My Dog
Created By Mikki Janower
As soon as you skimmed the title, you knew this
would be a super annoying article. The kind where DD
writers discuss the details of their lives and broadcast them
to the world really unnecessarily, much to the chagrin of
the unfortunate readers. Well, you were right- this IS one
of those articles. HA. Cope. If you ever wrote for DD,
chances are I had to read a bunch of yours too, so this
can count as revenge. If youre not: DD writers ENJOY
posting this stuff, and if you think you can do it better than
come join DD yourself and prove it. Deal? Good.
Anyway, by this point Im sure youve realized
that I do, in fact, have a dog. If you havent, check the
title. Anyway, my dog is a tiny black Cockapoo by the
name of Mona Lisa. She has big brown eyes, floppy, furry
ears, and widdle baby paws. Whenever I get home the first
thing I see is Mona, pawing at the door- she always knows
Im there. She enjoys jumping on tables and stealing food.
In her puppy days she could dance on two paws and jump
through a hula hoop, but now that shes 3 (21 in dog years)
weve gotten too lazy to train her. She mostly naps, guards
the windows in case a chipmunk or something is outside,
and cuddles, though she also plays fetch. Someday I think
Ill teach her to bring me the newspaper every morning.
I drew a widdle Mona Lisa cartoon that a) looks nothing
like her and b) will hopefully be in the DD on the same
day as this article. (DD editors; it would be a good idea to
post them both on the same day, for convenience reasons!)
ANYhoozle, that concludes this article.
See? That was pretty annoying, unnecessary, and
uninteresting. Hope I helped brighten your day! XO.

Good Eats
By Zoe Lockhart
A few weeks ago, I went to a summer camp
called Summer Explorations. One of the many
things that I did there was Good Eats, a cooking
class. This class has made the best (American)
food I ever had. Below there is a recipe for
shepherds pie personally I think this is the best
shepherds pie in the world.
Ingredients
For the potatoes:
1 1/2 pounds russet potatoes (or sweet
potatoes)
1/4 cup half-and-half
2 ounces unsalted butter
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 egg yolk
For the meat filling:
2 tablespoons canola oil (or olive oil)
1 cup chopped onion
2 carrots, peeled and diced small (+2
parsnips also peeled and diced)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 1/2 pounds ground lamb (or half lamb and
half beef to total 1 1/2 lbs)
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons tomato paste
1 cup chicken broth
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons freshly chopped rosemary leaves
1 teaspoon freshly chopped thyme leaves
1/2 cup fresh or frozen corn kernels
Directions
Peel the potatoes and cut into 1/2-inch dice. Place
in a medium saucepan and cover with cold water.
Set over high heat, cover and bring to a boil. Once
boiling, uncover, decrease the heat to maintain a
simmer and cook until tender and easily crushed
with tongs, approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
Place the half-and-half and butter into a
