A Hitchhikers Necessary Objects

Created by Mikki Janower

This is dedicated to interstellar hitchhikers all over the
universe and inspired by the series A Hitchhikers
Guide to the Galaxy, which is the funniest series Ive
read in a long time and based on an alien book by the
same name. The post will teach YOU, dear interstellar
hitchhiker, (If youre not one, then scratch that) to pack
smart. The strange thing is, you dont need much!

Reminder from the Editors: Every day during
Festival Period, the Daily Double room is open
for anyone who wants to write an article, even if
youre not in the class.

1. The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy itself. Not

the series- the alien book that inspired it. Its so big it
has to be electronic rather than an actual book. Its so
confusing the words DONT PANIC are written in big,
calming letters across the back. It has a keyboard, and
essentially you type in a word and the book gives its
opinion. Every hitchhiker worth half his/her salt owns
it. Take note!
2. A towel. The aforementioned alien book says that
bringing a towel makes you LOOK like smart packer
and leads people to assume that youre also packed
necessities such as toothpaste, food, and water, meaning
theyll be more likely to lend you the latter three
supplies after youve pretended you had them packed
and later lost them. Many interstellar beings use the
saying, Now theres a man whos got his towel about
fellow beings who are put-together and clever.
3. A rock. You may happen to get angry and throw it in
a bush, where it then gets swallowed by a fox whose
corpse gets rushed away in the river, immediately
preceding someone you hate dying from drinking tainted
water. Note: This works better in an improbability field.
Anyway, this happens within the HGTTG series, which
helps me draw the conclusion that you may need a
rock.
4. Knowledge of tourism. You cant hitch a ride and
live on it forever- you need a destination! How about
the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, which takes
you forward in time to the apocalypse so as you dine
the universe gets destroyed around you? Or how about
a Disaster Area concert, where the best place to watch
is safely inside a concrete block miles away?
5. A companion. If youre already hitching a ride and
its too late to snatch one now, stop at the nearest
planet, walk up to a random stranger and say, Come
hang out with me, Im from another planet! This will
immediately render you more interesting than anybody
else at the venue and you will have gained yourself a
companion.

Forgive My Fins Book Review
Lauren Malster
I just finished reading, Forgive my Fins. It tells the story of Lily
Sanderson. Her sticky situation happens to be that she is part human
and part mermaid. She is living on land, and pretending to be a
normal teenager. Her Mother was a human and Lilys father who is a
mermaid, wanted her to experience life as a human. If Lily submerges
in water however, her fins replace her feet. Her aunt took Lily in, and
created a cover story so that it would sound like she was normal and
not from the sea. Nobody can know her secret, not even Shannon,
her best friend. Sometimes Lily almost slips her secret that could
put her kingdom in jeopardy. Shes not a regular mermaid, she is the
daughter of the King, and after he dies, she will take the throne. She
doesnt want the throne; shed rather swim around in the sea without
people expecting her to make the right decisions. In Tasalonia, (the
sea world kingdom) you must chose a person to devote yourself
too. Lily thinks she knows who she wants to become mermaid with
her. This person is a boy named Brody, the most popular boy at her
high school. But when a series of mishaps leads to Lily kissing her
annoying neighbor Quince, she must try to convince her father that it
was a mistake and she wants to pick a new person to devote herself
to. But, her father isnt willing to listen; Lily and Quince have to face
some tests for the separation to happen. Though Lily doesnt share
his feelings, Quince really likes Lily and wants to stay with her in
Tasalonia. Lily actually likes Quince but isnt willing to admit it.
She finally convinces her father and the separation is decided. Lily
and Quince are not devoted to each other. When she goes back to
land, and falls in love with Brody, and tells him her secret, he laughs
and makes fun of her while Quince accepts her. She finally realizes
that Quince is the right one for her. When she tells Quince that she
actually wants him, he forgives her. As they go back to Tasalonia,
everyone is happy to see that they made the right choice. They live
happily together and enjoy life at sea.
There will be a second one in the series which I look forward to
reading. I would give this book a 9 out of 10. But this book is only
appropriate for kids over ten because some of the chapters have
swears.

