperature
outside is only slightly more than the setting on the thermostat then the house can use the fans, instead of
the air conditioner, which uses much more energy.
Another way that the smart house saves energy is the fact that it can completely turn energy off to an
outlet, if it is not in use. So if the TV is not in use then the house will turn the energy off to it, which will
save a small amount of energy, which over time could end up saving a lot of money.
Lighting
With a smart home there are several options that home owner can take that will improve the lighting in a
house. Several of these options will make the house safer and easier to live in.
Programmable Lights
With a smart house the owner is able to program the lights to come on at certain times, or even dim them
to match their mood. This is especially useful in terms of security. The owner can use the central
computer and set certain lights to come on at seemingly random times during the night and stay on for a
little while. This could be a major deterrent to criminals.
Remote Access
One of the best things about a smart house is that the owner will be able to remotely control all of the
lights in the house. For example, the owner could be sitting in the living room and suddenly remember
that the lights in the kitchen were left on. They could pull out a PDA, or telephone and turn the lights off.
This could even be done outside the home such as at a restaurant or at work.
Security
A house can be very valuable and often hard to protect, leading to a lot of breakins every year. However,
a smart home is much more secure and offers many features that the current houses on the market do
not. A smart home can use an alarm system that is very similar to the current car alarms. With a single
push of a button, the house would enter “security mode” and all windows and doors would be closed and
locked, and the security system turned on. This system while mostly used for single day uses could also
be programmed for long trips. The owner can set it to open the curtains, turn on and off the lights, and
basically make it look like someone is still living there. This system could then be turned off again by

BTECH 2306 Page 21

[SMART HOME SYSTEM ] October 25, 2009

pushing the same button when the owner arrives home. Another possible part of the security system is
hidden surveillance cameras around the home. These can be checked by using an Internet connection
and will allow the owner to check on pretty much every aspect of their home, and will let them know when
a burglar enters or if the cat is “ruining” the furniture again, and then they can take appropriate actions.

Smart Appliances
One of the key components of a smart home are smart appliances. These appliances will be able to
perform tasks that are not within their current job description, and all of this will be done using networking
and the bus that the smart home provides.
For example, the coffeemaker can brew a pot of coffee before the owner even gets out of bed, the
dishwasher has a sensor that knows how dirty the dishes are, and can select the appropriate cycle to
clean them. By pushing a button, the refrigerator can adjust the temperature to the correct level based on
the food within.
How Smart Appliances Work
Smart appliances use mostly embedded circuitry and standard household lines or wireless technology to
communicate. Using this circuitry the items, —a coffeemaker, electric blanket, smoke detector, mixer, etc.
—automatically network and communicate with each other when they are plugged in. All of the smart
appliances are connected to a bus, which is what drives the communication of the network. The bus will
allow the central computer or owner to turn on or off the devices, but it also allows the devices to turn
each other on or off. For example, the alarm clock could tell the coffee machine to start up 10 minutes
before it woke up, or if the fire alarm goes off, the alarm clock could go off as well in order to wake the
owner up.
Emergency Management
An emergency can be in many forms; often the family is confused and does not know what to do. A smart
house can inform the family about what the emergency is and then contact the proper authorities and let
them know that something is wrong. There are two examples that show the capabilities of a smart house
in an emergency. The first is if there is a fire. The fire alarm would go off and the house would
immediately call the fire department and inform them that there is a fire. Then it would turn on the lights
that lead to an exit and unlock all the doors and windows, which would make it much easier for the family
to escape. The second example is if there is a gas leak of some kind. The house could detect this and
immediately shut down the gas main and disable all electronic devices so that a spark would not be
generated accidentally, then the house would sound an alarm to let the family know about the leak. In
some more advanced versions of smart houses, ones that have voice automation, the house could tell the
family what is going on and inform them of what to do.

While offering very little of real value, one of the first things that homeowners automate in the home
usually has something to do with entertainment. Often this is in the form of a home theater system or a
network of computers. While this doesn’t really make life any easier having an awe inspiring home theater
system is something that many people really look forward to. This could include allowing the user to
change channels by speaking, improved recording capabilities, and the ability to use the Internet in
conjunction with the TV.
