STATIC EVENTS:
Design Report: The students explain their constructive solutions to a jury of experts from the
automotive and motorsport industries in report and discussion. The concept of the design is
to evaluate the engineering effort that went into the design of the car and how the engineering meets the intent of the market. The car that illustrates the best use of engineering to meet
the design goals and the best understanding of the design by the team members will win the
design event.
Cost Report: The students are to assume that a serial production of 1000 cars a year will follow the prototype. The cost calculation is discussed with a jury based on a report. The objective of the event is for the participants to learn and understand the manufacturing techniques
and processes of some of the components that they have chosen to purchase rather than
fabricate themselves.
Presentation: The objective is to evaluate the teams ability to develop and deliver a comprehensive business case that will convince the executives of a fictional manufacturing firm that
the teams design best meets the demands of the amateur weekend competition market and
that it can be profitably manufactured and marketed.
DYNAMIC EVENTS:
Acceleration: The cars are evaluated on their
accelerating abilities from a standing start
over a distance of 75 meters.
Autocross: The objective is to evaluate the
cars maneuverability and handling qualities
on a tight course without the hindrance of
competing cars. The course will combine the
performance features of acceleration, braking
and cornering into one event. The results of
the Autocross scores determine the starting
order for endurance.

This years vehicle, the F15 marks the implementation of our first ever aerodynamics package as well as pneumatic shifting system. The holistic design
approach of this years vehicle was to integrate the effects of the aerodynamics
package into other systems. Many changes were also made to increase the
serviceability, packaging and overall ergonomics of the vehicle as a whole.
In remembrance of Khalil Mohmed.
The FSAE Unicamp team achieved several titles during our history in Brazil, and
now, after two competitions in Lincoln, will participate for the first time in Michigan with our most innovative vehicle, the F2014.
Its main features focus on packaging and lightness. A 25kg weight reduction from
the previous prototype ensured a significant improvement in performance in track.
Our freedom in the ECU software and a reliable Powertrain system result in
a great acceleration and driveability in parallel with a suspension accurately
adjusted. The implementation of high-tech materials such as HSLA steel helps us
to produce a high competitive level car with only 197kg.
We would like to thank all of our sponsors, without whom none of this would be
possible. The support from the university and family was and will be always essential to our achievements as well.

The TU Graz Racing team can look back on the past years with pride. With the
Tankia 2004 we achieved podium places in Germany, Italy as well as the UK.
Due to our close contact with our alumni regarding development and construction of each new TANKIA, our hopes and goals are high every year. The newest
member of our family is the TANKIA 2014. Our main goal was to produce a highly
competitive as well as reliable vehicle, while sticking to a lightweight concept thus
increasing the power to weight ratio and also reducing fuel consumption. By using
carbon fibre, be it as reinforcement in our single piece monocoque, our rims or
suspension parts, we achieve a total racing weight below 160kg.Combined with
our single cylinder KTM engine with an additional injector in the airbox resulting in
62 bhp a great driving performance is achieved. Reliability was improved by using
a cooler test bench to get the greatest possible cooling performance from our
engine which was calibrated on our test bench at AVL. Since the formula student
is not just about performance we also concentrate on the presentation, design
and cost events, every point can decide between the top 10 or the top 3 rank.

For the 2015 FSAE season, Navy Racing has taken a significant departure from
our last years of competition. For 2015, we have taken simplicity, cost, and drivability into greater account and the result is NR15.
NR15 features a full spaceframe chassis intended to reduce build and maintenance costs, increase access to key components, all while maintaining a similar
weight to our previous monocoque designs. Also new for 2015 is our powerplant.
We have made the switch to a Yamaha Genesis 80Fi out of a Phazer Snowmobile.
We made the jump to the Genesis due to its integrated CVT which was chosen for
its aid to drivability.
Our team is comprised of Naval Academy Senior Mechanical and General
Engineers. After graduation, we will commission as Officers into the US Navy and
Marine Corps or a foreign nations service.

