EDTORIAL

KRISHNA PHILOSOPHY OF "I"

Hindu philosophy professes about incarnation of God in various forms. Lord Krishna,
the incarnation of Lord Vishnu prior to the beginning of Kali Yuga has time and again said
"I" am the doer and "I" am the enjoyer, leave everything to me or total surrender to me.
Normally when we say 'I' then it means me or my inner arrogance (Ahamkara). But Krishna
meant from darkness to light, from (Agyan to Gyan) illiteracy to knowledge which enriches
bliss of life. When Krishna says "I" it means Cosmos (Brahmand). In every creature of this
Cosmos in one or the other way Krishna or God is in it whether living beings or still like
mountains, earth etc. We can say all creatures of this Cosmos can be narrated as different
forms of God's existence.
We get illusions when we see the historical narration of Krishna right from his birth.
He was born in jail and ended up his life by a simple Bheel's arrow. During his stay in Nand
Baba and Mother Yashoda's parenting, he looked too simple as other children, playing with
normal village children. But time and again unlike other incarnations he showed through his
Leela that he is extra ordinary than the others. He started imparting education to everyone
there. Even stealing butter gave a message that why he should give the King Kans which the
children deserve and King has no right to take away the rights of the children. He while
playing with young girls known as Gopis gave a message of worshipping God with total
surrender and not fall in the ways suggested by the then Brahmins. Krishna while dancing
with Gopis gave a true message of surrendering oneself. During his childhood he killed so
many demons sent by Kans which was a clear indication to Kans that he is incarnation of
Lord Vishnu and gave ample chance to him to improve and go on the path of righteousness.
After killing Kans he fought battles with other neighboring Kings.
Krishna took his education in the Gurukul of Guru Sandeepan along with his elder
brother Balram where he met his course mates like Sudama. While staying in Gurukul as a
truthful student learnt the basics of spirituality and other sciences. Guru Sandeepan later is
known as the Guru of Rishi Patanjali also who created Patanjali Yog Sutra prevalent today
also. This was also one of the jobs done by Krishna for the benefit of mankind till His
existence on this Cosmos.
Krishna's biggest message to the human being is shifting his Capital from Mathura to
Dwarka. Krishna said if we can avoid war while remaining away from the enemy we should
do that also. He was designated as Ranchchor (who leaves the battle).
The biggest message was Gita given to Arjun in the battlefield of Mahabharat. Without
taking up arms he ensured elimination of all bad elements from this earth and worked for
DharamSthapana means establishing a kingdom of Bharat in the right hands. Gita is a message
to the world which will be applicable in all times to come.
To sum up, the true worship of Krishna is to follow his teachings. In the incarnation of
Lord Vishnu he symbolically said about the human body, nervous system, Yog, forgiveness,
teaching lessons to wrong doers and establishing a rightful kingdom on the earth.
According to my sense of understanding the earth should be preserved and anybody
trying to imbalance the nature after due counseling should be eliminated for the betterment
and preservation of nature.

50 MOST INSPIRING QUOTES FROM THE BHAGAVAD GITA

When Arjuna was faced with the dilemma of going to
battle with his own relatives, teachers and acquaintances,
he turned to Krishna for advice. The ensuing monologue
where Krishna enunciated the philosophy of life is recorded
in the ancient scripture of Bhagavad Gita. In an age where
one continuously witnesses the violence committed in the
name of religion, the preaching in the timeless text expound
the true meaning of religion and faith. It elucidates that
selfless service is the true devotion to the almighty. The
message contained in the text applies to the entire human
race as it urges one to expunge the quest of mortal gains
and strive for wisdom. While the religious pundits create a
fear of the almighty in the minds of their followers,
Bhagavad Gita teaches one to dispel all fears and pursue
their Karma with utmost sincerity. This collection of
inspiring quotes borrowed from the eternal text that contains
the teachings of Lord Krishna is meant to lead one towards
their actual goal. As the deity himself said, "I give you these
precious words of wisdom; reflect on them and then do as
you choose."

faith, I unify his faith in that. Then, when his faith
his completely unified, he gains the object of his
devotion.

11.

On this path effort never goes to waste, and there is

no failure. Even a little effort toward spiritual
awareness will protect you from the greatest fear.

12.

We are kept from our goal, not by obstacles, but by a

clear path to a lesser goal.

