Grace in the Mud: Working to empower young girls

Grace in the Mud, Inc., a Cherry Hill non-profit, is dedicated to
empowering girls through positive identity formation, character
development and community
service connections as they approach one of the most difficult
and rapidly changing times in
their overall development as
women: adolescence.
To this end, Grace in the Mud
has partnered with many community business owners and professionals to provide unique and
meaningful learning experiences
outside the classroom, with the
hope of improving the trajectory
of the girls future choices. Haddonfields Colette Oswald Photography and Lisa Michaels Salon recently provided the girls of Grace
in the Mud the unique opportunity of a small makeover and photo
shoot. The objective was to teach
the girls about their jobs as female business owners, as well as
make them feel beautiful for who
they are.
I was really happy to hear that
they have this program for young
girls I remembered what it was
like for me being a little girl and

time) that anyone said anything
really positive to me (in my adolescence) To this day I remember how big that was. So I welcome the chance to lift them up a
little and encourage them, and
make them feel good about themselves, Lisa Michaels said.

do a little photo shoot for each of

girls?

in Haddonfield for 15 years, to do
a little primping of the girls before their portraits were taken.
(We wanted to do portraits) of

the girls so theyll have something to remember the day by, but
also, being photographed can be
such an empowering experience,
Oswald said.

At last weeks meeting, Haddonfield commissioners approved

a number of resolutions for
events. Mayor Jeff Kasko feels
Haddonfield hosting so many
events is a great way to get people
into town and support local businesses.
It really gets people from
around the area to come downtown. When we have the First
Night, Antique Car Show, Fall
Festival and (other events), it is a
nice way to attract people to our
downtown that might not ordinarily come, Kasko said.
Commissioners approved resolutions for the Fall Festival, the
Haddonfield Night Market, a fire-

works display for First Night, the

Antique Auto Show, Food Truck
and a Movie and an Ergathon.
I think (these events) are great
for our businesses and our downtown, Kasko said. If it is someones first or second time in Haddonfield, they (will hopefully)
think this will be a great place,
and come back and shop or enjoy
a meal.
Haddonfields Fall Festival will
be held on Saturday, Oct. 15 from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a rain date
of Oct. 16 from noon to 5 p.m. According to the resolution, there
will be charitable town organizations, vendors designated by Renaissance Craftables, food purveyors and other entities permitted

in New Jersey
Richard Donnelly, principal of
Newspaper Media Group and its
affiliates, announced that he has
acquired The Sun Newspapers
based in Haddonfield from
Elauwit Media. The Sun Newspapers are published weekly in nine
towns in South Jersey as well as
in Princeton in Central Jersey.
The Suns have won numerous
awards for distinguished journalism over the last decade, including a number of awards from the
Society of Professional Journalists in 2014, 2015 and 2016 in categories competing with daily
newspapers.
Donnelly, president of Donnelly Distribution in Pennsauken,
recently purchased Broad Street
Media, where he was a minority
owner. This acquisition represents his intent to grow the business in key markets and further

build out Broad Street Medias

Like it or not, passing the standardized test will soon be a requirement

adopted a measure earlier this
month that will require high
school students to pass the infamous
PARCC tests in English and math to
graduate high school.
While the controversial PARCC tests
have been administered for two years
now, they havent meant much to students futures. Starting with the class
of 2021, which will enter eighth grade
this fall, passing the Algebra I and
10th-grade English part of the test will
be a requirement to receive a high
school diploma.
PARCC has been a highly controversial standardized test since it was first
put into effect two years ago. Opponents feel, among numerous other
things, that the test is too hard, that
its too tough for kids to take entirely
on a computer and that it bucks the
nationwide trend of moving away
from standardized testing in general.
In the last four years, the number of
states that require students to pass an

