Jaffna Muslim

Association is a
registered, UK-based
non-profit charity
organisation that aims
to help all people
across Sri Lanka.

Flood Appeal 2016

Our organisation was

founded in 2002 and
our initial aim was to reunite the Jaffna Muslim
community following
the forcible expulsion
of Muslims from Jaffna
in October 1990 during
the Sri Lankan Civil War.

Sri Lanka experienced extremely heavy rainfall in late May

which resulted in flooding and mudslides wreaking havoc
across the island nation. Hundreds of thousands of people
were displaced from their homes as 19 out of Sri Lanka's 25
districts were affected by the disaster.

Majority of our
donations go towards
helping widows,
orphans, the ill and
disabled, people in
need of financial help,
as well as community
establishments, such as
masjids and schools in
need of further
funding.

We collected 6,550 in total.

JMA also runs

emergency disaster
appeals, sponsorship
projects, a Janazah
project, annual Fitra
and Qurbani appeals,
as well as UK-based
community gatherings.
Insha'allah we hope to
see you support us!

Annual Gathering
2016
We would just like to say Jazakallah Khair to
everyone who came to our annual gathering! It
was nice to see everyone in the community come
and support JMA once again; we genuinely hope
that you enjoyed the day programme and
learned more about our projects.
Congratulations to Harrow FC who won the
football tournament in the under-15s category
and the Slough team who won in the adult
category, it was lovely to see good sportsmanship
amongst all our brothers.
We would also like to say a special thank you to
the children for performing in our Childrens
Programme to an excellent standard. It was
fantastic to see a variety of well-prepared
performances- we had Qiraath, speeches, fancy
dress and singing sunflowers onstage. Everyone is
very proud of you and we hope that you enjoy
your prizes.
Further thanks to everyone who was involved in
the womens activities, the quiz, as well as the
debate on the harms and benefits of
smartphones. Many interesting points were raised
and it was good to see that the members of the
audience were well engaged in the discussions.
We would also like to express how grateful we are
towards all volunteers for standing by the charity
and supporting each other through every
situation. Whether you were working in the main
hall, outside, in the kitchen, onstage or in the
reception, please do not think that your efforts
went unnoticed; we sincerely appreciate and
value your hard work and kindness. Jazakallah
khair for your efforts, the programme could not
have run without your help.
One aspect of the event that was particularly
admirable was the level of community spirit
exhibited- we hope to see our Jaffna Muslim
community continue supporting each other in this
excellent manner for many years to come.

Why are community events so important to JMA?

The Jaffna Muslim Community was torn apart in Sri Lanka's civil war. Families, neighbours and life-long
friends were dispersed across the earth and our culture and way of life was lost. But by holding community
events, it gives us a chance to re-unite with each other under the good cause of charity. At our
gatherings and iftars, we often find that people who have not seen each other for years meet each other
again. Community events also create a good opportunity for our brothers and sisters abroad in places
such as France and Germany to come and support JMA. We also use our community events to build links
with other charities and masjids who can help JMA to achieve its full potential by kindly releasing money
from their funds.

FAQ
Why are you called 'Jaffna Muslim Association'?
We are called Jaffna Muslim Association because this organisation was originally created to
unite the Jaffna people,, which makes the name an important part of our history as a charity
charity.
JMA mainly helps Muslims in the Northern areas of Sri Lanka but that does not mean that we
turn away Muslims from other areas who need help,, nor does it mean that we turn away
people from other backgrounds who are in need.
need Furthermore, there
here is no organisation that is
specifically targeted towards the Jaffna
Jaffna community, hence why we feel it is important to
retain this name.

Why do you photograph your projects?

We photograph our projects solely to encourage people to donate, to show the community
where their money is going and to document our progress as a charity.

What does 'non-profit'

'non profit' and 'NGO' mean?
The fact that our charity is 'non--profit'
profit' means that all of our members work voluntarily and are
not paid. JMA is an NGO (non--governmental organisation) as we do not have any political
motives and remain neutral
neutral regardless of what happens in the political sphere.

QURBANI

DISASTER RELIEF

CHILDREN

We normally collect Qurbani

contributions before Eid al-Adha. One
share is 35 and the whole amount of
shares cost 210. We normally
distribute in the Northern Province of Sri
Lanka but we also distribute in other
areas where we know there is a
significant Muslim population.

Upon hearing about disasters in Sri Lanka, JMA

acts very quickly to respond to people in need.
Previously JMA has raised money for the victims
of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami and for various
flooding incidents.

We mainly help orphans with whatever they

need but we also collect money for children who
require sponsorship for school. Normally the
money goes towards buying them basic school
supplies or assisting children with transportation
fees.

FITRA

MEDICAL

WOMEN

Fitra is 4 per person and we normally

collect contributions in the month of
Ramadan with the intention of distributing
the bags of rice a few days before Eid. Fitra
distribution always takes place in Sri Lanka.

JMA often receives many letters from Sri Lanka

and majority of them request for medical
assistance. It would be fantastic to see more
donations for people who need vital equipment
or treatment. Previously JMA has had
wheelchair donation campaigns and has
donated wheelchairs to Jaffna Hospital.

ZAKAT

SUPPORTING LOCAL COMMUNITIES

SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS

JMA often supports community projects and

local teams, helps to build buildings necessary
to the community such as masjids or
graveyards and has a Janaza project that
people in the UK can take part in.

We believe that it is important to help people

take an active part in bettering their lives,
hence why we help them with things such as
starting up a business or providing them with
equipment to work so that they can earn.

Typically, JMA's zakat money goes

towards widows and orphans in Sri
Lanka.

JMA strives to support women in our

community. Previously, we have helped the
Manafa women's society with things such as
Qurbani donations. We also work to help
widows and women experiencing financial
difficulties.

WHY SUPPORT JMA?

'

Since 2002, JMA has been dedicated to bettering the lives of our brothers
and sisters in Sri Lanka. We have a strong team in the UK and in Sri Lanka
that respond very quickly to any sort of emergency situation. JMA's
strength lies in the very community that support it- your kindness will help
us to become stronger.
