Saturday Horticulture Landscaping Course

Description: This course will strengthen the students' knowledge of science
and give them a better understanding of the environment, plant growth,
plant classification and identification, and landscaping. Students will learn
the fundamentals of gardening, including how to create and care for all types
of plants and flowers, then provide a thorough introduction on all aspects
and techniques of professional landscaping. Fostering lifelong learning by
applying practical and hands-on skills to the horticulture curriculum, while
developing an appreciation for nature. Traditionally Chaffey Joint Union
Students care for the Valley View Nursery by growing new plant material as
well as maintaining grounds and existing plant material. The Valley View
Nursery provides plant material to all Chaffey Joint Union Schools and sales
plants material to the local community as well as local nurseries. This year
we will be introducing Quality Water Conservation and Efficient Landscape
Certification aka QWEL! For the first time students will be able to earn a
certification in efficient landscaping as well as learn about water
conservation as well as how and where Southern California gets its water.
Expectations and goals:
Goal 1- To foster lifelong learning
Goal 2- To apply practical, hands-on skills to the horticulture and landscape
curriculum.
Goal 3- To promote teamwork, leadership, and knowledge in the
horticulture/landscape career area.
Goal 4- Earn QWEL Certification.
Noted: ALL students are expected to do their personal best, ACTIVE
PARTICIPATION is required at all times. Each student has the ability to pass.
Students are graded on active class participation, class hours obtained,
weekly assignments as well as QWEL Certification. Homework includes QWEL
PowerPoint notes, definitions, and chapter worksheets.

Students must have ClOSED SHOES, GLOVES, WATER and HAT. I highly
recommend that all students eat prior to class, and apply sunscreen prior to
the start of class.
Standard Grading Scale:
A = 90 100
B = 80 89
C = 70 79
D = 60 69
F = Below 60

Students grading scale is based upon the Standard Grading scale and
QWEL homework along with active participation hours worked
throughout the Semester. Attendance is extremely important, FOUR
ABSCENCES results in a withdrawal from class, unless student has an
excused absences!
There will be QWEL assignments assigned throughout the semester!
Students will be provided QWEL notebooks, all PowerPoints and study
guides will also be provided through School Loop.
Students are awarded 5 credits for every 70 hours worked. Students
will have the opportunity to obtain extra hours by working during
Thanksgiving Break and Winter Break.
As always for those students needing more hours the Internship
Program will be made available! Students are required to work
weekends, Thanksgiving Break, and Winter Break. Students will not
work on Holidays! If students join the Internship they will be placed at
a Nursery of open availability. The Internship program has been
available to Chaffey Joint Union Students since the program was
started. Students are to abide by all Chaffey Joint Union school rules.
Students are not permitted to site once they arrive! Students are
required to bring their own drink and lunch. This is a real Internship!
Students are required to arrive on time and are not permitted to leave
until released by their employer. Work hard and be respectful
numerous students have gained employment after completion of the
internship.
