What is Shell Eco-Marathon?

The Shell Eco-Marathon is an international competition that challenges high school and college level students to build
an ultra-efficient vehicle. Teams design, build, and test vehicles throughout the year to prepare for the official event in
April, where the vehicles are driven around a racetrack and tested for fuel efficiency, for an opportunity to win various
awards.

The two categories

There are two vehicle types: Prototype group and the Urban Concept group. The prototype group has very few
restrictions on the vehicle allowing students the freedom to experiment for fuel-efficiency, while the Urban Concept
requires the car to be practical on the road with front and rear lights, mirrors and windshield wipers and other
essentials.

Our team history and achievements

Where it all began
In 2015 two Troy High students saw an advertisement for the Shell Eco-marathon in a local magazine and attended the
2015 Shell Eco-marathon at the Cobo center in Detroit. Excited by what they saw, the students recruited their fellow
classmates, and the Troy High Shell Eco-marathon team was created.

Rough patches along the road

Due to budget issues, Troy High School refused to make the Shell-Eco team an official club in 2015. Without support
from the school or from any sponsors, we were forced to improvise. We scoured through metal scrapyards and used
recycled metal to create most of our vehicle. Without a faculty advisor from Troy High School, our team was forced to
manage everything on our own.

A helping hand
Our situation changed near the end of the summer when our team attended a meeting hosted by Shell. We met many
leaders and mentors from seasoned Shell Eco-marathon teams who kindly offered us important advice. One team
leader that contributed greatly in helping our team was Mr. Ricky Lewis of Dudley High School, Greensboro, NC who
provided our team with two Honda engines to help us out in our first year participating in Shell Eco-marathon.

2016 Shell Eco-marathon Competition

The whole team was thrown into dismay when the basement storing our vehicle flooded eleven days before the
competition. Many parts of the car were destroyed due to the incident, forcing the team to rebuild most of the car from
scratch. However, with the determination of many students and help from Dudley High School and other teams in the
competition, we were fortunate to finish the vehicle in time for inspection and racing. Even though the odds were
stacked against us as a high school team, we were still able to pull through and win the Spirit of the Event and

Perseverance award in addition to a $2,000 sum of money.

After the competition

The victory in the 2016 competition gave our team new morale, recognition and a new sense of confidence. To prepare
for the 2017 competition, our team is busy reaching out to local sponsors and asking for support from the Troy School
District. We also plan on starting an Urban Concept team in addition to our Prototype Gasoline team. With funding and
support paired up with our hard work, perseverance, and time management, we have a very real shot to win at the 2017
Shell Eco-marathon.

Future Plans
Besides preparing our vehicle for the 2017 Shell Eco-marathon, there is a plethora of things that we would like to do
this year from new member recruitment to community outreach. Here are many of the things we plan on doing that
are important to our team.

Recruitment of new members and starting new teams

For the 2017 Shell Eco-marathon we have decided to branch out into the Urban Concept class of the competition to
promote new membership and expand our organization. Throughout the 2016-2017 school year we plan on recruiting
and training up to ten more rookie members to our two teams to ensure capable leadership in the coming years.

Community outreach events

In addition to recruitment events in our school, we plan to engage in a plethora of outreach events equipped with our
vehicle to inspire the community about the field of engineering. This school year, we plan to hold outreach events to
showcase our vehicle, our CAD drawings, and engage in other kinds of hands-on experiences, at various local
elementary schools including Bemis Elementary, Martell Elementary, Hamilton Elementary, and Leonard Elementary
schools.

University and Industry visits

Our organization can find many opportunities for educational visits to engineering hotspots in Michigan, including
universities such as UM and MSU as well the many local auto companies such as GM, Chrysler, and Ford. We plan on
scheduling visits to universities and industrial plants to speak with professors and professionals, to see real-life
engineering in action, and most importantly gain knowledge that can be applied to our Shell Eco-marathon vehicle.

Our future with YOU

Whether we are working on our vehicle or participating in outreach events, our team depends on YOU our sponsors.
By sponsoring our organization, you are helping to spread innovation, knowledge, and inspiration in engineering and
various other fields not only to the students in our community, but to people from all over the world participating in the
Shell Eco-marathon competition. Thus, we hope you will support our organization in this upcoming season.