The 2015 Ferris State University Bulldog Racing team is proud to present the latest product of its engineering efforts: the FFR9. Primary objectives in this design
are reliability, ease of maintenance, refinement, and performance accessibility.
Notable revisions compared to the FFR8 car include the use of a four-cylinder
powertrain, a revised drivetrain, and the introduction of an aerodynamics package.
Chassis, suspension, and steering systems, as well as running gear selection
have been revisited to accommodate these performance alterations. In addition,
ergonomic parameters have been adjusted to improve the drivers perception and
control of the FFR9s performance capabilities.
Brown University
FSAE
Our focus for 2015 is to improve upon our designs from previous years by analyzing the failures and successes of past vehicles. We designed a more reliable and
drivable vehicle while adding additional data processing capabilities, to improve
our tuning ability and allow our vehicle to serve as a test-bed for future years.
We also designed the vehicle with the goal of promoting design for manufacture
and assembly, reducing time spent in the shop and giving us more time to tune
and train in the car. The team additionally continued to work towards its goal of
enabling amateur drivers to take full advantage of the cars potential. Throughout
the year, the team used computer simulations, subsystem testing, and full-scale
data logging to study and improve vehicle performance.
Bulldog Racing would like to thank its many sponsors and supporters for their
generous contributions to the development of the FFR9.

Mizzou Racing
Mizzou Racing is proud to introduce our 2015 entry into Formula SAE. Building on almost 30 years of Mizzou Formula SAE history, we have designed a car
that champions reliability and drivability, while also embracing creativity and
innovation, testing our engineering limits. Sarting with the bullet-proof Honda CBR
600RR, we have produced a formidable power train that reliably produces a supply of relentless bur controllable power. We also focused heavily on putting that
power to use. The use of Hoosier tires demands that our suspension be highly
optimized to squeeze out every last bit of performance, so a premium was placed
on maintaining optimum camber angles, and reducing tire load fluctuation.

Lafayette Motorsports
Lafayette Motorsports 2015 used the 2014 teams full car redesign as a
foundation, allowing for sub-systems to be iterated and improved upon. Aiming
to improve on weight reduction from 2014, the 2015 team challenged itself with
a goal of 400 lb. without a driver. To do this, carbon fiber was introduced in the
systems, including steering and suspension, to remove unnecessary weight. The
car features an auto-clutch manual shifter and is powered by a Honda TRX 450R
engine with a fully programmable ECU. Improvement upon our design justifications was a focus this year and was aided by dynamometer testing on the engine
as well as tensile testing carbon fiber a-arms, push/pull rods and tie rods. Thank
you to all our supporters this year, specifically Dr. Scott Hummel, Monticello Motor
Club, Serena Ashmore, Rob Layng and all the technicians.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville presents its 4th FSAE competition entry.
This year, the team decided to keep the main components as simple as possible.
This means a space frame chassis using SAE 1010 steel. Ten inch wheels are
wrapped in Hoosier R25B tires. The standard double wishbone setup was used,
with the suspension acting directly on the lower control arms.
Then engine is a 2008 Honda TRX450ER single cylinder, which has been modified
and is currently at 501cc. Fuel delivery is through the factory Keihin 40mm carburetor, due to the simplicity and ease of tuning it provides us.
Power is delivered to the wheels through a Torsen differential with a chain driven
sprocket. A final drive ratio of 3.33:1, in combination with our 10 inch wheels
and the factory Honda transmission, was chosen to keep the engine in a more
desirable RPM range. The trade-off to this is a higher number of shifts, so an
off-the-shelf electronic shift system was used with push button activation on the
steering wheel.
Formula SIUE expects to achieve its highest result this year, and to use the teams
progress as a catalyst for success in the future.
University of Connecticut
Uconn
UConn Formula SAE is proud to present its 2015 entry to the Formula SAE
Michigan competition. It is the seventh racecar produced by the team and was
constructed with a philosophy revolving around simplicity in design, subtle system
optimization, and high quality workmanship. The team focuses on optimizing
designs to leverage casting and other high volume production methods and
simplifying systems through consolidation of components.
The vehicle is a tubular alloy steel space frame with infused carbon fiber stressed
panels for increased torsional rigidity and weight reduction through tubing
removal. It runs on 10 inch wheels and employs conventional twin, unequal
length wishbone suspension. Magnesium and aluminum castings are used for
the uprights, steering rack, and hub/spindle/wheel center assembly. It is powered
by a slightly modified 4-cylinder Suzuki GSX-R600 motor featuring increased
compression, a slipper clutch, and three speed transmission. Novel changes for
2015 include incorporation of a Syvecs S8 engine control unit, simplified and
streamlined electrical system, and longitudinally split cast magnesium steering
rack housing.

