Opportunities for Extra Help: The English Department offers tutoring Monday through Thursday after school; additionally,
Mrs. Morris offers tutoring by appointment on those same days.
Course Description
This is a college-level course designed in accordance with the requirements of the College Board. Through this course, the students
become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts, and learn to become flexible writers
who can compose in a variety of modes and for a variety of purposes. The writing assignments include expository, analytical, and
argumentative essays. As the students read, they become aware of how authors from different periods and disciplines match their
rhetorical choices to particular aims.
Required Materials
Bring the following to each class:
*3-ring binder (1)
*assigned texts
*pens/pencils
*highlighter
*loose-leaf paper
*composition notebook
*a planner is recommended
*an AP test review book is recommended
Note: A box of tissues would be appreciated

Evaluation and Grading


Parents can view student grades by signing up for Parent Portal.
Students can access their grades via Student Portal. If you have not
already done so, please make sure your family is signed up for access
to Parent or Student Portal so you will have the ability to keep track of
your grades. Grades will be updated weekly.
Grades in this class will be categorized and calculated using a total
points system:

Major assignments will be worth 75-100 points.


Daily class work will be worth 10-50 points.
Quizzes will be worth 25-50 points.
Homework, if assigned, will be 10-30 points

NOTE: Students will have homework several nights per week.


Sometimes this homework will consist of reading. Completing this
reading is essential for class participation.
Make-up Work and Late Assignments
MAKE-UP WORK POLICY: If a student was excusably
absent, then he/she may make up his/her missed
assignments. Work should be submitted within three days
of the students return to school. Tests/quizzes should be
made up within one week of a students return. Students
should schedule an appointment with Mrs. Fok to make up a
test or quiz.
Students should check our Google Classroom site to find
make-up work. Students may also find hard copies of
missed work by checking the make-up work box.

Semester Rule
(VBCPS Policy)
Any student who misses more than six class periods will receive a 63/N
or the average he or she has earned if it is lower than 63. Attendance
will be taken within the first 15 minutes of each class. If you are not
present, you will be counted as absent.
Tardy Policy
Our class strictly adheres to the LHS tardy policy. All students who
arrive to class without a pass will be sent to the tardy station.
Any student who misses more than 15 minutes of a class will be counted
absent for that day.

LATE WORK POLICY: Students may not turn in late


classwork or homework. Essays/ projects may be turned in
late. However, there will be twenty point penalty per class
block for these late assignments. In order to avoid the late
penalty, students must turn in their assignments physically or
digitally regardless of whether or not they are in school that
day.
Parent Portal & Student Portal

Technology
Students must become familiar with Google Classroom where
assignments and announcements will often be posted.
Some homework assignments and projects will require the use of a
computer. If one is not available at home, students can use a
computer at school during Academic Support or before/after
school in the LMC.
SOL Test

Parents can view student grades by signing up for Parent


Portal. Students can access their grades via Student Portal.
If you have not already done so, please make sure your
family is signed up for access to Parent or Student Portal so
you will have the ability to keep track of your grades.

Students will take the Writing SOL Test in March (over two days) and the
Reading SOL Test in May.

Expectations

Course Outline

Students are expected to act in a respectful, honest, and


courteous manner to teachers, administrators, and
peers.
Students who cheat or plagiarize will receive a zero on
the assignment. Also, a phone call will be made to a
parent/ guardian, and possibly, a referral to the principal
may be written.
Students should adhere to all policies set forth by
Landstown High School and VBCPS at all times,
including when on class trips or when testing off-site.
These policies are outlined in the Student Live Binder.
Make-up work is work that students missed when they
were absent. It is not work that was assigned prior to
their absence. This work must be submitted on time
either digitally or physically on its due date.
Hall Pass Policy

It is the students responsibility to know


when is an appropriate time to leave the classroom for a
trip to the restroom. Fill out all hall pass information in
the sign-out log provided in the classroom.

The class will adhere to the school-wide


Take Five rule. Students will not be permitted to
leave the classroom the first and last five minutes of
class unless it is an emergency.

AP Exam
The AP test exam be given on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at 8 a.m. The
cost of the test is $93. Students who are eligible for a reduced fee
should contact the Guidance Office. Students who score a 3 or higher on
this test can potentially earn college credits. For more information on the

Students will study different modes of rhetoric including narrative,


persuasive, expository, and descriptive writing.
BYOD Procedures
Students will be allowed to utilize personal portable communication
devices in class for instructional purposes only when permitted by the
instructor. A green light indicates that devices may be used, and a red
light indicates that devices should be put away. Violations of the
guidelines will result in disciplinary action in accordance with the Student
Code of Conduct and school rules as outlined in the Student Live Binder.