exit exam for graduation has been reduced almost in half from 25 in 2012
to 15 currently. Concerns range from
low passing rates preventing a large
number of students from graduating
to simply too much testing.
New Jersey, though, feels differently.
State Education Commissioner David
Hespe says the 2021 effective date of
PARCC as a graduation requirement
will give school districts and students
enough time to adjust to the new test
and improve upon their scores.
Lets hope hes right on that last
point, as only 41 percent of test takers
passed Algebra I last year and only 44
percent passed 10th-grade English.
We tend to agree with Hespe on this
point, though. Many students who
took the test the last two years knew it

didnt matter, so it would be no surprise if we could assume that many

didnt take the test seriously. Make the
test a graduation requirement, and
students will be more likely to try
harder.
While we dont necessarily like the
PARCC test in all forms, were not so
hell-bent against standardized testing
as a graduation requirement, in general. Education in New Jersey has always been held to a higher standard,
and its paid off; our students rank
higher than most in other states.
Can PARCC itself be improved and
better reflect a students learning? Of
course. But theres time to do that before 2021. Frankly, every student who
graduates high school in our state
should have the ability to pass a test in
Algebra I and 10th-grade English. How
those tests are administered, and how
they align with what we teach our
children in the classroom are what
need to be ironed out between now and
when its too late.

New windows, flooring and faces at Markeim ceramic studio

Markeim Art Centers ceramic studio recently made some dramatic changes with
new windows, new flooring, new wheels,
new kilns and some new instructors,
too.
Ceramics team members include:
Donna Los is a ceramic teacher and potter. She graduated from Moore College of
Art with a bachelors of fine arts in ceramics and a bachelors of science in art education. Los started teaching children handthrowing classes at Markeim in 1990. In
1997, she moved her studio of four potters
wheels and large kin into Markeim and de-

veloped a pottery program for children and

adults. She offers classes each class schedule.
Mary Ellen Stanzillis is a lifelong-learner. She has studied ceramics at University
of Southern Maine, University of New
Mexico, The College of New Jersey and
University of the Arts. In addition to her
degrees in art therapy, art education and
photography, she has enjoyed teaching ceramics for several years. Stanzillis serves
as Markeim ceramics and education director.
Lillian Ding is the newest addition to the

Markeim team. She graduated from the Art

Institute of Boston at Lesley University in
Cambridge Massachusetts with a bachelors of fine arts in sculpture, ceramics and
painting. She did her post-BFA ceramics as
a student member at the ceramics studio at
Harvard University. In the fall of 2013, she
moved back to New Jersey and has since
joined as an intern artist at the Clay Studio
in Philadelphia. Starting this summer, she
joined Markeim as a studio assistant and
instructor.

asks for help with new playground
Volunteers needed on Sept. 10 to help build school playground

The students of Elizabeth Haddon Elementary School will soon
have a new playground to enjoy
their recess on this school year.
However, they wouldnt have it
without the help of the community.
The Elizabeth Haddon Parent
Teacher Association is thankful
for the communitys contribution
over the past two years to help
raise funds for the playground

and is now looking for volunteers

to come to the school on Saturday,
Sept. 10 to help with a community
build of the playground. This will
help save costs and is a great way
to help out the community.
What would be a better way to
start the school year than with a
community build? It feels great to
help in my opinion. And to see all
of the things the PTA does, that it
really does go to the kids, and
shows if we all get together, look
at what we can accomplish. We
couldnt do this if we didnt have

the type of community that we

have, Liz Barrett, of the PTA and
Playground Committee, said.
The Lizzie Haddon PTA has
been raising funds for a new playground for second through fifth
graders the past two years
through its annual events such as
the Fall Fair and the 5k. Barrett
said the playground was much
needed, as the old one was outdated and not everyone could use
it.