Strive constantly to serve the welfare of the world;

by devotion to selfless work one attains the supreme
goal of life. Do your work with the welfare of others
always in mind.

13.

It is better to perform one's own duties imperfectly

than to master the duties of another.

As the heat of a fire reduces wood to ashes, the fire

of knowledge burns to ashes all karma.

14.

Those who renounce attachment in all their deeds

live content in the "city of nine gates," the body, as
its master. They are not driven to act, nor do they
involve others in action. Those who surrender to
Brahman all selfish attachments are like the leaf of a
lotus floating clean and dry in water. Sin cannot touch
them. Those who possess this wisdom have equal
regard for all. They see the same Self in a spiritual
aspirant and an outcaste, in an elephant, a cow, and a
dog.

15.

Free from anger and selfish desire, unified in mind,

those who follow the path of yoga and realize the
Self are established forever in that supreme state.

16.

No one who does good work will ever come to a bad

end, either here or in the world to come.

17.

A gift is pure when it is given from the heart to the

right person at the right time and at the right place,
and when we expect nothing in return.

18.

It is Nature that causes all movement. Deluded by

the ego, the fool harbors the perception that says "I
did it".

3.

No one should abandon duties because he sees defects

in them. Every action, every activity, is surrounded
by defects as a fire is surrounded by smoke.

4.

Reshape yourself through the power of your will

Those who have conquered themselveslive in
peace, alike in cold and heat, pleasure and pain, praise
and blameTo such people a clod of dirt, a stone,
and gold are the sameBecause they are impartial,
they rise to great heights.

6.
7.

It is better to strive in one's own dharma than to

succeed in the dharma of another. Nothing is ever
lost in following one's own dharma. But competition
in another's dharma breeds fear and insecurity. By
fulfilling the obligations he is born with, a person
never comes to grief.
Abandon all attachment to the results of action and
attain supreme peace.

too much or sleep too little, will not succeed in

Those who are motivated only by desire for the fruits

STRANGE LEELAS OF SHRI KRISHNA

Krishna, the Poorna Avatar
Lord Krishna is known for many things in Hinduism;
he is the absolute, accomplished, wise ruler, mentor, warrior,
friend, lover and confidant. Like lord Rama, he is a poorna
avatar. Lord Krishna is one of the most favoured deities in
Hinduism. Let us explore some strange and unknown facts
about him here...
Birth of Krishna
Born to Devki and Vasudeva, raised by Yashoda,
Krishna was born under the Rohini Nakshatra.
Krishna's Gurudakshina
As the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Krishna brought
back the son of his Guru, Sandipani from death. This was
his guru dakshina to his teacher.
Krishna and his seven brothers
Krishna was the eighth child of Devki and Vasudev
(Balaram was the seventh and he was saved when
transferred into Vasudev's second wife, Rohini's womb).
He brought all the six dead children, namely Parishvanga,
Patanga, Ghrini, Kshudrabhrit, Udgitha and Smara, back
to life.
Why Kansa killed Devki's children?
In his previous birth, King Kansa was Kalanemi and
was killed by Lord Vishnu. The six sons of Devki killed by

who had
killed Bali
and
had
promised
Tara, Bali's
widow, that
Bali would
get
his
revenge in
his
next
birth. In his
next life,
Bali was
born as Jara the hunter and he shot an arrow at Krishna
that ended his life on earth.
Who was Radha?
Unfortunately, as we continue to pray to RadhaKrishna together, there is no mention of Radha in the
scriptures. She has no mention in the Mahabharata as well
as Bhagwad Gita.
Eklavya reborn as Dhristadyumna
The story of Eklavya is famous but what is unknown
is that he was actually Krishna's own cousin. He was born
to Devashrava, brother of Vasudev who was raised by
Nishad Hiranyadhanu when he got lost in the forest.
Eklavya lost his life to protect his father during the Rukmini
Swayamwar and it was Krishna who killed him. However,
due to his great deeds, he was blessed by Krishna that would
avenge his death in the next life and kill Drona. He did so
as Dhristadyumna.
How Krishna shocked Lord Shiva?
The wise lord Krishna was a difficult personality. No
one could understand him completely. When Krishna
started a fight with Arjuna, it perturbed Lord Shiva greatly,
so much so that he appeared before them and demanded to
know what was happening. To this, Lord Krishna replied
that Arjuna had to prepare for a battle which he had to win
and therefore, he was testing Arjuna.
Was Krishna Kunti's nephew?
Did you know, Shri Krishna was actually related to
the Pandavas? He was related to them through Kunti who
was Vasudev's sister.
Krishna and his many, many children!
Lord Krishna had 8 patranis (queens) as they were
known. However, he had 16100 wives as well, making that
a total of 16108. It is said that with each of his patranis, he
had 10 sons. Hence, he had 80 sons in all!

