2015 Wood Byproducts Available and Needed

Introduction

Introduction
This directory presents information about the production and use of wood
byproducts, including sawdust, bark, chips, shavings, slabs, and edgings, in West
Virginia and areas of adjoining states where business is conducted in West Virginia.
These data were collected for a period during the summer of 2015 through a
mail survey of 159 primary and secondary wood products manufacturers and 80
potential users of wood byproducts.
The report and directory provide current information to producers and users of
these wood byproducts in order to enhance the available markets for wood residues
generated in the primary and secondary manufacturing industries.

In the survey, producers were

asked to specifically identify
wood byproducts available
during an average production
week and to identify the total
amount generated. A number
of producers responded to
the question by indicating
they had no wood byproducts
available for purchase; that is,
they had already established
markets for all of the wood
residue generated by their
manufacturing operation(s).
Responses to the initial and
follow up mailings of the
survey, totaled 47 producers
and 17 users. In 2015, those
WV companies responding to
the survey reported producing
20,927 tons (table 1) of wood
residue on a weekly basis.

and a lower response rate for this years survey with 9 fewer companies reporting
data. Continuing developments of new outlets and uses for wood residues have
maintained and even strengthened the primary and secondary residues as a valuable
product stream. This survey attempts to capture the produced wood residue,
however some producers do not choose to participate in this survey, but still
produce and market wood byproducts from their processing activities.
Other

Sawmills (primary industry) produced 73% of this residue, while just 27% was
produced by secondary manufacturers. In the primary industry segment, 36% of
the total residue produced were sawdust, followed by bark (33%) and chips (26%).
Secondary manufacturers reported that 45% of the total residue in WV produced
was sawdust and 54% was in the other category. Of the total residue produced,

Introduction

the majority was in sawdust form (38%), followed by bark at 24% and chips at 19%
each (Table 1 and Figure 1).

Price Analysis
Over the past number of years of this survey, data were collected on byproduct sales
price. These data included Freight On Board (FOB) prices for each of the different
woody byproduct type. Table 2 provides the average prices per ton for each of the
product types over the last seven years. In 2015, Chips were offered at the highest average dollar amount -- $31.06. Sawdust was the next most valuable at $22.62, while
bark was offered at $18.29. While chips saw noticeable increases in prices surpassing
the highest values seen in the past number of years, sawdust values only had minor
gains and values per ton of bark actually decreased.

Insights from Producers and Users

In addition to basic questions pertaining to the quantity and types of wood
byproducts available, a series of questions were presented to wood byproducts
producers about products and marketing. The results of these questions are
summarized in a series of charts (figs 10-16) that represent responses from producers of byproducts. The second series (figs 17-18) represent user responses.

Producer Insights
Half of the respondents actively marketed their wood byproducts (fig. 10) and
in general, very few (7%) felt that a lack of byproduct markets restricted their
companys production (fig. 11). Only 7% of responses indicated that their companys production had been restricted due to the cost of byproducts disposal
(fig. 12) confirming that disposal costs do not appear to be an overall problem.
When asked, what percent of your byproducts generate revenues? most
responses were above 80%. This category is easily identified on the bar chart
in figure 13. Over 53% of responses indicated all residues generated revenues
while 26% said no byproducts generated revenues.
The survey results indicate that the easiest wood byproduct for producers to
sell are chips (31%), followed by sawdust at 27% (fig. 14). Responses for the
most difficult byproduct to sell indicated bark and sawdust both at 29% (fig. 15).
Forty percent felt that sawdust was the easiest byproduct to give away, while

Introduction

Users Insights
Responses from users of wood byproducts seem to indicate that most
respondents have a reliable supply of byproducts (fig 18). However, 14% still
report that they do not have a reliable supply -- this value is steady over the last
two years..
Twenty-nine percent of wood byproduct users indicated that the cost of
purchasing byproducts has restricted production. Demand levels reported this
year are vastly different than in 2014 as one very large user did not respond to
the 2015 survey.
In the 2015 survey, byproduct producers indicated that the collective regional
production of wood byproducts is 22,387 tons per week and the user demand
matches well with the reported 17,158 tons per week. As demand for wood
byproducts continues, we may see increasing competition and opportunities
for new fiber supplies to enter into the market.

Introduction

WV Wood Industry Byproducts Website

http://ahc.wvu.edu/AHC_Resources/Residues/
In addition to publishing this director, the Appalachian Hardwood Center and the
WV Division of Energy have developed an interactive website for West Virginia
wood byproducts. The website provides a one stop place for producers, users, and
others interested in biomass opportunities to find relevant information.

Residue Finder Search Engine and Maps

Anyone searching for wood byproducts can click the button marked Residue
Finder in order to conduct a customized search for available byproducts. A
search of all mills for a fixed-radius around the selected city is possible. Once the
appropriate search terms have been identified and submitted, a report will be generated with the results.

Byproduct Listings
The following pages have been compiled to provide the different byproducts
produced and available and the companies that produce them. Companies are
listed in each byproduct section by state and county and include byproduct
species, amount produced, amount available and any comments. Full contact
information for the companies can be found in the Company Index section
starting on page 30.