Our Values
Through our years of experience as a Shell Eco-Marathon team, and respect to each others core beliefs, we have
created a list of ideals that we feel best represents the team and our vision. Below are the values influencing our
decision-making process, which we believe will lead to success for our team.

To accomplish greater goals, we must:

Have strong enforcement of safety regulations
Innovate and learn from mistakes
Provide a learning experience in various fields

To attract, support, motivate and retain a great team, we must:

Foster an environment of respect and inclusiveness
Eliminate bureaucracy and ensure equal opportunity
Be open and honest with ourselves and teammates

To form an excellent team image and reach out to our community, we must:
Administer community events promoting awareness to engineering
Show exceptional sportsmanship and professionalism

To accomplish greater goals, we must:

Have strong enforcement of safety regulations
The safety of our team members and people around us is our first priority. This means to maintain a clean environment
which emphasizes protocols that ensures minimal risk of danger or bodily harm. To achieve this, our team has
designated workshops to ensure that safety goggles and gloves are used when necessary, tools are used properly, and
to keep a clean environment. It is the integrity of each member to remind others and make sure these safety policies
are followed.

Innovate and learn from mistakes

To maintain this organization and develop an edge over the competition, we must have the ability to adapt and innovate
as different circumstances arise. Thus we must create an organization that can sustain itself and continuously becomes
better year after year as efficiently as possible.

Provide a learning experience in various fields

Our goal in this organization is to provide all students participating with a practical understanding of a wide range of
topics. We hope all students will take away something valuable from this experience that will help them later on in life.
With this in mind, all members are encouraged to take part in a variety of roles ranging from financial to build. We also
have access to trained professional contacts that help assist in various subject areas, as well as student led workshops
educating team members on engineering themed subjects. With these actions we hope to achieve our end goal of
preparing students for a spectrum of subjects.

To attract, support, motivate and retain a great team, we must:

Foster an environment of respect and inclusiveness
Made up of a core of friends, we know an awful lot about respect. It is the substance that facilitates the flow of ideas
within the organization and is essential for us to be successful. Also crucial is to be open and inclusive to the new and
old members alike so that no members feel left out of the project. This open minded attitude, we hope, will promote
the free flow of ideas, as well as motivation in all team members to perform their best.

Eliminate bureaucracy and ensure equal opportunity

One of the main objectives of our team is to ensure that every member has experiences in every part of the process in
building our vehicle and maintaining our team, including fundraising, design, fabrication, testing, and community
outreach. Our reasons for this is to promote team unity, promote equal opportunity, reduce bureaucracy, and help
create lasting experiences. Due to the small number of students per vehicle team, we have found this organization to
be both manageable, efficient, and rewarding based on the knowledge and experience each member has gained. While
appropriate rules and procedures is critical to maintaining a disciplined organization, excessive rules serve as
boundaries; reducing productivity, cutting down on creativity and limiting initiative. Everything we as an organization
are against.

Be open and honest with ourselves and teammates

Honesty is more than just our policy; it is a part of us, ingrained in our DNA. We, as a whole understand that only by
being honest to ourselves and others can we grow as a team and as individuals. Dishonestly promotes a cycle of
negativity and cheating, a culture a small organization such as ourselves cannot afford to have.

To form an excellent team image and reach out to our

community, we must:
Administer community events promoting awareness to engineering
To ensure the availability of young, inspired minds for our team in the future, as well as spread knowledge about
engineering to communities outside of our school, we believe in a variety of outreach events. At our events occurring at
elementary schools, bookstores, and other public places, our team offers a variety of fun and engaging activities for the
general public pertaining our experiences in the Shell Eco-Marathon. We feel that these events are important
contributions for our community as well as a good opportunity to gain recognition for our team.

Show exceptional sportsmanship and professionalism

While the competition is one aspect of Shell Eco-Marathon, it is important to show courtesy and sportsmanship to other
teams. Simple acts of kindness such as lending tools and helping out a team in need is adds to the spirit of the
competition and creates better team-to-team relationships.
