About me
ESL EFL Writing Activity - Elementary - 35 Minutes
This is a great activity toHELP students master the sentence structures used
with adverbs of frequency. Students begin by writing their name at the top of the
worksheet. The students then complete sentences by writing true information
about themselves based on the adverbs of frequency on the worksheet. Students
write sentences using two structures: subject + verb to be + adverb of frequency
+ adjective and subject + adverb of frequency + main verb. When everyone has
finished, the teacher collects the worksheets and reads some of the sentences
from each worksheet to the class. After reading each worksheet, the class guess
who is being described.

question with other classmates until one of them says the correct response, e.g. I
sometimes eat in a restaurant. When everyone has finished, the students give
feedback to the rest of the class on what they found out about their classmates.
As a variation, students could ask the questions using the present simple
question form Do you? For example: Do you sometimes eat in a restaurant? If
the respondent answers Yes, I do, the student writes their name and asks a
follow-up question.

Fifty-Fifty
ESL EFL Writing and Speaking Activity - Elementary - 25 Minutes
In this entertaining guessing game, students write true and false sentences about
themselves using adverbs of frequency. Students then play a true or false card
game and try to guess the correct answers. Students complete six sentences
about themselves using various adverbs of frequency, three of which are true and
three of which are false. The students then work in small groups and each
student is given a set of true/false cards. Students take turns to read one of their
sentences to their group. After they have read their sentence, the other students
in the group guess whether they think the sentence is true or false. Each student
chooses one of their true/false cards and places it on the table. If they guess
correctly, they keep their card. If they guess incorrectly, the student who read the
sentence takes their card. The winner is the student with the most true/false
cards at the end of the game.

Here is a fun board game toHELP students practice asking and answering
questions using adverbs of frequency. Students play in groups of four. The
players move their counters along the board. When a player lands on a question
square, the student to their right asks them a 'How often do you...?' question. The
player then tries to answer the question appropriately by making a sentence
using an adverb of frequency. If they do this successfully, they stay on the
square. If they make a mistake, they go back to their previous square. The first
player to reach the finish is the winner.

Pick Up Two
ESL EFL Matching Activity - Elementary - 20 Minutes
In this compelling activity, students put together sentences containing adverbs of
frequency that have been broken into two halves. In groups of three, students
take it in turn to pick up two cards, a beginnings card and an endings card. If the
two halves make a grammatically correct sentence, they keep the cards and win
a point. If the two halves don't match, they put the cards back in the same
position. The student in each group with the most points at the end is the winner.

ESL EFL Writing Activity - Elementary - 40 Minutes
In this rewarding ESL activity, students practice writing and ordering sentences
containing adverbs of frequency. The class is divided into teams of three and
each student is given a copy of the worksheet. The students begin by putting
words into the correct order to make sentences that contain adverbs of frequency.
Students start with the first sentence on their worksheet. They put the words into
the correct order to make an appropriate sentence, adding in any necessary
punctuation. The first team to call out the correct sentence wins three points. This
continues until all 12 sentences have been completed. When everyone has
finished, the students put the sentences into the correct order to form a text about
someones normal week. The first team to do this wins an additional five points.
The team with the highest score at the end wins.

True Detective
ESL EFL Speaking and Matching Activity - Elementary - 25 Minutes
This is an amusing card game that helps students practice adverbs of frequency.
The class is divided into groups of three. Each group is given a set of action
cards and a set of frequency cards. Students deal out the frequency cards and
place the action cards face down in a pile. The first player takes an action card
and using the cue on the card asks the other players a question beginning with
'How often do you...?' The other players each reply, producing a frequency card,
e.g. hardly ever. They must try to choose a frequency card, which is as close to
the truth as possible. The first player then decides whose version is nearest to
the truth and gives the action card to that player. That player lays down the action
card and their frequency card. The second player takes an action card and so on.
The player to get rid of all their frequency cards first is the winner.

ESL EFL Speaking Activity - Pre-intermediate - 30 Minutes
This activity is useful for teaching students how to formulate questions and
answers using adverbs of frequency. In groups of four, students place verb cards
face down in a pile and spread adverb of frequency cards out face down on a
table. The first student picks up a verb card and makes a 'How often?' question
using the verb. This question is directed at the second student. The second
student picks up an adverb of frequency card and answers using the adverb in a
sentence. The second student then picks up a verb card and asks a question to
the third student and so on. Every time a question or answer is correctly
formulated, the student gets a point. However, if a student makes an error,
anyone can jump in and take the point by correctly formulating the question or
answer.

and so on. When all the cards have been used up, each student should have a
list of true and false sentences. Each pair then works with another pair. The pairs
take it in turns to read out their sentences. After each sentence has been read
out, the opposing pair guesses whether the sentence is true or false. If they
guess correctly, they win a point. If they are wrong, the other pair gets a point.
The pair with the most points at the end of the game wins.
