Jacob Wehr-Murphys Class Lesson Plan

Day: M T W T F

Date: 1/9/2016 Time: 1:40-2:10 Year: 4

Learning Area: Mathematics

Topic: Using a Legend and Direction to interpret a map

Curriculum content description: (from ACARA)

Using simple scales, legends and directions to interpret information contained in basic maps
(ACMMG090).
Students prior knowledge and experience:
(Outline what the students already know about this topic)
Basic understanding of compass points and direction.
Learning purpose: (May refer to the Elaborations of the curriculum content description
here)
Learning how to use a Legend and using it along with directions to find features on a map.
Learning objectives:
On completion of this lesson, students
will be able to:
(What will students know and be able to do
at the completion of the lesson specific,
concise and attainable objectives)
Use legends symbols on a map.
Use directions NESW in order to find their
way from one symbol from the legend to
another.

Evaluation:
(Explain how you will know that lesson
objective have been achieved / monitor
student learning)
Through monitoring the students
understanding of the topic with the answers
provided by the worksheet and the verbal
responses to questions asked through out
out the lesson.

Preparation and Resources:

(Detail what resources will be used and what other preparation of the learning environment
will be required)
1. Pre planning (Things I will set up before lesson)
Draw a small map on the white board with a legend box and a compass in the top
right corner.
Then in the legend box draw 3 things a Haunted house, treasure chest and a tall tree
and write the names of them next to their pictures so the students know what they
are and leave two spaces for the students to come up with two other things to put in
your legend and on you map marked with an x.
Then draw your 3 things on the map and put two xs in certain places so the students
can draw their 2 things of their choosing on the map and the legend.
Put blown up version of worksheet map on black board so student can see it from the
mat when done with intro activity.
2. Resources (Things I need)
30 Using a Legend and Direction to interpret a map work sheets
30 drawn up make your own map sheets (draw map)
1 A3 blow up map from Using a Legend and Direction to interpret a map
1 white board to pin it on
1 black board to draw my demonstration map
1 piece of chalk

Catering for diversity (detail any adjustments considerations for educational/resource

adjustments)

Extra map worksheet activity for those students who finish early and find the task
easy ( This will give time for students who need a little longer to finish the activity).
Carry around a poster note with info of students who seem to be struggling to make
a note for their mentor and also give over the shoulder help to those who cant do it
on their own.

Learning Experiences:
1.

Introduction: (How will I engage the learners?)

Sit students down on the mat in front of the white board so they can see
your drawing of the map up close and interact with it.

Introduce them to the topic and what its about (what are legends and how
can we use them and direction to interpret a map) Legends help us
identify what the symbols are on the map.

Explain that legends contain the description of all the symbols on the
map, that way when you see a symbol that you dont recognise and look
at the legend and it will tell you what it is.

Show them a symbol and then point at the description and picture of it on
the legend.

Then ask a convergent question (point to a symbol) so can any one tell me
what this symbol is using the legend?

Then move on and tell them that you going to add two symbols of their
choosing to your legend and map, and then ask for suggestions (only
students who put there hands up).

After this I will then demonstrate the next part of this activity, which is
using the symbols on the map, and legend I will show them how to
navigate through the map from one symbol to another using the
directions or compass points that they had previously learnt about.

We will do this using the compass I had previously drawn on the map in
which I will choose two points and demonstrate each movement along the
map and each direction we take in relation to the way the compass is set
out.

10min

20min

5min

Each stat point will be marked with a dot and a line will be drawn to go to
the next point at which another dot will be put to signal the end of a
movement.

After I have demonstrated that I will get the students to pick two points to
navigate between (that are a fare enough distance) and let them take
turns at marking each move through out the map and each direction they
take to get their marking NSEW as they go depending on which route they
take.

Once this is done I will ask them how they felt about doing that activity?
(Divergent question) then I will move on.

2. Sequence of learning experiences: (What will you do to help the students

achieve the learning objectives? What tasks and activities will the students be
involved in to help achieve the learning objectives?)

I will then draw the students attention to the blown up A3 size worksheet
map, which I will use to show them what they will be working on in their
worksheet.

I will show them that it has the same things as the other map, The legend,
the Compass and the set out but this one they must complete tasks on
their own through the worksheets given to them in relation to this map
and that these tasks are the same as what we have just done on the
board only slightly different and that they should only go up to question
3d.

After completing this they will be given another map but with only street
names, it will be up to them to write and draw 5 symbols with in the
legend and the map and then challenge them selves to navigate through
their own map of symbols navigating from one to the other.

If students go finish this then they can turn their maps over and on the
blank side of the paper draw there own map if they are they feel bold
enough to.

3. Lesson conclusion: (How will you summarize the learning and relate it to the
lesson objectives?)
To end this lesson I will gather them back on the matt to ask them a few
questions about how they found the activity.
Did you enjoy todays lesson? (Convergent)
What did you enjoy most about todays lesson? (Divergent)
Was there anything anyone found a bit hard to understand? (Divergent)
Can any one tell me what a Legend is? (Divergent)
What is a Legend used for? (Divergent)
Would you change anything about todays lesson?( Evaluative question)
If yes, why? (Evaluative)
Then conclude the lesson by thanking the class for their hard work and for having

you as their teacher.
