PRODUCT NAME

TRASAR 20209
COOLING WATER SCALE AND CORROSION INHIBITOR
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION AND APPLICATION
TRASAR products are part of an innovative water treatment program that uses proven
technology to prevent operational problems. TRASAR programs provide a return on
investment through their unique control and diagnostic capabilities.
TRASAR 20209 is a molybdate/organophosphonate-based blend of scale and corrosion

inhibitors with Nalco TRASAR Technology for open recirculating cooling water systems.
This product is designed for systems with corrosive water (low hardness and /or low
alkalinity). TRASAR 20209 will provide protection over a wide range of operating
parameters. For low hardness/low alkalinity waters, TRASAR 20209 is applicable for 0-350
ppm Calcium and M-alkalinity.
TRASAR 20209 is also recommended for zeolite softened water systems (low hardness/ low
alkalinity). In these applications, the upper alkalinity limit is 2000 ppm. TRASAR 20209
should not be used when galvanized iron is part of the system.

DOSAGE AND FEEDING

Consult your Nalco representative for complete dosage and feeding information.
This product contains a tracer material that allows it to be controlled with TRASAR
Technology. TRASAR Technology assures proper product dosage is fed. Proper set-up and
calibration of TRASAR equipment is absolutely required. Remember that TRASAR does not
measure specific product actives. Measurement of actives is required to ensure a successful
program and it must be done with alternate analytical procedures. The TRASAR unit should

be calibrated weekly and the lamp -- if using the TRASAR 340 or TRASAR 350 system -replaced annually.
Before recommending the use of a TRASAR Technology-based program, background
fluorescence in the system must be determined. The background fluorescence, as ppm of
product = BF X product factor X 0.01. If background fluorescence, as ppm product, is less
than 15% of the recommended product dosage, this application can use TRASAR
technology. If the background fluorescence, as ppm product, is greater than 15% of the
recommended product dosage, post your specific conditions in the WWTS Global Water
Technical Forum.

If the TRASAR Xe-2 controller is to be used, request background fluorescence test TRAXE2.

If the TRASAR 3000 controller is to be used, request background fluorescence test

TRASAR Control and Calibration

The TRASAR product factor for TRASAR 20209 is 200.
How to choose the proper Calibration Solution
1. Verify which TRASAR material is in the product. TRASAR 20209
contains TRASAR #2.
2. Use the following to estimate the calculated Calibration Factor.
Round to the closest calibration solution value.

Target Dosage
= Calculated Calibration Factor

3. Use the chart below to determine which Calibration Solution Value
and Solution Number is closest to "Calculated Calibration Factor."

4. Choosing the proper calibration solution will help you maintain

the desired accuracy and precision of the TRASAR program.
If yellow metal corrosion is identified, consider recommending the TRASAR Xe-2 controller to
monitor TT concentrations or to more accurately control the TRASAR 20209 dosage. Refer
to Bulletin 501 for details about using the TRASAR Xe-2 controller for TT monitoring. If the
TRASAR Xe-2 controller is used for this purpose, perform a background fluorescence
analysis using test code ABT.
DOSAGE
Start-up:
For best results, the system should be clean and free of deposits prior to start-up. A new or

recently cleaned system should be pre-treated (NALPREP III) whenever possible.

Initially slug feed 200 ppm of TRASAR 20209 to the system (based on system volume).
Maintenance:
After the initial slug, TRASAR 20209 must be fed continuously to maintain a minimum
dosage. This minimum dosage depends on the recirculating water chemistry and return
temperature. See Figures 1 and 2 for this minimum dosage. Set control range ca. 25% higher
than the minimum recommendation in the figures. For effective results, the recirculating water
must be kept within the following ranges:
Conductivity
M-alkalinity
Calcium Hardness
Silica
Ortho Phosphate

0-1500 ms/cm
0-350 ppm
5-350 ppm
0-150 ppm Si02
0-5 ppm PO4

In zeolite softened water applications, the M-alkalinity limit is 2000 ppm.

FEEDING
TRASAR 20209 must be fed continuously to ensure that adequate levels of product is
maintained at all times. Slug feeding must be avoided because it will result in periods of low
and high product levels. Since TRASAR 20209 operates under corrosive conditions, low
product levels will result in excessive corrosion. TRASAR 20209 must be fed neat or diluted
with soft water in a day tank. Feed TRASAR 20209 to any convenient point where rapid
mixing and distribution throughout the system will occur.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS
Phosphonate is the main corrosion inhibitor but needs the help of the MoO4. The
Phosphonate probably acts as both anodic and cathodic inhibitor. As an anodic inhibitor for
mild steel it probably forms an insoluble iron-phosphonate complex at the anode.
As a cathodic inhibitor, the phosphonate forms an insoluble Ca-phosphonate film or its
breakdown products form Ca3(PO4)2 at the cathode. The MoO4 acts purely as an anodic

inhibitor. In combination with phosphonate, the MoO4 probably replaces the phosphonate at
the anode, allowing it to be more effective at the cathode or used for scale inhibition. The
phosphonate prevents scale formation by distorting the crystal structure of CaCO3.
Neither phosphonate nor MoO4 are as effective when used separately (synergism). Another
organic film-former provides corrosion inhibition of copper.
The organophosphonate of TRASAR 20209 is subject to degradation from oxidizing
biocides, like chlorine and bromine. It is important not to overfeed oxidizing biocides.
Degradation of the phosphonates will result in excessive corrosion.
