THE MAKING OF DR SANDEEP KAPOOR

Like any other aspirant of the medical profession, Sandeep Kapoor

opted for the rigor of an all India entrance examination and earned a
place in the prestigious King George Medical College, Lucknow.
It was the year of 1988 when Kapoor realized his dream and took oath
as a doctor and altered his status and his life forever. In keeping with
the traditions and demands of the medical science, Dr Kapoor
furthered his cause with a Post Graduation in Orthopaedic Surgery, also
from KGMU, Lucknow.
Dr. Kapoor's endeavors at KGMU came with an appreciation certificate
and a gold medal as a best student award.
FIRST STEP: Holy Family, New Delhi and King Fahd Central Hospital,
Saudi Arabia
Dr. Sandeep Kapoor joined Holy Family Hospital, Delhi as a Registrar.
The year was 1993, Dr. Kapoor's learning and expertise not
withstanding, he was hand picked by the government of Saudi Arabia
to be part of the Orthopaedic team at King Fahd Central Hospital. It
was a tertiary referral care centre and the team was lead by a
Nigerian, Dr. Olusanya, FRCS.
HOMEWARD BOUND: Vivekanand Polyclinic Institute of Medical
Sciences, [VPIMS] Lucknow
Home sick and devoid of fresh challenges, Dr Sandeep Kapoor returned
to his roots and joined VPIMS with almost a non-functional Orthopaedic
department and defunct equipments. Dr Kapoor shook the system and
went to work with zeal and determination. As Head of Ortopaedics,
equipments and expert hands were added to the department and the
doctor's team went to work for the masses.
BREAKTHROUGH: First Knee Implant
Dr Kapoor's hard work paid off and in the dawn of the new millennium,
he performed the hospital's first knee transplant. Thus began a journey
that opened vistas for excellence and innovation.
There was an upswing in the hospital's operations as methodical
systems took over. There was no looking back. In 2002, Dr Kapoor held
an invitational seminar on joint replacements and performed the first

live knee implant in the august gathering of surgeons from Chennai

and Delhi.
ACADEMIC PUSH: Fellowships and Training Programmes
With the Orthopaedic Department firmly established and functioning as
a well oiled machinery, Dr Kapoor took to academic pursuits in order to
raise the bar of standards a few notches. In the year of 2002, he
acquired the prestigious Fellowship in Trauma Surgery from Mainz,
Germany. It was an eight weeks training program in Complex Fracture
Fixation under the expert mentorship of Prof. P.M. Rommens, a master
surgeon.
The year of 2002 also saw Dr Kapoor's participation in the Sumit of
Fellows in Trauma Surgery at the centre of excellence, Davos,
Switzerland.
Asia Pacific Joint Replacement Fellowship from Royal Adelaide Hospital,
Australia in the year 2005 brought Dr Kapoor at par with the best
Surgeons in Hip Replacement from around the globe. He became the
proud and privileged pupil of Dr Don Howie, the famous Designer
Surgeon who remains a living legend in Hip Replacement procedures.
Dr Howie's self designed implants are used around the world.
TURNING POINT: Computer Navigated Procedures
It was at a meet of Orthopaedic Surgeons in Goa that Dr Kapoor had a
previledged interaction with Dr Ranawat, the renowned surgeon who
operated both the knees of our Ex Prime Minister, Sri Atal Behari
Vajpayee. Dr Ranawat in all his wisdom drew his interest towards the
urgent need to upgrade the surgery skills by aligning with Computer
Navigated Procedures.
A determined Dr Kapoor took upon his shoulders the task of organizing
and establishing ultra modern machinery and practices that had never
been attempted or even thought about.
Dr Kapoor's initiative bore fruit and in the summer of 2006 he joined
the Royal Australasian Hospital, for masters in the domain of Computer
Navigation Surgery.
Post his masters, he augmented his skills under the able tutelage of
veteran, Dr Ray Randle, the highest authority in Joint Replacement
Surgery using Computer Navigation. Thus Dr Kapoor added the feather
of this pathbreaking technique to his cap.

Not the one to give up, he has been instrumental in getting the first of
its kind equipment and technique to not just city of Lucknow, but to the
entire region of Northern India. He wowed the medical fraternity in his
endeavour, for such advanced technology was not available even in
the premium AIIMS, New Delhi.
EXCHANGE PROGRAMMES:
A defining practice that has been part of the armoury of Dr Sandeep
Kapoor has been the exchange programmes that he initiated more
than a decade earlier.
Under the Exchange Programme a surgeon from a centre of excellence
from across the globe is invited to spend time and share his skills and
practices with the Orthopaedic team here in Lucknow. In the reverse
mode, a team member reciprocates the practice.
The two-way flow of information, synergy and techniques enriches
learning and ensures medical science is abreast with the latest and the
best.
MENTORSHIP:
Besides the great academic push by Dr Kapoor in between 2002 and
2006-7, he donned the hat of a mentor. As a consequence, he took
upon himself the dual responsibility of training and mentoring his
colleagues and juniors without any geographical constraints.
The year was 2005 when Dr Kapoor's role as a mentor/faculty began.
This led to him organizing or being part of, as a faculty member,
various programmes, seminars, workshops and clinics. Dr Kapoor's role
as a mentor continues till date, which speaks volumes about his
commitment to the medical science.
OTHER CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE:
Never to sit on the laurels, Dr Kapoor has continued to add learnings
and expertise from various centres of excellence from across the globe,
chiefly in, Singapore, Thailand, Germany, USA, UK and other SE Asian
parts working and training in Cadaveric Laboratories.
Dr Kapoor completed his Masters in Trauma Surgery from Davos,
Switzerland as recently as 2014. He is also Member, AO Trauma India.

TRANSITIONAL PHASE: Sahara Hospital and Forrd Hospital

Dr Kapoor considers the period between 2010 and 2015 as a
transitional period in his medical career. With each expertise acquired
and with each surgical procedure performed Dr Kapoor and his team
came that much closer to the vision of putting the city of Lucknow on
the global map of excellence in Orthopaedic care. Sahara Hospital,
initially and Forrd Hospital, later, became the corner stones for Dr
Kapoor in honing his skills and keeping his dream alive.
Dr Kapoor served the Orthopaedic Departments of both Sahara and
Forrd Hospitals with diligent care and nursed the dream of starting his
own Tertiary Care Centre.
In all his responsibilities as Head of Orthopaedics starting with VPIMS,
then with Sahara and later with Forrd Hospital, Dr Kapoor managed the
systems as they existed in the institutions. He never let the limiting
factors like outdated equipments and facilities in any way hamper his
deliverance. He consistently fought his way against traditional
management attitudes of being non-responsive towards dynamism, up
gradation and modernization. Ultimately in all the cases, the glaring
lethargy became the primary reason for Dr Kapoor to migrate from one
institute to the next, of course, with a hope.
A DREAM IS BORN: Health City Hospital, Lucknow
The January 18th of 2016 acquired a gold letter hue when a Tertiary
Care Centre, the Health City Hospital was formally declared open to the
public by Sri Akhilesh Singh Yadav, Chief Minister, Uttar Pradesh. The
hundred bed Multi Speciality hospital is a beginning of a dream that
foresees service and care for patients from both India and abroad.
