Find Someone Who...

ESL EFL Writing and Speaking Activity - Elementary - 25 Minutes
In this speaking activity, students practice asking and answering questions using
adverbs of frequency. This is a good activity to use when introducing adverbs of
frequency for the first time. Students begin by reviewing adverbs of frequency
and their usage. Then they go through the items on their worksheet and practice
forming the questions that they need to ask in order to do the activity. Students
then move round the class asking 'How often do you...?' questions, e.g. How
often do you eat in a restaurant? When a classmate replies with the
sameEXPRESSION that is on the worksheet, the student writes the classmate's
name in the appropriate column and asks a follow-up question. If their answer
doesnt match with the expression on the worksheet, the students repeat the

question with other classmates until one of them says the correct response, e.g. I
sometimes eat in a restaurant. When everyone has finished, the students give
feedback to the rest of the class on what they found out about their classmates.
As a variation, students could ask the questions using the present simple
question form Do you? For example: Do you sometimes eat in a restaurant? If
the respondent answers Yes, I do, the student writes their name and asks a
follow-up question.

Fifty-Fifty
ESL EFL Writing and Speaking Activity - Elementary - 25 Minutes
In this entertaining guessing game, students write true and false sentences about
themselves using adverbs of frequency. Students then play a true or false card
game and try to guess the correct answers. Students complete six sentences
about themselves using various adverbs of frequency, three of which are true and
three of which are false. The students then work in small groups and each
student is given a set of true/false cards. Students take turns to read one of their
sentences to their group. After they have read their sentence, the other students
in the group guess whether they think the sentence is true or false. Each student
chooses one of their true/false cards and places it on the table. If they guess
correctly, they keep their card. If they guess incorrectly, the student who read the
sentence takes their card. The winner is the student with the most true/false
cards at the end of the game.

True Detective
ESL EFL Speaking and Matching Activity - Elementary - 25 Minutes
This is an amusing card game that helps students practice adverbs of frequency.
The class is divided into groups of three. Each group is given a set of action
cards and a set of frequency cards. Students deal out the frequency cards and
place the action cards face down in a pile. The first player takes an action card
and using the cue on the card asks the other players a question beginning with
'How often do you...?' The other players each reply, producing a frequency card,
e.g. hardly ever. They must try to choose a frequency card, which is as close to
the truth as possible. The first player then decides whose version is nearest to
the truth and gives the action card to that player. That player lays down the action
card and their frequency card. The second player takes an action card and so on.

How often do you use English?

the other group who guess whether their statements are true or false. Groups win

True or False Sentences

ESL EFL Writing and Speaking Activity - Pre-intermediate - 45 Minutes
This teaching activity makes an excellent review of frequency adverbs and
adverbial phrases for pre-intermediate students. The students get to practice all
the frequency adverbs as well as other less common adverbial phrases, such as
once in a while and every now and again. Each pair of students is given a set of
frequency cards and people cards. The first student takes the top card from each
pile and places them face up on the desk. The students task is to make a true or
false sentence by combining the two phrases on the cards. The student then
says the sentence and writes it down. After the student has written down the
sentence, its the other student's turn to pick up two cards and repeat the process

and so on. When all the cards have been used up, each student should have a
list of true and false sentences. Each pair then works with another pair. The pairs
take it in turns to read out their sentences. After each sentence has been read
out, the opposing pair guesses whether the sentence is true or false. If they
guess correctly, they win a point. If they are wrong, the other pair gets a point.
The pair with the most points at the end of the game wins.