Kansa were Kalanemi's sons in his earlier birth. Due to a

curse by Hiranykashyap that Kalanemi's sons would die at
the hands of their father, Kansa killed these six newborn
babies.
Did Krishna really die?
Did Shri Krishna die or he simply chose to leave earth?
As per the epic of Mahabharata, Gandhari had cursed
Krishna. Lord Rama was an earlier incarnation of Krishna,

NATURAL REMEDIES FOR OPTIMIZING IMMUNE ACTIVITY

Amla, Emblica officinalis, is one of the more popular
Rasayana; indicating that he herb has a general benefit to
health. This effect is translated to enhancement of Prana,
Tejas, and Ojas. Amla has been used as part of a traditional
formula called Chyavanprash for over 2000 years. Amla is
a very useful anti-oxidant and liver supportive herb.
Antioxidant function of this herb also has a regenerative
effect on the immune system. It has been observed to protect
liver damage due to toxins and protect development of liver
cancer. Liver is the primary detoxing organ of the body.
Optimal function of the liver reduces toxic burden, which
alleviates the burden of chronic toxicity and low-grade
inflammation that keep the immune system distracted from
its real job. Amla supports the immune system to deal with
real threats.
Ashwaganda, Withania somnifera, is an excellent
adrenal supportive herb that has tonifying effect on the
whole hormone system and another Rasayana.
Ashwagandha have been observed to reduce stress on the
adrenal gland and stimulate the thyroid gland activity. This
demonstrates the anti-stress activity and pro-metabolic
activity of Ashwagandha. It is a beneficial herb to balance
the quality of Tejas and Soma. Both of these reinforce
immune activity of the individual, indicated by the
mobilization and activation of immune cells. Ashwagandha
has also been observed to reverse immune-suppression
caused by steroid use. This herb is one of the best hormonal
and immune modulator offered by Ayurvedic tradition.
Turmeric, Curcuma longa, this common house-hold
spice is emerging as a miraculous anti-inflammatory agent.
While healthy, controlled inflammation is a part of a normal
immune response; excessive inflammation causes tissue
damage and depletion of the immune system. In a study on
Ebola victims, survivor's immune system was able to control
inflammation effectively; on the contrary, non-survivor's
had progressive inflammation that got worse as they got
closer to death. Turmeric contains the compound curcumin,
which is recognized for helping control inflammation as
effectively as aspirin (Non-Steroidal anti-inflammatory
drugs - NSAID). In animal studies, Curcumin has been
observed to be equal Ibuprofen for preventing inflammatory
plaque formation in Alzheimer disease. Curcumin does this
without the risk of toxicity seen with NSAIDs. Additionally,
Curcumin's effectiveness has been demonstrated in chronic
diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity and other
metabolic diseases.
Guduchi, Tinospora cordifolia, is a versatile herb
for supporting immune and liver function. Guduchi is
traditionally used in wide variety of conditions for its
combination of anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, immune