New tool to combat the spread

of mosquito borne illness

The Camden County
Freeholder Board's Mosquito Commission and
Health Department is
leveraging technology to
allow residents to report
suspected mosquito breeding locations online. The
Board is taking more
proactive steps as the threat of mosquito
borne illnesses expand by providing new tools
to residents and employees to make the operation more effective and efficient.
Having a digital format for residents to go on
their computers or phones and report an infestation or breeding area is invaluable. Our
Mosquito Commission regularly checks several thousand suspected mosquito breeding
sites across the county. This new tool will
allow them to assist residents in their surveillance efforts and help them determine sites in
need of remediation.
Camden County residents can visit
www.camdencounty.com<http://www.camdencounty.com> to report mosquito hot spots.
There they will also find the mosquito spraying schedule and tips for keeping your yard
mosquito-free.
The county website has a link to the easy-touse reporting form. When you click on report
a mosquito issue in your town, you can select
your town from a drop-down menu and provide the exact location of the problem. In addition to describing the issue, you can also
attach a picture right in the form.
Residents will receive updates from the mosquito commission on the status of their report. Mosquito spraying and remediation
efforts are scheduled on an as needed basis
based upon the results of the Mosquito Commission's investigation.
The mosquito sprayings take place early in
the morning when mosquitoes are most active. The mosquito spray is not harmful to hu-

mans or pets, but you

should avoid direct contact
if you have respiratory
concerns or are sensitive to
irritants.
This is a simple and efficient new tool that can be
accessed anywhere at any
time to pinpoint the location of mosquito breeding locations. In Camden County, technology has joined the fight
against mosquitoes and the diseases they
carry.
Although there have been no locally transmitted cases of Zika Virus from mosquitoes
reported in New Jersey at this time, the Camden County Department of Health and
Human Services is working closely with the
CDC and the New Jersey Department of
Health to actively monitor the situation. The
prevalence of West Nile Virus (WNV) and
Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) are still
major concerns of the Camden County Health
Department and Mosquito Commission.
The single most important thing you can do
as a homeowner to protect yourself and your
family from mosquitoes is eliminating standing water around your yard. All pre-adult
mosquito stages (eggs, larvae, and pupae)
must be in stagnant water in order to develop
into adult mosquitoes.

Gerald E. Harris
Aug. 15, 2016
Gerald E. Harris, a longtime
Haddonfield resident passed
away on Aug. 15 at his home in
Haddonfield at the age of 87. Gerald was a great husband, father,
grandfather and friend who will
be dearly missed. He was born in
Salem to the late J. William Harris and Sarah Harris. He was the
devoted husband of Anne (Ginley) Rehermann Harris for the
past 43 years; beloved father of
Gerry Harris (Jill) of Dublin,
Ohio, and stepfather of Dick Rehermann (Carol) of Dubois, Pa.,
Bob Rehermann of Las Vegas,
Nev., Greg Rehermann (Edwina)
of Kamas, Utah, and Tom Rehermann
(Ginny
WilsonWilliams) of Philadelphia, Pa.;
and loving grandfather of Kurt
Harris, Keith Rehermann, Elissa
Varacallo, Susan Lenhart, Mark
Rehermann, Robert Rehermann

and Elizabeth Taylor. He had

three great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife,
Virginia Mourning Harris and
his brother Allen Harris.
He graduated from the University of Delaware with a chemical
engineering degree and then
served in the Army for three
years in Germany. Gerald began
his career in engineering with
the Campbell Soup Company and
worked there until he retired in
1993. Gerald enjoyed playing golf
with friends at Tavistock Country
Club for 40 years. He also enjoyed
boating, fishing, bridge and especially sharing his life with his
wife Anne.

Mr. Harris family received

friends on Friday, Aug. 19 at 10
a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Kain-Murphy
Funeral Services in Haddonfield;
where his service followed at 11
a.m. Interment was at Haddonfield Baptist Cemetery. In lieu of
flowers, memorial donations may

already prepared foods for sale.
There will also be carriage rides.
The Haddonfield Night Market
will be held on Thursday, Sept. 8
from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. At the Night
Market, vendors whose products
include food-related items, chosen
by the Partnership for Haddonfields Marketing Committee, are
authorized to be located at designated areas within the downtown
area.
The Antique Auto Show will be
held on Sept. 17 from 8 a.m. to 4
p.m., with a rain date of Sept. 24.
Kings Highway from Haddon Avenue to the PATCO station will be
closed for the show. In addition to
automobiles on display, there will
be music, merchandise displays
and food vendors.
Other events approved last
week include Food Truck and A
Movie by Rent-A-Chef, Inc. on
Sept. 16, the Ergathon by the Haddonfield Crew Club on Nov. 18,
and the annual fireworks display
for First Night on Dec. 31 between
the hours of 8:45 p.m. and 9:15
p.m.
In other news:
Commissioners approved two
ordinances on second reading
that amend the borough code.
The first ordinance set the rate
for fire inspection and a fee waiver
for new houses. According to the
ordinance, the inspection fee is $35
if the application is submitted and
paid for more than five business
days prior to settlement. The fee is
$75 for fewer than five business