Making its way to the 2015 Formula SAE Michigan Competition is our very own
NUS FSAE Race Car, NUS-R15.
Extensive simulation and testing resulted in an engine that produced a flatter
torque curve and more horsepower as compared to the previous car. In addition,
numerous ontrack and lab tests reduced the cars shift time. An all new student
built wireless telemetry system has aided the team in driver training and in
monitoring vital vehicle parameters. With the aid of computational fluid dynamics
(CFD), aerodynamics was implemented to improve overall traction. With clever
packaging and new designs, reliability was not compromised while reducing the
center of gravity (CG) height and weight.
We would like to thank the university and all the sponsors as this car will not be
possible without their support.

was redesigned in step with the throttle body for improved flow performance.
Testing was once again a priority, with ample time given to prove reliability while
increasing driver performance. The combination of these changes provide Old
Dominion with a more competitive vehicle for the 2015 competition.

Our primary team goals are to complete all dynamic events and rank within the
top 50 teams in overall scoring. To accomplish this we have chosen to continue
developing our single cylinder concept car with an emphasis on simplicity and
doing things better. Because we are a relatively young team this concept will allow
us to achieve our goals while not exceeding our level of resources and experience. Statistical analysis of the dynamic event results from 2012 to 2014 was
used in major target setting. Point mass analysis was then used to simultaneously
identify the general performance requirements for each system. Each team then
developed there systems based on those requirements resulting in a car in which
systems complement each other while staying true to our concept. Because the
car is an iteration of last years car, there was also a strong emphasis on improving existing designs and correcting issues that were identified during design
judging.

The 2015 Bronco Racing car was developed with the idea of simplicity and the
refinement of previous cars. The heart and soul of the 2015 car is a 450 CC
Yamaha single cylinder engine linked to a cam and pawl differential. The suspension utilizes non-parallel, unequal length A-arms constructed from 4130 alloy
steel. The geometry responds to the action of a dynamic pull-rod system. A 4130
steel tube space-frame was designed for a more compact engine compartment
as well as shortening the front of the frame from past years to help balance the
car better. The time and preparation of the 2015 Bronco Racing car will result in
improved vehicle reliability, drivability and overall performance.

F2015 represents the tenth Formula SAE vehicle produced by USF Racing since
beginning the FSAE series in 2005, and is the fifth evolution of our current design
concept. The following goals were created by the team preceding the design
process: improvement of serviceability, further development of an aerodynamic
wing package, and an overall weight of 330 lb (to match the weight of our lightest
non-aero car, F2013). We placed an emphasis on validating design simulation
through real-world testing. Based off of the successes of previous models, F2015
runs a naturally aspirated Suzuki LT-R 450 single cylinder engine with bore and
stroke modifications, steel axles, and 10-inch wheels. Integrating last years
chassis packaging with improvements in the suspension and engine systems, the
refinement of an aerodynamics package, as well as building on a successful history in static events, we hope we have created a car which continues to perform
aggressively across all events in the FSAE competition.

The main focus of the WU2015 was to refine previous designs in order to
maximize testing time before competition. This year, an emphasis was placed on
optimizing the designs of previous years and acquiring data that can be utilized
in order to develop a better understanding of the dynamics of our vehicle. For the
first time, we are collecting data from both wheel speed sensors and shock-pots
to be analyzed in suspension tuning. In addition to vehicle dynamics, we are also
improving the WU2015s powertrain by utilizing engine modeling software to gain
a better understanding of the workings of our intake, engine and exhaust. We
are using data collected through theoretical simulations in order to design our
intake and engine controls. For 2015, we have also utilized CFD to optimize intake
design.

Our UT15 vehicle was designed to be light, simple and fast. The steel-tube
chassis was optimized for stiffness and reduced manufacturing time. The vehicle
dynamics were optimized by reducing camber change in roll and shortening the
wheelbase to reduce yaw inertia. Machined rims and investment-cast aluminum
uprights reduce unsprung weight. Our adjustable pedal tray has been made
smaller and lighter than previous years by using radially mounted master cylinders and machined aluminum pedals. Engine design began with 1-D simulation
with the goal of producing a broad power band. Both exhaust and cooling systems
were re-evaluated and drastically improved. The electrical system has been
expanded to provide more driver aids and more data logging capability. We look
forward to putting UT15 to the test at FSAE Michigan.