,LVkseSfVDl

modulating, liver supportive actions and is another

Rasayana herb. A review of research indicates that Guduchi
produces its anti-inflammatory effect through blocking the
effect of inflammatory signals like histamine, bradykinin,
etc. These actions are very useful for controlling nonspecific allergic reactivity of the innate immune system reducing burden on the immune system. In other words,
Guduchi helps to balance the Pitta dosha and enhance the
quality of Tejas in the individual. Immune supportive
activity of this herb is demonstrated in animal studies by
elevation and circulation of B-cell and T-cell lymphocytes,
which perform surveillance and elimination of infective
agents.Traditional use of this herb has been described in
wide range of ailments including: immune system, liver
support, anti-allergy, asthma, skin diseases, neurological
diseases, eye diseases, general debility, etc.
Neem, Azadirachta indica is a famous anti-microbial
herb of the Ayurvedic tradition. Medicinal compounds
found in neem oil and leaves stimulate various immune
cells to act against pathogens. This bitter herb is
traditionally used in topical treatment of Methicillinresistance Staphylococcus aureus, usually called MRSA
infections. Use of the herb as a mouth wash has proven
effective in eliminating streptococcal bacteria. Studies on
the properties of neem have demonstrated direct toxicity
against variety of fungus, bacteria, and viruses. Further
benefit of neem is derived from its capacity to lower blood
sugar. This is helpful because sugar is the main source of
sustenance for bacteria and fungus.
Holy Basil, Ocimum sactum another Rasayana, is
central to many ceremonial and religious activities in Indian
culture. This herb is considered the incarnation of the divine
feminine principle. It promotes mental and emotional
clarity, as well as creativity. In addition to the Spiritual
significance, the value of holy basil comes from its versatile
medicinal activities. It is rich in essential oils that have
beneficial effect on the nervous system, immune system
and the antioxidant system. The herb has been observed to
have anti-stress effect in animal studies. Further protective
effect on the brain has been shown to protect from memory
loss in Alzheimer's. Holy Basil has an anti-oxidant effect
that protects all organs of the body from gluco-toxic
oxidative damage.
It is very clear that balanced immune system is required
for optimal health. Immune system cannot be balanced with
a pill, herb, vitamin, drug or vaccine. Immune system can
only be balanced with good and balanced nutrition, exercise,
yoga, meditation, herbal and mineral support, along with
creating balance at mental, emotional and spiritual levels.
Balanced immune system is the basic tenet of " Disease
free Society."

"The man who sees me in everything

When he sees all being as equal

in suffering or in joy
because they are like himself,
that man has grown perfect in yoga."
The Bhagavad Gita

He who is rooted in oneness

realizes that I am
in every being; wherever
he goes, he remains in me.

"The happiness which comes from long practice, which

the serenity of one's own mind."

VASTU FOR FLATS

Vastu is the science of directions that combines all
the five elements of nature and balances them with the man
and the material. Vastu Shastra creates a congenial settings
or a place to live or work, in most scientific way taking
advantages of the benefits bestowed by the five elements
called "Panchbhootas" of the nature thereby paving the way
for enhanced health, wealth, prosperity and happiness in
an enlightened environment.
The architecture of flats should follow the guidelines
laid by Vastu Shashtra or it can have a damaging effect on
our lives. You can invite calamities in your life, if you chose
to ignore Vastu advice while building a flat for yourself.
Vastu helps to make your living comfortable in flats and
prevent illness and other dangers from creeping into your
life or relationships. This article brings some very important
guidelines to be kept in mind while planning the architecture

of a flat. Go through them and know the right Vasthu for

flats, to make your life happy and prosperous.
Vaastu Tips For Flat
According to Vaastu, the master bedrooms should be in
the southwest corner of the house. If the house has more
than one floor, then the master bedroom should be on
the topmost floor. The ceiling should be in level; as it
makes the energy of the room uniform and helps the
occupants keep a steady state of mind.

,LVkseSfVDl

15

The children's room should be constructed in the

northwest corner. No bedroom should be located in the
southwest direction.
The bathroom should be constructed in the west or south
direction and its drains should flow towards northeast.
The drawing room should be in northwest, south or west
direction. The furniture should be placed in south and
west directions. Maximum open space should be in
north and east directions.
The kitchen must be situated in the fire angle, i.e. in
southeast. The cook should face east while cooking.
The water tap in kitchen should be in the northeast
direction.
Northeast, northwest, north, west, east corners are best
for a study room. If the study room and place of worship
room are adjacent, then it is considered most favorable.
The store room should be constructed in the southern
part of the building. Grain
and other provisions can be
stored in the kitchen or in
other rooms and cupboards.
Things should not be stored
in box beds, because it causes
sleeping disorders.
Daily wastes from the
kitchen should be kept
covered in the southwest
corner of the kitchen.
The doors should be in
the north and east. The waves
emerging from the doors
affect the mind of a person
who enters from the door.
Guest room should be in
the northwest direction. The
room in this direction is also
considered suitable for
unmarried girls.
The rooms in the northern
part of the house should be
larger than the rooms in the southern side, by 6-9 inches,
and lower by 1-3 inches. The ideal height of the rooms
should be 12-14 feet. The main door should be larger
than the inner doors and all doors should open facing
the walls.
All windows should be, at least, 3 feet above ground
level, and at the same level from the top. Window
openings should be on the northern and eastern sides
of the buildings.

