Board Meetings
Plaese note that board meetings will now be held on the third and not the first Monday of each month. Next
meeting is scheduled for Monday 17 October.
Reminders
A reminder to parents of year 7 and 8 students that staff supervise a Cambridge Study Hour from 3:00
to 4:00pm each Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. This is an opportunity for students to consolidate their
learning, complete homework in a quiet space, and perhaps get some extra assistance in areas of difficulty.
Children need to be registered for this class and so, if you have not already done this, and would like your
child to attend, please contact Mrs Donaldson or the school office.
If we hold medication for your child at school it might be a good time to check that what we have is still
appropriate and within expiry dates. If your child has a Ventolin puffer &/or spacer at school it must be
held at the office / sick bay even if just for the day, so that the office staff can monitor medication.
If you opted for quarterly payment of school contributions please forward your contribution to the office
at your earliest convenience.
.. Please return any remaining international Schools examination papers to school as soon as possible so that
we can put these in safe storage until next year.
Cambridge Programme
We will shortly be reviewing our Cambridge Programme and planning our next step. This programme has
produced some stunning outcomes and we are very excited as we prepare for our second Cambridge year.
Parents will be invited to a meeting early next term to reflect, seek your input and share our next steps.
Art Scholarship
Early next term we will be calling for expressions of interest in our 2016 Art
Scholarships. This is an opportunity to present a portfolio of artwork for judging, with
the potential to win a school cup and a small prize. Teachers have been given background
material, and so please flick them (or Kevin) an email if you would like to take a closer
look. This same material is also available from the school office.

Northland Cross Country 15 September

Parents of children who finished in the top 15 in their age group at Barge Park this week will have received
information and consents. Jenny Wiegersma will support our team on the day. Please support her as best
you can and remember to be there for the brief at 10:00am. Please note racing times are a guide only.
Shoes must be worn and Matarau T Shirt etc please. There is no postponement date and so will most likely
go ahead regardless.
Home Gardens
This week Mrs Burgin ran a workshop for Home garden students who wanted to make their own seed tape.
Thank you to Rebecca Agnew for her support with this. Any questions about Home Gardens to Mrs Burgin
please.
Judging of gardens will be held on Saturday 3rd December 2016. Much more to follow.
School Fundraising Kings Seeds

Kings Seeds have a great reputation of a high seed germination rate & healthy plants. The
school will get a commission from all seeds sold. An order form went home this week.
Simply select the seeds you want to grow, complete your name & contact details, and
return the order form with your payment to the school office by next Thursday 15
September 2016.
Your seed order will be delivered in time to plant during the holidays. Thanks in
advance for supporting the school.

Calf Club Day Thursday 20 October 2016

If you havent already, you need to start thinking now if your child/ren want to rear
calves, lambs or goats. The animal must be born after 1st July 2016. Calves are
judged on rearing and leading. Lambs are judged on rearing, leading & calling. Goats
are judged on rearing, leading & calling.
You can also bring a pet which can include rabbits, guinea pigs, fish, chicken etc. Note that NO DOGS or
PUPPIES are permitted and the animal will need to be in a cage for the duration of the day.
Please do not bring pregnant animals or new-borns on the day as this could put them
under stress that would not be good for their health. Also please make sure you bring
along food and water for your animals as it can be a long day for them especially if it is
sunny and hot.
More information will be sent home closer to the end of the term.
Matarau Loan T-Shirts
It is a condition of borrowing the loan t-shirts that they are for short term loan and are returned clean
(washed & folded) as soon as possible. This ensures these shirts are available for other children who need
them for the next event. Notes were sent home today to children who have borrowed shirts in the past year
and not returned them. Please return the shirts asap, alternatively, you may choose to purchase the shirt at
a reduced cost of $10. New quick dry green polo shirts are also for sale in the office at a cost of $30.
Finally
It is a real buzz to hear great news about former students. Some of you will remember Scott Gregory who
won our athletics cups year after year, and received our Senior Sports Boy Award. This week we heard news
that Scott had been selected for the NZ Secondary School Rugby Squad. This is a huge achievement and
puts Scott right in front of scouts for some of the top teams. We are proud of Scott and of each of our
students who go on to achieve. Please let us know what our former students are doing, we would love to hear.

Community Notices
Operation Christmas Child
From next week, each classroom will have two shoeboxes
which we hope to get filled with your help. The boxes will be sent
to children in need (as a result of poverty, war, famine, natural disaster or
disease). Although Operation Christmas Child is run by a Christian organization, the boxes
are distributed without regard to race, creed, gender, religion or ethnicity of the children.
Children who receive a box are filled with joy, knowing someone loves them. It gives them hope in
desperate situations.
Suitable items to send to school to include in the box are: T-shirt, cap, small soft toy, craft
items, things for school (eg a pen, pencil, exercise book), small toys (eg tennis ball, car, skipping
rope), soap, facecloth, toothbrush. But NO gambling related items, food, breakable items or
things that leak or melt.
All items need to be new. HOWEVER, if you have good 2nd hand items, they can be used to help
families in NZ who have a family member in prison! The boxes will be collected at the end of the
First school week after the school holidays (14 October).
For more information go to operationchristmas.org.nz. Thank you so much for your support Even
the smallest contributions will make a difference.

Recycling Old Mobile Phones

It would be great if you could rummage around in your drawers and toy boxes and bring
into School any unwanted mobile phones you may have.
Phones collected help our School gain valuable rewards and also the environment benefits
by keeping our landfills free of mobile phones and their array of hazardous toxic
substances. Please drop any unwanted mobile phones you may have in the collection box
in the Office at School.
