Your* Enemy
We often failed to see the problem.
Sure its difficult, otherwise its not engineering.
But its actually easy as long as you know your key points.
Hints: limit into one sentences to represent your main problem

Your Enemy:
Selecting a topic

One of the hardest tasks is choosing a topic. This could be the easiest task:
What technical project are you working on now?
What topic did you write emails to more than one colleague about in the last
week back and forth?
What project do you have to present status on to your supervisor?
What is the longest / most interesting / most rewarded project you worked on
in the last 2 months?
Choose one of the above. You now have your topic.

Your Enemy
Example:
X field produced oil with 20Deg API gravity.
Production was declining with more than 25% per annum.
Maintain production is imminent.
State your problem in one sentences
Heavy oil production in mature field
fast decline in interconnecting oilfield
Oil recovery enhancement

Your Ideas & Limitation

This is your counter problem, actual solution.
Using previous
example, state
your possible
solution as many.

What: maintain production

Why: heavy oil
Where: downhole / reservoir
How: enhance oil recovery
Who: Chemical/reservoir Eng.
When: next year

The (not so) Miracle
Know your sh*t
Do you want to built a vision,
implementation, or a survey
paper?

Your unique concept:

The (not so) Miracle
Vision Paper
you describe your grand scheme of the world and why it is good.
Need:
Breakthrough Hypothesis, data to back up your statements, paper sources, book
citations.
Goal:
Shows your hypothesis could be up to something.

Your unique concept:

The (not so) Miracle
Implementation Paper
Gives detailed measurements of a
system
Need:
Application, lab test, simulation.
Goal:
demonstrate what you learned from
actually building the system

Your unique concept:

The (not so) Miracle
Survey Paper
Analyze market for any given objectives
Need:
broad market data
Goal:
Shown tendency of market response

Abstract

Essentially the selling point for the paper

Make your time to dwell on

Title and Abstract
Limit your abstract to three main paragraph, no more than 200
words:

Background
Methods
Result

Best to combine the method and result in one paragraph.

Your unique concept:

Abstract
First thing: emphasize your key point. Start from
there.
Make sure your key are, by minimum, in each of the
paragraph.
Example:
reservoir management
water shut off
Surface facilities
Chemical treatment
Completion Eng.

Your unique concept:

Introduction
1. Reasons for and importance of the work.
2. Brief description of the background to
the problem and the connection of the
present work to the background.
3. Research was done by the authors to
determine that the work is indeed new
and original. This is a comprehensive
review of related work.
4. Clear statement of the purpose or goal of
the work (hypothesis).

Your unique concept:

Main Body
Includes the work done which consists of; methods, results, analysis, and
discussion sections.
Methods shall be systematic & encompasses concepts such as paradigm,
theoretical model, phases and techniques.
Results should be given and analyzed, and discussed.
Tables, graphs, and diagrams should be used to help visualize and explain
the results and analysis.

Your unique concept:

Conclusion

No new information is presented.

How did the work support the

purpose or validate your research
hypothesis?

make the original claims more

concrete, e.g., by referring to
quantitative performance results.

Future work some times part of