Yoga

Management of Back Pain

Swami Bhaktipoornananda Saraswati
If we know there is an unstable joint or a whole section in
the back that doesn't move from degeneration, then it is
important to take care when coming up from a forward
bend (standing or kneeling). Use the hands to 'walk' up the
legs and support the body so that it does not feel like it is
going to give way or go into spasm.
Backward bending: When we bend backwards the lumbar
spine takes the curve and the thoracic spine tends to flatten.
In most cases backward bends can assist in relieving
pressure on a disc. The exception comes when the lumbar
spine is already curved back and any extra bend pushes the
facet joints further into each other. This can lead to pain.
Twisting the spine : When we twist the body it is the
thoracic spine that twists most, not the lumbar spine. When
we have one leg shorter than the other we get a lot of wear
and tear on the junction between the 12th thoracic and the
1st lumbar vertebrae because the twist on the pelvis is
imbalanced as we walk. The lumbar spine does not turn
much so this lob-sidedness increases wear and tear on the
first vertebra designed to twist (i.e. 12th thoracic).
Meru wakrasana and ardha matsyendrasana are important
twisting practices which keep the whole spine supple
without straining ligaments. They should be practised
initially with one hand resting close to the sacrum and the
arm straight so that it lifts the back upright and supports it.
Sideways bending: The whole spine can bend to the side.
Inhibition comes from the muscles away from the spinal
column (latissimus dorsi and quadratus lumborum and
muscles in the sides of the trunk). When scoliosis occurs,
the major work needed comes from sideways bending. The
muscles that require strengthening are on the outside of
the curve and the muscles that require stretching are on the
inside of the curve.
The tendency in bending sideways is always to twist the
pelvis or the shoulders. We can help prevent this by
flattening the lower back and tucking the tailbone under
before doing postures like trikonasana variation 3 (triangle
sliding the hand down the side of the leg). Another way to
fix the pelvis so that it cannot rotate is either by squatting
against the wall, or by beginning in shashankasana (child
pose) and bending to the side. Tiryaka tadasana must be
practised with caution as the arms over the head provide
great leverage to each side especially in tall people.
(to be contd)

Contd. from previous issue

Postural correction standing
Practise relaxing in the standing position with correctly
aligned posture:
Bring the feet a few inches apart (10 cm) and parallel to
each other. Then bring the awareness into the soles of
the feet and gently rock backwards and forwards coming
up onto the toes and back onto the heels. Then return to
a standstill and feel the contact with the floor through
both feet. The body sways and the weight moves
forwards and back and left and right quite naturally. Be
grounded through the feet and allow them to take the
weight evenly.
Make sure that the knees are unlocked and pull up the
kneecaps. If they point in towards the centre then rotate
the thighs outwards and tighten the buttocks.
(The following exercise can also be practised in your
sitting posture). Now tilt the pelvis backwards and
forwards finding the balance so that the spine can grow
comfortably upwards out of the hips.
Bring the shoulders up and back, and let them go wide
with the arms hanging loosely.
Hold the head and neck upright so that the ears are above
the tops of the shoulders and the head feels lightly
balanced on top of the neck.
Imagine that a string is attached to the top of the head
and that someone is lifting the head up and out of the
shoulders. Feel how your posture alters when you 'let
go' of this imaginary string.
General notes
Forward bending: Pressure within a disc is at its lowest
when we are lying flat on our back. It is at its greatest when
we tip forwards and pass through 20 degrees from the
vertical. After that point it decreases again and we can curl
forward comfortably. It is at this 20 degree angle that an
unhealthy disc is likely to bulge or herniate (e.g. me putting
my trousers on!). As we bend the spine forwards 20% of
the bend comes from the joint between the 4th and 5th
lumbar vertebrae and 60-70% from the joint between the
5th lumbar and the sacrum. This makes this part of the
body highly at risk of being damaged.
Bending the spine forwards needs to be done with care as
it is risky when discs have deteriorated or been damaged.
