AUTHOR: Gerry Lee Gorit

SOURCE OF THE EVENT: The Philippine Star, August 8, 2016

SUMMARY:

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines This citys Mayor Oscar Moreno has been granted a
60-day reprieve by the Court of Appeals, which prevented the Office of the Ombudsman
from suspending him and two other officials.
The suspension order against Moreno stemmed from a complaint filed by Barangay
Puntod chairman Marvin Beja, who alleged that the mayor ordered the release of the
budget for the citys aspiring boxers without the approval of the city council.
Records showed the city government leased a private property for P35,000 a month to
house the boxers from August to December 2013.
Beja alleged the funds were released without the approval of the city council.
Moreno said the payment of the rental was done in compliance with the law.
CA Justices Edgardo Camello, Oscar Badelles and Ronaldo Martin issued a temporary
restraining order (TRO) in favor of the accused city officials.
On Thursday, reports began circulating that the Department of the Interior and Local
Government would serve the suspension order against the officials.
Bejas complaint was the second filed against Moreno.Recently, former village chief
William Guialani filed a case against Moreno in connection with a tax settlement he
entered into with Ajinomoto Philippines.
Guialani said Moreno and city treasurer Glenn Baez did not ask the permission of the
city council for the settlement deal. The mayor also managed to secure from the court a
TRO, which remains in effect, in connection with the tax settlement case.

REACTION
Im not saying that all politicians are corrupt but after reading the news on the newspaper, it
looks like that they are abusing their political power for their own interest. After reading all the
story, I feel sadden because the process of the case here in the Philippines take so long and
sometimes it is just dismissed by the supreme , the worst is the case may be forgotten. The
mayor also were able to get temporary restraining order (TRO) from the court, by this the mayor
can stop Barangay Puntod chairman Marvin Beja and former village chief William Guialani

to continue filing additional case against the mayor, the TRO will also stop the two
compliant from exposing more evidence against the mayor
I don't know when will this political corruption thing will be vanished in our country since a lot of
Filipino todays were already practicing this kind of way of living, not only that it keeps growing
larger and larger. In addition, I would like to address this to all Filipino there will be no corruptions
here in our country if we just simply follow the rules and do what is right and control ourselves
being greedy in money.