This year the Aces Racing team has started from the bottom with a completely
new design called the AR15. The AR15 has a completely new drivetrain, suspension and chassis design due to continual use of 10" wheel size. The team took
a more in-depth study into aerodynamic systems resulting in a teams second
functional under tray assembly. The AR15 achieved a low vehicle weight less
than 370 pounds thanks to 10" wheels as well as the new chromoly chassis and
premanufactured carbon tubing utilized in the double wishbone suspension. Driver
ergonomics were also addressed through a team designed steering wheel. Driver
interface includes engine speed indicator lights as well as coolant, oil pressure,
gear selection, and ECU warning lights.
The Formula SAE Team from the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) competes in FSAE Michigan for 10th year. After a break, in 2011, the Team developed
a major change on the overall concept of the car, and this year proudly presents
the UCV-15. Being the 2014 its most successful year yet, the Team have made
great improvements for this season, such as a better development of the powertrain, a more reliable electric system, weight reductions and more testing time
for making adjustments to our configurations. The Team have great expectation
for this anniversary year, and looks forward to see all the other teams in the MIS.
Good luck to everyone!
We thank all our sponsors, which have made this project possible.
Another focus on the AR15 vehicle was vehicle testing. With a first run in February

After a successful 2014 car meeting or exceeding every goal we had set, we
decided to take a more aggressive step towards weight reduction and aerodynamics. The 2015 car marks the first stage in a two year process to integrate a
full aerodynamics package, with upgrades to the body panels and diffuser going
to competition this year. The dependable reliability of the 2014 car allowed for
more aggressive weight reduction in suspension components, and for suspension
setup justification.
Our frame is a derivative of a platform that started in 2011, constructed of 4130
chromoly with bonded carbon fiber structural panels. The powerplant is a Yamaha
R6. All suspension components were refined for a total weight reduction of over
15lbs. The rear suspension has been changed to pushrod style in favor of packaging and tenability with the front remaining pull rods. The intake will now utilize
carbon fiber for improved high end power and reduced weight.

Duke Universitys 2015 Formula SAE racecar is a significant step forward for the
organization, with an overarching theme of refining all vehicular subsystem components focusing on weight reduction, innovative improvements, and subsystem
tuning and optimization. Through theoretical modeling and on-vehicle testing and
validation, it was determined that downsizing to 10 inch wheels proved to be the
best use of resources to improve the vehicles overall racing performance. The
2014 FSAE Michigan competition vehicle performed well in each of the dynamic
events, but the largest constraints on its overall performance were the vehicle
weight and proper engine and suspension tuning. The 2014 vehicle features a
strong design in which all vehicular subsystem components complement each
other and have been tuned to their full capacity for maximum track performance
on a highly capable racecar.

Minnesota State has participated in FSAE for many years. This year our teams
approach changed. Typically the car is totally redesigned every year, but the
emphasis this year is to start a legacy project, largely revising designs rather than
starting from scratch, and using past knowledge to improve design. The 2015
MNSU FSAE car aims to accelerate, brake, and corner faster than last years car
by improving the design. The frame is made of 4130 chromoly on which the
front pullrod and rear pushrod suspension points were lowered from last years
high position. Tire data was examined to create our suspension points and base
spring rates. The braking system was largely reused, however master cylinders
were mounted lower, and the mechanical advantage was revised. This years car
is also equipped with wings and an undertray to increase the normal load on the
tire, generating more grip. The engine is a single cylinder 2015 Yamaha YFZ450R
engine, with a Garrett MGT-1238 that is water cooled. The engine uses an aluminum intake plenum and opposed flow injection to cool the intake charge.
North Carolina State Universitys 2015 Formula SAE car will be our quickest car
yet. With an all-new space-frame design, the WMF2015s chassis will be the stiffest in Wolfpack Motorsports history. This years car will be more agile, with its
increased stiffness and shortened wheelbase. Main suspension design changes
include a switch from pull-rod suspension to push-rod suspension. Suspension
components have also been optimized to save weight over last years WMF2014.
Suspension design was optimized with kinematic and dynamic software. Our
aerodynamic package is Wolfpack Motorsports first comprehensive package
with a front and rear wing and a full length diffuser. Design and analysis show
that WMF2015 will create more downforce than WMF2014. Drivetrain components have been refreshed to minimize unnecessary forces on our chassis. This
years engine will be mated with a Garrett turbocharger and fueled by E85. Major
change include the throttle bodys position post turbo. Overall WMF2015 should
be our strongest and quickest car Wolfpack Motorsports has seen in many years.

