We have the right to our confidentiality and privacy,
in all contexts and in all contacts.
We have the right to be treated with dignity, com-
passion, sensitivity, and respect.
We have the right to have control over our lives, our
treatment, and our goals.
We have the right to be free from harassment and
discrimination, whether from governmental or non-
governmental authorities and agencies.
We have the right to quality health care, to choose
and, with/through a due process, change our health
care provider, without being penalized.
We have the right to discuss our feelings and fears,
openly, honestly, and on an ongoing basis.
We have the right to be free from intimidation and
abuse of any nature, whether physical, mental,
verbal, or sexual.
We have the right to a full and satisfying sexual and
emotional life.
We have the right to a standardized grievance proce-
dure that will leave us free from being penalized by a
provider or organization.
We have the right to case management (from the
moment we are informed of our HIV+ diagnosis).
We have the right to request a change in our case
management within one service organization to
another of our choice, without excessive red tape,
and without being penalized or refused (continuance
of) services that are available in the original service
organization, if we are being case managed by
another (service organization).
We have the right to treatment based on our illness,
rather than on our ability to pay, and to be informed
of caps or limits during treatment.
We have the right to establish priority of services
which will/may change with the progression of
the disease.

We have the right to be protected from exposure to
infectious diseases, which may further compromise
our health.
We have the right to make informed decisions about
our lives and in order to do so we have the right to
have full explanations of all medical procedures, risks
and benefits, and we have the right, without jeopar-
dizing our (overall plan of) treatment:
• to choose or refuse treatment, in all or in part,
• to choose or refuse participation in clinical
research trials,
• and to be informed of alternative modes
of treatment.
We have the right to include, exclude, or limit our
significant other, spouse, family, children, or care giv-
ers participation in our treatment plan and progress.
We have the right to participate in the assessment of
our own, and our family’s needs, and in the develop-
ment of a plan of (medical and or service) care; and
to arrange, coordinate, monitor, evaluate, and advo-
cate to match our needs to a package of services.
We have the right, at our request, to have our medi-
cal condition explained by a health or social service
professional to our families, school, job, church, etc.
We have the right to have information regarding
health hazards and safety procedures and practices
made available to all persons who are handling and/
or assisting us on a daily basis.
We have the right to culturally sensitive service orga-
nizations that embrace, encourage, and promote an
appreciation for and understanding of cultural and
ethnic diversity, regardless of legal or residency status.
We have the right to be referred or directed, by our
primary caregiver, to the proper service organiza-
tions if our request for services cannot be met by our
primary caregiver.
We have the right to non-judgmental, clear, and
non-condescending communication from all ser-

of the time frame for completing the investigation, not to exceed fifteen (15) working days from the

If your complaint still has not been resolved after completing the agency grievance resolution process
you can appeal that decision to the Consumer Advocacy Project.
