Abstract
Cassava (manihot utilissima) is the raw material for various industrial products such
as food, pharmaceuticals, textiles and others. Cassava food industry is quite diverse one of
which is the tapioca industry. The tapioca industry in Indonesia are located in different areas
within a huge potential, for example in the area of Pati, Batang, Temanggung, Wonosobo, and
D.I. Yogyakarta. Tapioca is one commodity that will continue to grow. But in addition to the
positive impact that a negative impact of environmental pollution caused by waste water from
the industrial starch. Tapioca industrial waste water still contains BOD, COD, and cyanide
are quite high, above the threshold requirements of industrial waste water are permitted.
Technology AOP (Advanced Oxidation Processes) based H2O2 as Fenton process that has
been proven to reduce the concentration of some organic compounds in wastewater. It has
been proven that irradiation of Fe (II) + H 2O2, also called photo-Fenton reaction can increase
the rate of reaction of the oxidant production.
The experimental procedure begins with charging the reactor cylindrical UV light
system equipped with a cooling water jacket with 0.85 liters of wastewater. Then set up
independently of 0.85 liters of waste water is mixed with iron salts and hydrogen peroxide.
The initial time trial held in conjunction with the injection of hydrogen peroxide and the
addition of iron salts. The amount of reagent FeSO4.7H2O and H2O2 homogenized with a
magnetic stirrer and irradiated by UV lamp. The results of the process then poured and
deposited in a glass beaker, then filtered to separate the mud that has been deposited. Samples
were diluted 30 times with the addition of distilled water, 2.5 ml sample was taken into a
glass test tube, and then the two reagents potassium dichromate (1.5 ml) and sulfuric acid (3.5
ml) was added. The samples were then included in the COD reactor for 2 hours at 150 C, then
cooled for 30 minutes and measured with a meter to determine the COD removal efficiency
of organic matter.
By doing this research can determine alternative methods of waste treatment in terms
of the degradation of organic pollutants in industrial waste starch.