The main thing about UQAC formula SAE is the reliability. Since 2012, the car is
built from the same concepts but have been optimized over the years. Also the car
uses a CVT transmission which make it very easy for anybody to drive. There is
also a lot of adjustments that can be made with the suspension and the drivetrain
to accommodate the driver in different conditions. One more thing is that in general, the fabrication of the vehicle is fairly simple and not very expensive.

Universite Du Quebec-Chicoutimi
Our team places its emphasis on three aspect when designing the formula car:
reliability, durability, and easily maintained. With that being said, all parts will have
a minimum safety factor of 2.5 under maximum load. Also the car will have common parts in a sense, the car can be repaired using common tools.
A 500cc Yamaha Phazer snowmobile engine was donated for the 2015 SCSU
formula car. The Phazer is fuel injected and liquid cooled, and it came with the
CVT and oil cooler. For FSAE competition, a 20mm restrictor is required to pull air
through in the intake.
This years frame has a flat bottom, avoiding excessive bottoming that occurred in
previous cars. A disadvantage to having a flat bottom is the clearance of uneven
ground, but the FSAE track is primarily level. Also the frame design simplifies
manufacturing. The frame was constructed using 1 OD, 0.109 wall 1020 steel
tubing.
The suspension was redesign to keep all damping force tangential to the rotation
axis, which eliminates unnecessary bearing loads and increases the durability of
the bell crank rockers. Also Fox VANRC coil over shocks were used.

2015 marks the beginning of the road for the GVSU Formula Racing Team.
Receiving generous support from our university, faculty advisors and our growing
list of sponsors we have been able to construct a car worthy to join the Laker
Racing family. Laker Racing has been around since the early 2000s competing in
the Baja event. However the Baja team has since been disbanded and the torch
has been passed to the newly formed Formula SAE Team. With growing support
towards our team we have seen much success over the past 12 months.
Being this is our first year as a team our design focused on simplicity and reliability while trying to maintain as much performance as possible. Our electrical
components are kept to a minimum and our chassis and suspension designs are
simple with reliability being a driving factor. This car is built to excel in long races
where the durability of other vehicles typically fails. If a car cannot finish a race, it
cannot win.
Rather than trying to reinvent the wheel, several larger components of the car
such as the chassis and several suspension pieces were used from a few other
universities who helped us along with the design process. This allowed us to gain
valuable insight as to how a general FSAE car is put together and its basic functions. This also sped up the design process while allowing us to spend more time
on the build and acquiring shop skills. This was especially important because not
a single person on our team has any SAE experience.
We are excited to be able to finally attend MIS and enter a
car into the Michigan FSAE competition. Our membership,
sponsorship and experience have all grown this past season. It has been a long and difficult season with countless
hours put in but the GVSU Formula Racing Team is here

Dalhousie University
Dalhousie Formula SAE
Last season, Dalhousie University saw more than their fair share of highs and
lows. At FSAE Michigan, the team started strongly and was on track for a teambest result when a minor reliability issue resulted in a DNF during endurance.
Undeterred, the team worked more long nights preparing the car and drivers for
their hop across the pond to participate in FSUK for the second year running as
the sole North American entrants. The efforts of the team paid off and the long
hours and hard work of the whole team were realized as the team finished 20th
overall.
The 2015 UNC Charlotte Formula SAE car is the work of students using their
engineering knowledge from the classroom and applying it to real world problems.
What really happened was students skipping out on homework and dates with
their girlfriends to deal with broken FSAE parts, listening to dubstep, dealing with
Lukes flatulence and extremely odd love of cats.
For the 2015 season, Dalhousie University has continued their efforts to create a
consistent and reliable car. The drivers extremely low seating position allows for
a very low and narrow car, and returns a center of mass of less than 300 mm.
Careful design of the frame and ergonomics ensured that driver comfort, egress,
and visibility have remained unaffected.
We would like to thank all of our sponsors, and all those involved in planning,
organizing, and running Formula SAE events. We are grateful for your dedication
to providing students such an incredible academic experience.

