FIRST METRO TRAVEL INC. is a full service travel agency that started its operation
in the Philippines in April 1969. It was originally a 60/40 partnership between
Smith Bell & Company, a local conglomerate, and the Thomas Cook Group of UK.
In June 1986, Metropolitan Bank & Trust Company, having acquired the 60% share
of Smith Bell & Company, entered into a joint venture agreement with Thomas
Cook Group and make available to Thomas Cook clients in the Philippines the
benefit of the partnership’s synergy. During this time, the company held the
distinction of being the official travel agent of three of the four biggest
organizations in the country.
By the turn of the millennium, Travelex plc. identified as one of the fastest
growing private companies in the UK, completed its acquisition of Thomas Cook
Group’s Global and Financial Services. Travelex is the world’s largest non-bank
foreign exchange specialist and is a global brand. As a result of the acquisition, all
Thomas Cook Travel offices in Asia, including the Philippines, now operate under
the name TRAVELEX Travel Services.
In June 2007, Travelex decided to withdraw from its travel services business
worldwide and instead focus on its core business, foreign exchange and financial
services. The forty percent shareholding was subsequently bought by Asia Pacific
Top Management Intl. Resources Corp., a leading management company which
operates the Marco Polo Plaza Cebu.
FIRST METRO TRAVEL offers a complete line of travel services which include
corporate travel management, foreign and domestic leisure travel, travel
documentation, travelers cheques and travel insurance. Aside from its Head
Office located at the G/F Skyland Plaza Condominium along Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue
in Makati, First Metro Travel has branch offices in POEA Bldg., Mandaluyong City,
Vega Centre in Los Banos, Laguna, and in Metrobank Plaza, Fuente Osmena, Cebu
City.
