TRASAR 20209
COOLING WATER SCALE AND CORROSION INHIBITOR
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION AND APPLICATION
TRASAR products are part of an innovative water treatment program that uses proven
technology to prevent operational problems. TRASAR programs provide a return on
investment through their unique control and diagnostic capabilities.
TRASAR 20209 is a molybdate/organophosphonate-based blend of scale and corrosion
inhibitors with Nalco TRASAR Technology for open recirculating cooling water systems.
This product is designed for systems with corrosive water (low hardness and /or low
alkalinity). TRASAR 20209 will provide protection over a wide range of operating
parameters. For low hardness/low alkalinity waters, TRASAR 20209 is applicable for 0-350
ppm Calcium and M-alkalinity.
TRASAR 20209 is also recommended for zeolite softened water systems (low hardness/ low
alkalinity). In these applications, the upper alkalinity limit is 2000 ppm. TRASAR 20209
should not be used when galvanized iron is part of the system.

be calibrated weekly and the lamp -- if using the TRASAR 340 or TRASAR 350 system -replaced annually.
Before recommending the use of a TRASAR Technology-based program, background
fluorescence in the system must be determined. The background fluorescence, as ppm of
product = BF X product factor X 0.01. If background fluorescence, as ppm product, is less
than 15% of the recommended product dosage, this application can use TRASAR
technology. If the background fluorescence, as ppm product, is greater than 15% of the
recommended product dosage, post your specific conditions in the WWTS Global Water
Technical Forum.
If the TRASAR Xe-2 controller is to be used, request background fluorescence test TRAXE2.

FEEDING
TRASAR 20209 must be fed continuously to ensure that adequate levels of product is
maintained at all times. Slug feeding must be avoided because it will result in periods of low
and high product levels. Since TRASAR 20209 operates under corrosive conditions, low
product levels will result in excessive corrosion. TRASAR 20209 must be fed neat or diluted
with soft water in a day tank. Feed TRASAR 20209 to any convenient point where rapid
mixing and distribution throughout the system will occur.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS
Phosphonate is the main corrosion inhibitor but needs the help of the MoO4. The
Phosphonate probably acts as both anodic and cathodic inhibitor. As an anodic inhibitor for
mild steel it probably forms an insoluble iron-phosphonate complex at the anode.
As a cathodic inhibitor, the phosphonate forms an insoluble Ca-phosphonate film or its
breakdown products form Ca3(PO4)2 at the cathode. The MoO4 acts purely as an anodic
inhibitor. In combination with phosphonate, the MoO4 probably replaces the phosphonate at
the anode, allowing it to be more effective at the cathode or used for scale inhibition. The
phosphonate prevents scale formation by distorting the crystal structure of CaCO3.
Neither phosphonate nor MoO4 are as effective when used separately (synergism). Another
organic film-former provides corrosion inhibition of copper.
The organophosphonate of TRASAR 20209 is subject to degradation from oxidizing
biocides, like chlorine and bromine. It is important not to overfeed oxidizing biocides.
Degradation of the phosphonates will result in excessive corrosion.

Please refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), SECTIONS 11 and 12, for all aquatic
and mammalian information.
STORAGE
TRASAR 20209 should be stored in a location where the product will not freeze. If freezing
occurs, move the drums or container to a warm area to thaw.
Recommended in-plant storage limit is six months.
Bulk storage tanks should be 304 stainless steel, polyethylene or polypropylene. All other
materials are unacceptable.