The 2015 University of Saint Thomas Racing Team has re-designed its 2013
vehicle to utilize a smaller and lower structure. While re-using a lot of the major
components, the main goal of this year was to increase ground clearance, maintain a low center of gravity, and decrease machining time across all designs. The
newest advancement in our Honda Engine Package is the introduction of a new
ECU, Microsquirt V3 by DIY AutoTune which is all tightly packed into the new 4130
Chromoly space frame. The fully adjustable double unequal non-parallel A-Arms
allow for every paved track condition. All design work has been reviewed and
documented for future generations of our program.
We have brought a car with many new design changes from last year. This car
features a new lighter frame along with several other lighter parts. During design
we were shooting to create good feel for the driver, we wanted he or she to be as
comfortable and capable in the car as possible.

Warrior Racing
This year marks Warrior Racings 13th year of competition. From the heart of
Detroit, we present to you Road Warrior 9, (a.k.a Lily). Developed from clear goals
set at the beginning of the design phase, detailed workmanship through the
manufacturing phase, and the most testing any of our vehicles have experienced;
RW9 will be our best yet.
We would like to thank our sponsors for their generosity. Their continued support
has paved the road for one of the most successful years for the team. Our team
is lead by 10 veterans, four of whom will be leaving the program this year, taking
with them over 20 years of engineering and business experience.

Penn State Racings top priority for the 2015 campaign was to identify the
strengths and vulnerabilities of previous vehicle designs. To do so, the team
conducted extensive, regimented testing of the 2014 vehicle over the summer
and fall 2014. This testing was crucial for allocating resources and manpower
during the design of the 2015 vehicle. Some of the key areas identified as needing improvement were air intake and oil pan design, rear anti-roll bars (ARB), the
aerodynamic package, and overall component integration. The insight obtained
throughout the testing process extended beyond data collection - the team
worked hard to refine data acquisition protocols and streamline overall track testing procedures for the 2015 vehicle.

University of Guelph
Gryphon Racing
For the 2015 season the University of Guelph FSAE team has focused on refining
our 2014 car platform. Key areas of team improvement include chassis rigidity,
engine tuning and team development. By building on previous designs, weve
been able to focus on refining rather than reinventing. Weve also revamped our
management structure and ideology to help our team grow and prosper long
term, While maintaining a vision for a simple, reliable and cost effective racecar.
This year, the team focused on building the foundation of the vehicles design
because it is the teams first year in the Formula SAE competition. To ensure that
a vehicle is designed, built, tested, and taken to competition successfully, the
team established three main goals for the design of the vehicle: safe, simple,
and reliable. The design considerations, modeling, and testing lead to the successful launch of the vehicle, and the first year ERAU Formula SAE team. The
team worked to improve the packaging of the vehicle by going with a steel-tube
chassis, instead of a monocoque, which allows for quick access to all systems,
cost savings, and sufficient space to service and maintain the vehicle. To further
simplify packaging and refine the wiring in the vehicle, a Controller Area Network
(CAN) system was added, allowing communication between the front and rear of
the vehicle with only two wires. The design maintained the common objective to
build a reliable vehicle by taking advantage of in-house manufacturing for easily
replaceable parts. The result of the design efforts of undergraduate and graduate
students work is Embry-Riddles first Formula SAE vehicle.

RT05 is the third race car built by PWR Racing Team. The main design goals for
this construction were reliability and simplicity, with additional goal being weight
reduction. It is a base car which will be developed step by step in the future
projects.
To meet the goals it has been decided to use a steel space frame for the chassis
of the car and power it with a Honda CBR 600RR engine. The car runs on 13"
aluminum alloy wheels. The suspension geometry uses SLA type double wishbones, which allowed us to achieve proper roll and camber control. For suspension components mainly aluminum and steel were used. Body, seat, floor and air
duct have been made of CFRP using the infusion method.
The use of known technologies, such as welding and milling, for responsible
load-bearing elements made the car very reliable and durable. By applying smart
design and weight optimization we managed to keep the dry weight of the car to
205kg. Proper engine tuning and utilization of quick shifting and launch control
systems allowed us to achieve acceleration 0-100km/h of just 3,6 seconds.

