ASTD Competencies Memo

Memorandum
To: Howard Schultz
From: Senior Learning Specialist
Date: March 30, 2015
Subject: Improved Instructional Learning Design
CC: Leadership Team
In addressing the growing high turnover rate of our employees, as well as inadequate training
that is resulting in customer complaints, our organization is going to solve these issues. To
resolve this matter in the design, there will be an improved Instructional Design for our managers
and employees. The new design will be implemented after the training of the managers is
complete so that they may make the changes in each store globally.
The first step in this new direction will be changes in the Instructional Design we currently are
using. We have prepared the assessment, learning theories; design, solutions, and we have
developed and evaluated the completed the new layout. The design we had before was not
addressing the managerial and training problems within our stores to its full extent. The problems
affected our employees, stores, and customers. To begin our change in design, we will train our
district and store managers to carry out these new design ideas. Coaching, performance
improvement, and training delivery are the primary focus of the changes to improve our stores
and employees, which are our most valuable assets.
Further information on the design changes includes three topics. One, our coaching needs to be
more active with our employees. The coaching taking place now is inefficient because our
organization is a fast paced environment. Employees lack the abilities to complete their tasks
because of the old design. Coaching will include listening, asking and answering questions, and
communication to fulfill and help the flawed gaps. Two, training delivery will facilitate all
employees, so they have a better understanding of the processes. Managers need to identify any
challenges the employees have to ensure they are gaining solutions during the training. A
positive learning environment, participation, and feedback will be focused on in the training
delivery. Three, performance improvement will be gauged by the managers and not overlooked.
Solutions to any performance problems should be properly thought out. Evaluations will take
place to make sure the proper performance problems are recognized. The managers need to take
action quickly with employees to meet our organization's goals and customer satisfaction.
The new instructional learning design may only have a few main topics, but they are essential to
our organization and success. Taking some extra time to address the new training will help with

retaining employees, customer satisfaction, the overall positive environment of the stores, and
our organization globally. Thank you very much for your time and cooperation during these
changes in our company.
