Materials Science Engineering Requirements (various positions)

Required Experience:
* BS Materials Science or Mechanical Engineering required, MS Preferred
* 4+ years experience in alloy/metals material or process development.
* Experience working with material and final part manufacturers
* Familiarity with basic analysis methods (metallography, SEM/EDS)
* Strong analytical/problem solving skills and ability to use statistical tools
and techniques
* Flexibility and comfort working in a quickly changing environment
Preferred Experience:
* Experience with structural metals and their manufacturing
* Track record of material selection and development for products with
demanding performance requirements
* Experience with advanced manufacturing process development (Forming,
Forging, Welding, Casting, Anodizing, Plating, PVD)
* Mandarin or Japanese language skills a benefit.
This position will require international travel (10%+).
Key Qualifications

2 years experience in materials development.

Description
This design engineer will own the end-to-end mechanical development with
responsibilities including:
Brainstorming design concepts and executing design concepts in all
phases of a development cycle
Generating innovative designs with cross-functional teams
Defining high precision mechanical components and assembly schemes
Develop innovative manufacturing processes and tooling to allow for
automated assembly
Participating in the development of new manufacturing processes
Generating dimensional and tolerance analysis
Managing and tracking multiple priorities within schedule requirements
and ability to drive multiple vendors towards common project goals
Prototype bring-up, debug and characterization
Design validation and characterization from prototype bring-up to product
testing
Driving failure analyses and design of experiments (DOEs) to reach
design solutions and corrective actions
No significant overseas travel required
Key Qualifications

BS/MS in engineering (mechanical, chemical, industrial, materials science,


or equivalent)
5+ years of experience in development of finishing processes for
mechanical components, preferably in a hands-on role developing new
anodized cosmetic finishes on aluminum mechanical components
Ability to plan, execute, and present results from investigations using
statistical analysis and clearly communicated results and recommendations
Ability to drive root cause/corrective action activities
Must have minimum average, preferably superior color discrimination

ability
Solid understanding of mechanical properties of materials as they relate to
manufacturing requirements and process drivers
Experience working with an international supply chain
Ability to reconcile DFM feedback with design goals
Description
Utilize combined mechanical surface preparation (blasting, polishing,
texturing,) and decorative surface finishing techniques (anodizing,
electroplating, PVD,) to meet challenging new targets
Research new methods for creating new surface finishes and
implementing tighter control of existing finishes
Evaluate manufacturing processes at early stages of product
development to define critical process requirements and controls for
tightest output
Plan and execute studies to confirm process capability to achieve high
yields on high volume enclosures
Present analysis to key decision makers that will be used to make
commercial, cosmetic and design commitments. Evaluate supplier
capabilities and address shortcomings relative to company needs
Provide on-site support in conjunction with overseas counterparts for
implementation of manufacturing processes at supplier locations
Build relationships with these counterparts and suppliers, and foster
development of their capabilities and expertise. Maintain working
knowledge of key process drivers and subject matter expertise in the
technologies to serve as technical resource on project teams. Investigate
and validate new surface finishing processes, techniques, and equipment
where appropriate
Periodic domestic and overseas travel expected (Up to 30%)
Additional Requirements
Experience developing cosmetic anodizing processes applied to a variety

of aluminum alloys
Experience developing a variety of plating and other metal finishing
processes meeting both cosmetic and functional requirements
History of successfully implementing automation in a mass production
environment
Expertise in establishing process controls that adhere to strict color
specifications
Ability to use advanced analytical tools to characterize surface
topography and material characteristics
Solid understanding of DOE principles
Summary of Role:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties


may be assigned.
Primary responsibility for failure analysis of novel processes and structures
to meet SunPower solar cell development goals, with initial emphasis on
metallization.
Secondary responsibilities could include process step ownership, meaning
that some process development would be required. Integrating the
materials and processes into solar cells meeting performance, reliability
and yield goals
Coordinating or carrying out the characterization of solar cells or modules
through the use of several techniques including, photoluminescence,
electroluminescence, SEM, SIMS, defect etches, I-V, adhesion testing, etc.
The candidate wo uld be expected to participate in, or lead, a team to
determine the root cause of the issue based on the collected data.
Designing experiments (DOE)
Coordinating/executing experiments in the laboratory, at production
sites and at vendor sites
Analyzing and presenting data with recommendations
Communicating within a development team and with internal project
customers

Key responsibility includes


1. Perform Supplier Common assessment, Develop SWOT analysis &
identify critical gaps that must be actioned prior to engaging new supplier
in to supply chain.
2. Act as a technical liaison between Suppliers and internal functions within
organization, mainly to implement desired system and process such as
BIQ, APQP and PPAP. Extend technical support in resolving quality issues
affecting supply chain.
3. Lead problem solving team for timely resolution of supplier quality issues
through in-depth analysis of root cause, get corrective & preventive action
from supplier and verify effectiveness of action in avoiding reoccurrence of
issue.
4. Perform First artical inspection
5. Engage with line quality to improve supplier quality
6. Drive HOS like behaviors with key supplier
7. Support new supplire development and support material productivity
projects
8.Reduce incoming inspection, COPQ resulting due to supplier.
Establish communication link between supplier and Honeywell for effective
change management.
Qualifications :
In depth knowledge of basic quality tools, such as Pareto, Cause & effect
diagram, flowcharts, control charts, check sheets, scatter diagram &
histogram.
Understanding of advance Certified Six Sigma tools such as process
mapping, FMEA, flow charting, statistical process control (SPC), MSA
study and process capability study.
Understanding of DOE, Regression, Set up reduction, Process design for
flow and cell design will be added advantage..
Complete knowledge of ISO 9001 and TS 16949. Certified auditor will be
added advantage.

Ability to drive APQP, PSW and PPAP processes.


Good communication with interpersonal skill and able to influence people.
In-depth knowledge related to processing of commodities, such as CI &
Aluminum casting, Plastic & rubber molding and Sheet metal work.
Self motivated, ability to get result, integrative and logical thinker.
