Panel Discussion
Monday, February 4, 2008
2:00p to 3:45p
John Zibrida, Chairman of the Water Treating
Committee is busy working with several of the
Cooling Technology Institutes members to prepare a panel discussion on the proper control of
cooling systems and its importance to thermal
and economic efficiency. Technological advances have improved the capability of control
of cooling water systems. The panel will examine the use of control technology from an engineering, operator,
instrumentation and supplier perspective. CTI has assembled industry experts in this field to present and review control technologies and advances in managerial and opertional tools, which have
improved the operation of thermal heat transfer systems.

Ancillary Equipment and Services Relating to Cooling Towers
The 2008 CTI education program will include 4 sessions on structural issues with cooling towers. We will
focus on lightning protection, fire protection, water treating and safety. The 4 - 1 hour sessions will be as
follows:
Lightning Protection in Cooling Towers presented by James F. Blake, Jr., of American Lightning Protection Systems,
Inc. - The selection of the correct materials and the installation and operation of lightning protection on cooling towers
will be presented. Highlights of existing deficiencies on past towers and some of the newer techniques found in todays
marketplace including issues revolving around safety will be reviewed and discussed as well.
James grew up in his hometown of Fort Worth, Texas, and is a third generation lightning protection installer with over 25
years in the lightning protection industry. He was educated at Texas Tech University and the University of Texas at
Arlington, and in 1982 earned the title of Certified Master Installer of Lightning Protection Systems fro the Lightning Protection Institute. James is currently Vice-President of American Lightning Protection Systems, Inc. where he primarily designs and manages the
installation of their systems across the United States and overseas. He is married with three children.
Fire Protection in Cooling Towers presented by Dave Schmidt, of SimplexGrinnell-LP - History of fire protection in
cooling towers and various sprinklers and nozzles will be presented. Various types of systems will be discussed in both
counter flow and cross flow cooling towers. Fire partition walls for multi cell towers will be reviewed and discussed
including NFPA 214 requirements in the discussion on various fire protection systems.
David W. Schmidt is a sales representative for SimplexGrinnell-International Group located in Cleveland, Ohio. Dave is
a 1972 graduate from the University of Akron, and holds a Bachelor of Mechanical Technology degree. He has been in
the fire protection business specifically the special Hazards field, for 34 years and is a principal member of the MFPA Technical Committee on Water Cooling Towers.
Water Treating in Cooling Towers presented by Dr. Mike Trulear,of ChemTreat, Inc. - Water treating in general will
be discussed relating to cooling towers. Various chemicals and water treating systems will be highlighted int he discussion as well as a review of the safety issues involved in water treating.
Director of Research and Laboratory Services, at ChemTreat, Inc., headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, Mike joined
ChemTreat in May 1995 and has over 25 years experience in Cooling Water and Water Treatment technology. Mike has
