Global Impact Grid: 99impact

There are 7.2 billion people now in the world, and that is expected to increase to
9.6 billion by 2050. That density of population will affect all of life: climate change,
water supply, pollution of various sorts, deforestation, availability of adequate food,
inadequate housing, carbon footprint, availability of work for everyone. This calls
for new mindsets for those who are in a position of being able to create
(Create wealth maybe notthe best optiongenerate wealth and
innovate?)wealth and innovation.
Instead of merely working for their own needs, the millennial generation and
generation Z seek to have an impact on other peoples lives. In light of the
challenges we face today we want people, primarily young peoplemen and women,
thato believe that they can contribute to a solution no matter how far or unfamiliar
thea problem by first recognizing that they must be part of the solution. We believe
there are people wanting to make a difference, many whom dont know how or
what problems actually can be solved by (everyday citizens?--- I think your
audience is you are driving to influence are the people that want but dont think they
can make a difference?? Is this true?) . Global Impact Grid provides these people
with a clear communication of a problems urgency and its ability to be solved,
making them aware that we cant afford to stand idly by. 99impact ?? Who/what is
this? is a bold step ahead of traditional ways of communicating problems, because
journalism only goes as far as asking who, what, where and why, we ask what will
we do about it? Our (ability to unpack problems?? And narrow them down in such a
way that the reader or client or solution leaders?? active voice) unpacking of
problems aim to be narrowed enough to convince the reader that some creativity
and expertise can bring about solutions but broad enough to allow various
approaches to the problem solving process. Our parameters (dont personify
parameters?)are keen on not trying to allow freedom from address political or
cultural stigmas and instead use our framinghelp to frameof the problem and to
leverage design technology and innovative systems thinking. The core of our
platform is a list of 99 pressing problems that are unpacked,
broken down and communicated to young men and women
who have the will and skills to create innovative solutions.
Design thinking and systems thinking are just a few of the mind sets (frameworks)
we wish to promote adhere to because we believe they it help to can
empoweempower and promote growthr anybody mindsets, regardless of
background and location to give pressing problems the creative attention required
for creating solutions. Design thinking is a problem solving method that is
fundamentally different from other ways of meeting challenges because it
is human-centered. It requires a crucial shift ofby focusing not on your own needs
but on those of the people who would benefit from be using the solution. The focus
is on through productive empathy. Systems thinking is an approach that goes hand
in hand with Desing thinking and is also an approach which helps young
peoplehelps one to understand the complexity of the world around them and
encourages an them to think holistic approach to understadingal ly in terms of
relationships, connectedness, and context. Problem solving resources will be
readily available to those seeking to solve our featured complex problems
and wide range of educational programs will be promoted for those
considering a career of meaningful social impact.
In order to further inspire action we believe that one should be able to access a
community of change makers and identify people based on their location,

to LinkedIn. In addition to our community page, one can also find specific expertise

easy for you to not only find and but to be found, so that together, we can

Peruvian Oil Spill:

Recently, the Amazon River and its indigenous communities have suffered
from two oil spills that released more than 3000 barrels (477,000 liters) of
oil into its largest tributaries. A third oil spill has been confirmed towards the
end of June. These three oil spills have been contaminating about eight
indigenous communities that rely on these rivers for food and water. Further
controversy sparked after BBC World News reported the responsible
company, PetroPeru, deploying underage indigenous children to carry out
hands-on operations with no protection.
Though these spills are no rare occasion. There have been 23 oil spills
reported since 2011 in Peruvian Amazon, according to the ombudsmans
office. The Federation of Indigenous Communities of the Corrientes River
(FECONACO) filed a report in 2011 that there have been more than 90 oil
spills since 2009. Victor Palomino, head of the cleaning operation, says that
the spills are inevitable accidents that will continue to occur. This
inevitability therefore illustrates the need for creative attention for
developing innovative cleanup methods for the Amazon. Considering a
former Peruvian President has promised 70% of the amazon to oil and gas
company exploration, there must be better ways of combating oil spills in
the Amazonian river context instead of buckets and sacks, and the
occasional 10 year old.

What is the problem or need?

o

Oil spills are contaminating the Amazons most important tributaries and
affecting indigenous communities in addition to the environmental destruction.

Global Impact Grid: 99impact

o

There is a need of innovative operations to clean oil spills more time efficiently,
effectively, and responsibly.

Who has the problem or need?

o

Oil companies operating (and those soon to operate 70% of the Amazon given
by the Peruvian Government). Communities that rely on the river for food and
water. The world who will depend on the health of the forest in the long run.

Why is it important to solve?

o

We cannot rely on the corporations accountability of these issues.

The environmental impact is incalculable but undeniably severe to biodiversity

and impoverished indigenous communities that rely on these environments for
life.

We cant go on living here, said Melita Bela Celis. They say the oil will last for
30 or 40 years. We cant eat the fish any more, so what will we live on for all
those years?

American Police Brutality

2016 is far from over, and the first 6 months have brought about
considerable international attention to American Police brutality. The media,
political activist groups, and a number of peaceful (and not so peaceful)
protests have brought to light the racial/socioeconomic dimension in this
pressing problem. The release of cell phone footage and Facebook live
streams have also raised the question of whether there are more severe
cases of police brutality or just more evidence of seemingly common unjust
treatment.
The question has also been raised whether we can rely on Police Body
Cameras. Not only have there been death cases which involved a police
body cam to accidentally fall off and somehow turn off, but now new
laws are pushing to restrict access to police footage by holding them under
authority custody. This has very worrisome implications on our knowledge of
future cases that could involve the arrest or death of people who may not
have deserved such treatment. This commentary on Earledreka Whites
arrest demonstrates the limitations of relying on street cameras, and the
Chicago police officer that fatally shot an unarmed African American has
raised concerns for relying on Police body cameras. So the question now
rises, what can we do as citizens to responsibly take our encounters with
police into our own hands without provoking the authority and heightening
the risk of force? Cell phone videos have made many police shootings and
unjustified use of force mainstream, and now more people who feel insecure
or threatened feel the need to take their cellphones out when stopped by a
police. However, you can find many cases online of police shooting unarmed

men mistaking their cell phones for weapons. For this reason, we dont
believe cell phones or even apps should be the final answer to this question.
We do think that there is an opportunity for new design solutions that can be
less provoking and more reliable than cell phones and police body cameras.

What is the problem or need?

o

Who has the problem or need?

o

More frequent cases of police brutality and unmerited shootings have

raised the demands for ways of making video evidence more
accessible, less threatening, and reliable.

Primarily low income African Americans.

Why is it important to solve?

o

The solutions we have now, police body cameras and cell phones, have
occasionally proven effective in gaining mainstream attention however
new cases reveal that they are increasingly unreliable and some studies
report them to actually increase use of force by 70%.
