Fifthgradeisafunandchallengingyear.Skillsareakeyfocusintheprimarygrades
thisyear,wewillfocusmoreonlearninginformationinmanykeysubjectareas.The
amountofnewandchallenginginformationwillincreasethroughouttheschoolyearas
studentsmasterroutinesandtimemanagement.Thestudentplannerthatyourchild
willbebringinghomeeverynightwillhaveassignmentswehavedoneinclassaswell
asnotesaboutwhenwewillhavetestsandwhenhomeworkisdue.Pleaselookatthe
plannereverynightsothatyouknowwhatyourchildisdoingandwillbedoingeach
day.

SchoolWideExpectations:
TheAmsterdamWay:Berespectful,Beresponsible,Bereadytolearn,Besafe
Infifthgrade,wetalkaboutandpracticetheseexpectationsinallsettingsthroughout
theyear(classroom,recess,hallways,specials,etc.)

ClassWork:
Workmustbedoneinpencilandmustbeneat.Ifitisnotneatorisincomplete,itwill
needtoberedoneeitherathomeoratrecess.Iftimeisnotusedwiselyinclass,
studentswillbringworkhomeforhomework.Appropriateamountsoftimearegivento
studentstocompleteallworkinclass.

SnackShack:
HealthysnacksareavailablewhenKindergartenisinsession.Studentswillhavethe
opportunitytopurchasethesesnacksfor$.25.Occasionallythereisfreefruit,butthis
isnotconsistentsopleaseplanaccordingly.Ifyouwouldpreferothersnackoptionsfor
yourchild,pleasesendasnackfromhome.

Waterbottles:
Youmayhaveawaterbottleintheclassroom.Waterbottleswillbestoredbythesink
andfilledatappropriatetimes.Studentswillusehandsignalstoaskforadrinkofwater
duringinstructiontimes,butmaygetadrinkduringtransitions.

Homework:
*Whateverisnotfinishedinclasswillbesenthomeashomework.

*Althoughtherearemanybenefitstoreadingeachnight,readingwillnotberequired
homework.

*SpellingADearParentshomeworkpagewillcomehomeandhaveanassigned
duedateatthattime.Thesepagesaredesignedsothatthestudentdoesmost/allofthe
work,butparentsareexpectedtodiscussandhelptheirchild.Pleasetakeafew
minuteseachweektoworkonthispagewithyourchild!

*MathAhomeworkpagewillcomehomemostnightsandmustbereturnedthe
followingday.Evenifyourchildunderstandstheconceptswearedoinginclass,itis
helpfulforyoutocheckallhomeworkbeforeitisreturnedtoschool.Iencourageyouto
alsohelpyourchildreviewmathfactsathomeoften.Thiscanbedonewithflashcards
andcomputer/ipadgames.

*Anyhomeworknotcompletedwillresultinthepossiblelossofrecessorotheroutside
classtimeand/orpointstakenawayfromoverallassignmentgrade.

*TestsWewillreviewinclassfortests.Youwillknowthatatestisapproaching
becauseitwillbewritteninthestudentplanners.Studentsmaybringhometextbooks
tostudyforalltestsorjusttohelpwithanyassignment.

Misseddays:
Ifyouhaveaplannedtrip,pleaseletmeknowaheadoftimetoprepareworktobe
completedandreturnedatadesignatedduedate.Youwillhave2daysforeveryday
missedfromanunscheduledabsencetoturninwork.

Studentswillreceivelettergradesfortheassignmentsthatareturnedin.Reportcard
gradeswillbereflectiveofgradesearnedinclassandonhomeworkassignments.
Studentswillbringclassworkhome,soyoushouldseeallgradesbeforeanyreport
cardscomehome.