Northwestern University
Northwestern Formula Racing
Northwestern Formula Racing set out to make major redesigns during the 2015
season. We started from the basics and entirely revamped our suspension
geometry based on tire data analysis and principles of vehicle dynamics. We also
upgraded to the two-cylinder Honda CBR500R, which gives us more power out
of a light engine. Our car features updated electronics that are focused on data
acquisition and increased reliability. A carbon fiber steering wheel with integrated
electronics and an LED screen allows the driver total control and feedback during
driving. We have focused on the implementation of structural carbon fiber components, which can be found in our floors and drop links.
The team continues to build upon the strong foundation set in 2013 and pursue
the spirit of SAE. We would like to extend a special thank you to our friends,
families, advisors, sponsors, Florida Tech, and Nirvana Travel & Tourism for

This years experience of building a Formula SAE car at Washington State University has been a beneficial learning experience for all students involved. Through
early recruiting and promotion of our club we have built up a large student
involvement. In future years the younger students will be the leaders of our team,
and as such it has been essential to develop the skills and knowledge of younger
students. By establishing clear design goals at the start of the school year we
have been able to design and build a car that we are proud of.
Due to lack of funding we limited ourselves to a simple and cost effective vehicle.
Our primary achievement for this year was producing a vehicle that we could
learn from, thus developing a knowledge base for future years. By documenting the reasoning behind every design decision we are developing a process for
building a Formula SAE car, not just building a car. We hope that having a clear
process for developing a car our club will flourish for years to come. Being able
to design a vehicle and turn our ideas into reality has given us an incredible real
world experience in the engineering field.

University of Hartford
Hartford Racing
The University of Hartford uses a Yahmaha YFZ 450-R ATV engine. It is 449cc
engine with a bore and stroke of 95mm x 63.4mm. The intake manifold features
two intake runners joined at the engine intake port, allowing for optimum fuel injector. The engine management system chosen for the 2015 car is a Performance
Electronics ECU 3. For the exhaust, a Supertrap muffler was selected for its ability
to decrease sound pressure level substantially by adding baffles and a resonator
was designed to induce phase cancelation at the problematic frequencies. For
suspension on the vehicle, the car runs push-rod actuated bell cranks in both the
front and the rear. The front utilizes unequal a-arms, with the pushrod mounted on
a gusset on the lower arm. The rear suspension also utilizes pushrods, though is a
trailing-arm type suspension. This years design also consists of a step-up chassis, in which the bottom of the chassis is raised relative from the front roll hoop to
the main roll hoop. This creates pickup points for the suspension at the nodes of
the chassis, ensuring that the suspension loads are delivered to the strongest part
of the chassis.

design ideas seem contradictory the team always but reliability first; meaning
that if one part was a bit heaver but had much greater reliability, the team would
sacrifice the weight difference. That being said the 2015 is nearly 20 lbs. lighter
than its predecessor. The teams primary goal is to successfully complete all

designs. A light weight, fuel efficient vehicle platform incorporating a carbon fiber
half-monocoque chassis and single-cylinder engine was selected. Launch control
and auto shifting systems have been implemented to aid an amateur driver. A
complete aerodynamic package was designed to increase the tractive limits of
the Hoosier LC0 tires on 10" wheels. The car is powered by a Yamaha WR450F
engine controlled by a MoTeC M400 engine management system. An adjustable
limited-slip differential allows the torque bias ratio to be tuned for acceleration

the predominantly 2nd and 3rd year engineering students that now comprise the
team.
University of Maryland
Terps Racing
The University of Maryland Terps Racing Formula SAE teams 2015 vehicle, TR15,
was designed with emphasis on reliability, simplicity, performance, and safety.
These primary goals were achieved with a four-cylinder engine, aerodynamic
effects that included front and rear wings with an undertray, and a steel space
frame. Design choices for the frame structure, front suspension, steering, and
seating were largely dictated by the layout of the wings and undertray diffusers.
Track width and wheelbase were determined using the lap simulations and CFD
modeling. Lastly, horsepower, weight, and fuel economy tradeoffs were analyzed
using the lap simulations to further evaluate design decisions.
We have developed our first aero package for the 2015 Michigan competition.
This aero-package is one of the key design changes to our 2nd year car. Technical
improvements were made such as the redesigned Torsen T1 differential, a fresh
CBR600f4i and redevelopment of the engine tune. Areas of concern were used as
learning platforms to address and improve the drivability and reliability. While all
major changes were developed to increase the overall performance of the car, the
primary concern was to familiarize of our new members with their new systems.
We would like to thank our Sponsors, friends and family for their unwavering
support!