days. If the property does not comply with the inspection requirements, one additional re-inspection will be made at no cost, and
any after that are $25 each.
Additionally, a waiver of the
fee and inspection will only be authorized for the sale of a newlyconstructed home within 60 days
of the issuance of a certificate of
occupancy by construction officials.
The second ordinance allows
for certain businesses to put out a
free standing bill-of-fare sign, better known as a sandwich board. A
business that has retail merchandise in at least 51 percent of the
square footage of their floor
space may apply for such a sign.
Also, the store name may not be
more than four inches in height if
it is located on the sign.

A change order was made to

the 2015 Road Program/2014 Euclid Avenue Phase 2 project. The
original contract amount was
$750,422.40. Extras added to the
contract amounted to $25,502.32,
however there were reductions as
well, amounting to $94,105.70.
This made the final $681,818.02,
saving $68,604.38. Kasko said the
leftover funds would be put into
capital surplus to be used in the
future.
Nate Finnegan was appointed
to Haddon Fire Company No. 1.
Starting in September, the
commissioners meeting schedule
returns to the second and fourth
Tuesdays, with the first and third
Mondays being work sessions.
The first meeting in September is
scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 13 at
7:30 p.m.

For the photos, Oswald wanted
to keep things simple and elegant.
Each of the girls wore a black
tank top and sat in front of a
black background. Only a touch
of makeup and an easy hairstyle
were given to the girls. This was
so they can be their natural
selves, but also feel beautiful and
empowered by the photo shoot.
I dont know how many of
these girls are getting the chance
to present themselves the way
theyd like to this gives them
the opportunity to dream bigger,
Oswald and Michaels said, combining their thoughts.
That is the big focus of Grace
in the Mud. Program curriculums are uniquely designed with
the girls interests in mind with a
primary focus on inspiring passion to drive perseverance (AKA:

Romani-Kane said Grace in the
Mud would love to expand its
reach, however it needs the help
of the community. They accept financial and in-kind donations,
and if individuals, business owners or organizations have an opportunity to teach the girls something, they too may offer that
service as well. All Grace in the
Mud would like is the opportunity to give young, at-risk girls the
chance to blossom.
Its really about, at the beginning and the end of the day, instituting methodologies to help us
work with our bodies, minds and
spirits to blossom despite adversity, Romani-Kane said. Like a
lotus flower, it grows in murky
waters, but rises beautifully to
shine.

Barrett also wanted to acknowledge

the PTA, and Haddonfield Public
Schools grounds supervisor Rick
Sparks and his crew for all of the
prep work in taking down the
playground this summer to prepare for the community build.
The PTA had done a community build previously with the
smaller playground at Lizzie Haddon in October 2014 and received
a great response. So it decided to

have another one for this years

new playground. Plus, it saves
about $10,000, Barrett said.
Instead of the (playground
company) sending a group of
their people out, they only need to
send one person who can lead the
pack. Plus, this is a great way for
parents to be involved, Barrett
said.
All levels of skill are invited to
help. Barrett said there is something for everyone, from heavy
lifting to spreading mulch.
When the playground is built,
Barrett knows the children will
be ecstatic and thinks children
will love that their parents helped
to build it.
I think the kids would really
like to see the parents involved so
they can say, my parent helped
build that. And it helps them to
appreciate it more, Barrett said.
This build will be for about 75
percent of the new playground,
which is the center and main part
of it. The PTA is planning three
phases, with a second and third