My Dog
Created By Mikki Janower
As soon as you skimmed the title, you knew this
would be a super annoying article. The kind where DD
writers discuss the details of their lives and broadcast them
to the world really unnecessarily, much to the chagrin of
the unfortunate readers. Well, you were right- this IS one
of those articles. HA. Cope. If you ever wrote for DD,
chances are I had to read a bunch of yours too, so this
can count as revenge. If youre not: DD writers ENJOY
posting this stuff, and if you think you can do it better than
come join DD yourself and prove it. Deal? Good.
Anyway, by this point Im sure youve realized
that I do, in fact, have a dog. If you havent, check the
title. Anyway, my dog is a tiny black Cockapoo by the
name of Mona Lisa. She has big brown eyes, floppy, furry
ears, and widdle baby paws. Whenever I get home the first
thing I see is Mona, pawing at the door- she always knows
Im there. She enjoys jumping on tables and stealing food.
In her puppy days she could dance on two paws and jump
through a hula hoop, but now that shes 3 (21 in dog years)
weve gotten too lazy to train her. She mostly naps, guards
the windows in case a chipmunk or something is outside,
and cuddles, though she also plays fetch. Someday I think
Ill teach her to bring me the newspaper every morning.
I drew a widdle Mona Lisa cartoon that a) looks nothing
like her and b) will hopefully be in the DD on the same
day as this article. (DD editors; it would be a good idea to
post them both on the same day, for convenience reasons!)
ANYhoozle, that concludes this article.
See? That was pretty annoying, unnecessary, and
uninteresting. Hope I helped brighten your day! XO.

A Titan(ic)

The Runaway Runway Rabbit

By Cate Robertson

Immediately regarding 99 years ago on April 15, 1912 the

world lost yet an additional Titan. But this one was a ship.
The Titanic was a ship unlike any other the world had
ever seen. It had a saltwater pool, Turkish baths, a squash
court. So many things that were astonishing for that time.
It was immobile believed that 3rd class was like 2nd class
on the majority of supplementary ships. But stubbornness
lost so many lives on her maiden and only voyage. Full
speed ahead, fooling around, even panic. But spiritually
she is still among us.

Ive gotta get out of here Thought Charlie the

rabbit. She felt like this is it! This is the end! Well,
little did she know this was not the beginning of
the end but the end of the beginning. Her person,
Lacey came into her pet room which consisted of
simply Charlie and a fish with no name. All Lacey
wanted was to cook and had lost her passion in
animals. She walked over to Charlies cage and
opened the door, Charlie jumped out and hopped
all the way downstairs and out the front door. Im
free! squeaked Charlie.

May she rest in peace.

Good Eats
By Zoe Lockhart

A few weeks ago, I went to a summer camp
called Summer Explorations. One of the many
things that I did there was Good Eats, a cooking
class. This class has made the best (American)
food I ever had. Below there is a recipe for
shepherds pie personally I think this is the best
shepherds pie in the world.
Ingredients
For the potatoes:
1 1/2 pounds russet potatoes (or sweet
potatoes)
1/4 cup half-and-half
2 ounces unsalted butter
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 egg yolk
For the meat filling:
2 tablespoons canola oil (or olive oil)
1 cup chopped onion
2 carrots, peeled and diced small (+2
parsnips also peeled and diced)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 1/2 pounds ground lamb (or half lamb and
half beef to total 1 1/2 lbs)
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons tomato paste
1 cup chicken broth
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons freshly chopped rosemary leaves
1 teaspoon freshly chopped thyme leaves
1/2 cup fresh or frozen corn kernels
Directions
Peel the potatoes and cut into 1/2-inch dice. Place
in a medium saucepan and cover with cold water.
Set over high heat, cover and bring to a boil. Once
boiling, uncover, decrease the heat to maintain a
simmer and cook until tender and easily crushed
with tongs, approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
Place the half-and-half and butter into a

microwave-safe container and heat in the microwave

until warmed through, about 35 seconds. Drain the
potatoes in a colander and then return to the saucepan.
Mash the potatoes and then add the half and half, butter,
salt and pepper and continue to mash until smooth. Stir
in the yolk until well combined.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
While the potatoes are cooking, prepare the filling:
Place the oil into a 12-inch (cast iron) saut pan and set
over medium high heat. Once the oil shimmers, add the
onion and carrots (and parsnips) and saut just until they
begin to take on color, approximately 3 to 4 minutes.
Add the garlic and stir to combine. Add the meat, salt
and pepper and cook until browned and cooked through,
approximately 3 minutes.
Sprinkle the meat with the flour and toss to coat,
continuing to cook for another minute. Add the tomato
paste, chicken broth, Worcestershire, rosemary, thyme,
and stir to combine.
Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer
slowly 10 to 12 minutes or until the sauce is thickened
slightly.
Add the corn to the meat mixture. (If you are not using
a pan that can go in the oven, then transfer the meat mix
into an 11 by 7-inch glass baking dish). Top with the
mashed potatoes, starting around the edges to create a
seal to prevent the mixture from bubbling up and smooth
with a rubber spatula. Place on a parchment lined half
sheet pan on the middle rack of the oven and bake for 25
minutes or just until the potatoes begin to brown.
Remove to a cooling rack for at least 15 minutes before
serving.
Funny knight story!!
Jake Rast
There once was a knight in the far out land of
Royalville. One day he saw a unicorn and he thought
to himself, What should I do? Should I pet it? Should
I tell my father? But then he moved to Snoozieland.
The end!!
